Don't pay for that. My understanding is that there are already pretty good transfers, already burned to DVD, available throughout the bootleg trading scene. I'm thinking of acquiring a copy myself, actually.

Currently looking for the following preservations: V8 A Final Attempt by Arnie.D, Pre-ANH Bootleg Telecine, Starkiller '77 bootleg, LD OT by Cowclops, LD OT by Dr. Gonzo, LD OT by Farsight, LD OT by ISOMIX, LD OT by Dark/Sega Take 1, TPM Theatrical by Adywan, OT - Deliberate Creative, OCPMovie's Classic Editions, Pan & Scan O-OT Project, LD OT by EditDroid, Lucasfilm Pwnage Editions, Negative1 CED Preservations, Starkiller CED Preservation, Rowman bonus discs, BLAK0004, BLAK0009, BLAK0010, BLAK0016, BLAK0017, BLAK0029, BLAK0040, BLAK0046, BLAK0047-0050. Also a good preservation of the 97 SEs.

Didn't say I was going to bid. Not at that price, and certainly without knowing for sure what's on it. ;)

I've yet to see any bootleg version that looks better that what I taped off MTV in the 90's. (Pan and scan, unfortunately.) The only time it was ever shown on tv, IIRC.

If a disc like this gets into private hands, maybe the video portions of Star Tours will pop up someday.

Where were you in '77?

I have a disc somewhere with a widescreen bootleg telecine of this, as well as a pan'n'scan transfer from a Japanese LD.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

There was a Japanese LD release?

I think so? Maybe it's from the US laserdisc. I remember subtitles, but then again, my brain might automatically assume that all LD caps have burned-in Asian subs.

Was this part of a compilation of MJ videos or something?

The laserdisc or my DVD? My answers would be "I don't know" and "no", respectively. The disc I have is just Captain EO.

I don't think Captain EO was ever officially released to any form of home video consumption. It had a hefty marketing campaign, but it was all spinoffs, adaptations, and tie-ins. The actual film was not released commercially to home video. So whatever your transfers are from, they're from bootlegged inside sources.

Which is what I thought. All the fullscreen versions are probably from the MTV broadcast. The letterbox version I've seen looks like a VHS dupe of a workprint. Some narration was missing from that one.

That's probably it, then. There's a rip of the disc I have on a torrent tracker that I'm on. Here's some screens from that rip:

Just took a quick look at the ebay page. He is not claiming that it is a retail laserdisc - he says it is one of the actual discs that was used to play the film at Disneyland. It is therefore possible that it is legitimate, though I don't have any idea if Disney actually used laserdiscs to play the films. I also noted that he has been on Ebay for a long, long time, and has 100% feedback, which does give him some credibility. How he managed to get an official copy of the laserdisc is anybody's guess though.

Holy crap! It went for $1055! I hope the winner was someone on this board.

And no, it wasn't me...

Yeah, wouldn't it be great if the winner was planning on transferring it to DVD here on the forum? That would be sweeet! (But probably not the case).

As well he should.  I've been thinking about trying to dig through my archives to find any good Michael stuff.

sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but considering those involved i'd imagine there's some interest in this film, and i for one would love to see a proper restoration/preservation done.

+1

Hi all, I was expecting this thread to have many posts. This IMDB page lists 3 Captain EO items.

  1. Captain EO (1986)
  2. Captain EO Promo & Pre-show
  3. The Making of 'Captain Eo' (1986)

I've seen #1 and #2 and probably #3. The link in the OP probably is referring to #2 and it's good to know that #2 is available on LD.

Is anyone working on these?

If YouTube is any example, we could really do with a professional "remastering" of this short film written by George Lucas. I've gone through many of the "full versions" and they're filtered through YouTube 3D effects, casually converted back to 2D, fuzzy ride videos, widescreen/full-frame, full-frame cropped to widescreen, etc.

Sources SEEM to be, primarily, a screener of the widescreen film, and a full-frame DVD?

Pity people haven't paid closer attention, for example this 70mm film was selling/sold on eBay back in 2011: http://www.ebay.com/itm/220837270580?orig_cvip=true

There's a little more info in this thread maybe: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Tours-Muppet-vision-3-D-Terminator-3-D-Back-to-the-Future-The-Ride-Captain-EO-etc/topic/3438/

Problem is anything M.J. related ends up with an over inflated asking price. Nobody here is going to drop $7000 on a print unless they win the lottery.

Disney is so lackadaisical about 3D on Blu Ray these days, (at least in the U.S.) I fear Eo is never going to see a home release.

It doesn't help that so many MJ fans are completely clueless when it comes to video stuff, they'd buy it and hoard it and never be able to use it.

Some of us would prefer to get this stuff in the hands of "experts" to share with all. Like, holy crap, how did we miss that 70mm print!?

Also curious as to how much is actually 70mm. According to IMDB it's a partial blow up (not sure of the source on that though)
