just a few other notes on the english reels, before

we jump over there:

====================================

-looks like they are in good shape, with a slight red

shift on them..

-not too many scratches on them yet...

- SURPRISE !!!!!!!!! this is an original crawl also,

no episode 4 anywhere to found, or 'a new hope' either.

so now we have 2 versions of the original.....

ok, i'll get back to posting some images..

I actually think that owning a 35mm print is illegal. Unless the laws have been changed here in the US, I think consumers are only allowed to own 8mm and 16mm prints. I remember hearing a story about how the actor Roddy McDowell had his home raided, and his collection of 35mm films confiscated. Aside from trailers, I think they're banned from eBay, as well.

EDIT: I've since learned that owning a 35mm print is not automatically illegal. It depends upon the circumstances.

Exactly, for instance, Quentin Tarantino is known to have a very large private 35mil print collection, and he speaks publically about it, so ownership is not exactly illegal.

I'm not sure, but within the EU it seems to be more of a problem for the seller and less of one for the buyer. For instance, if you sell a fake chinese iPhone you're doing something illegal, but if you buy it you're not, however, you may not resell it. hello, and sorry for the long wait about this..

just one quick update (more on a personal note)...

i haven't had any time to get back on this project with

updating the 'star wars' restoration board due to real

life getting in the way.. i was in the middle of a possible

move and a job change when these arrived, so i had

to get those straightened out..

the good news is, i will be staying at the same place,

with the same job... so now i don't have to worry about

packing/moving etc... so i'll be getting back to this project

shortly..

i'm still waiting on an update about the transfer.

the last news i heard was they were getting an upgrade

on the equipment to handle scanning a positive print..

of course i'll let you know more as soon as i hear anything..

thanks again for your patience and support.

well,

the GOOD news is there will be something good happening in a few months.

i'm back at my job, so i'll have the funding to help continue with the effort of the

transfer (needs to be updated to handle a positive press scanning)...

i've looked over both prints of 'star wars', and we'll try to get both done,

and see how they turn out... (empire will come later)..

the preservation site is down currently, but will be back up and running,

i'll let you know when..

this will be another great year for 'star wars'..

thanx for the interest..

So what's the skinny with this? Neg1 was a pain but it would be cool to see this happen....

His "preservation site" is down again and this time it looks like its for good. Negative1 was and is a cruel joke on this community. The man went and purchased probably the last remaining copies of the OOT on film...damaged the shit out of them by exposing them to dust and fingerprints all to get a few frames up on his scanner...for what? What a piece of work. Let's see if the guy has the guts to even show his face in here again...

I watched this for a while, before I was even a member. I dont know his site but his screens looked real good and it is disappointing (which is what most of the promising projects seem to do) to see this going nowhere

If anyone knows anything or has any updates, let us know

With all due respect, your average movie theater's projection booth back in the day was hardly a pristine, clean, dust free environment either! And I saw no evidence he damaged the prints.

The AFI, BFI, and the Library of Congress all hold archival prints.

Unless one of us has a 35mm telecine in their basement, (or $40k to spend on one) there isn't a whole lot anyone could do with such prints anyway...

Not posting here doesn't mean arrangements aren't being made. If you'll recall from earlier in this thread, all such discussions are happening in private now, for obvious reasons. :)

Right. That's why Negative1 let his domain expire. Good one.

Well i think its pretty safe to say we are never going to see this or even probably hear from -1 again.  I had kept quiet about what was happening with this project  because it looked like it was a dead thread. But i don't think it is fair for him to keep stringing people along any more

I was involved in this as one point and was in contact with -1 to see how the best way we could get this done. I was going to help out with the colour correction and restoration once the transfer was done. I had access to -1's site and was in regular contact with him with ideas about how to get this done. Then he announced some good news about the transfer and then disappeared. Well he had been in talks with a person who some may know was doing a star wars restoration, had a site all about this restoration, but was never going to share the project with anyone but a select few and even that would only ever have been a screening. I became concerned that if this person was to become involved and would be the one that has the reels for the 4k scanning that they may want to solely use this for their own project for which would never see the light of day. I was assured by -1 that this would not be the case as he had spoken with him about this already. Now personally i have many doubts that this person was ever involved as i was unable to have any contact with him and every bit of information was only coming from -1

Suddenly, and without any warning or contact from -1, my account over at his site was no longer accessible and he ignored any contact i tried to make about this project. If progress about the transfer had been made i was now out of the loop and my services were obviously no longer required. Now his website domain is dead

Now i see it as one of 4 things happened:

1 -  the transfer did go ahead on the understanding that it was to be kept within a select few and never will see the light of day

or

2 - -1 had blown so much smoke up peoples asses about how he was definitely going to get this done and bigged himself up so much when people challenged him about this that when he finally realised that he could not get a decent transfer done because nowhere that did digital scanning would touch it with a barge pole he didn't have the guts to come on here and admit he was wrong

or

3  -  he was stupid enough to take it to a professional movie transfer house, got reported to Lucasfilm and got slapped with a lawsuit and is now sharing a small prison cell with a 7ft hairy biker and is now his bitch

4 - New that this could never possibly have been done and was hoping that everyone here would send him loads of money to pay for the transfer and then just disappear leaving everyone high and dry

I actually think that its #2. I fully understand the reasons behind the person who was doing the star wars project not wanting to release it because of who he was and his professional ties, so i was very surprised when -1 said he was to become involved and that he was fine with it being released for everyone to enjoy. Was he ever really involved? I guess we will never know.

This guy clearly did not know what he was doing. he was also someone who would never admit when he was wrong. This is the guy who said that newsgroups are way too slow compared to torrents. even when he was proved wrong he still claimed that he knew what he was talking about because he'd been programming computers since the 80's (or something like that) and that we were al wrong and didn't know what we were talking about. then he made a torrent of my EP 4 Revisited DVD, but unpacked the ISO using winrar and caused a couple of the video files to become corrupt. He failed to take any responsibility for this and said that he got it direct from the usenet upload i made, therefore saying the corruption was on the original and my fault. Again, when it was clearly pointed out to him that it was his fault because everyone that got it from usenet and didn't unpack the ISO had no problems whatsoever with it, he still never claimed full responsibility and the torrent was just deleted. Luckily i was able to provide a fix for all the people who had spent days downloading the torrent.

I have ran across people like this all throughout my life, but this was one occasion i was preying i would be proved wrong. sadly another time waster getting peoples hopes up and failing to deliver anything

I think #2 as well. He got in way over his head, I think that's obvious to anyone who followed any of his conversations/threads. It's sad that he actually has those reels and nothing will ever come from them. Still, I'd love to be proven wrong!

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

Well F*** me. I was looking at his images nearly crapping my pants. I was so happy that we would finally get star wars in the highest possible quality. Now I feel f***ed. But atleast your edit of star wars makes me happy Ady. It is just ashame that I can't see Star Wars the way it was originally seen.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Very unfortunate.

Unfortunate isn't a strong enough word. I don't like to see people that have something  great for people like us and just quit. It is like a billionaire waving a wad of cash in your face as to say here take it and then change their mind and say no sorry you can't have it. It is so cruel. I guess it is to be expected. I am never going to look at a project with an optimistic attitude again. No offense to people who actually take pride in their work. If I was to make a fan edit/or preservation I would atleast let people know if I was stopped in my tracks. I am going to look at his film scans with the mindset that it won't happen. I am used to dissapointment when it comes to star wars. I guess that is why this site was made, Too many dissapointed Star Wars fans LOL

We should hire some bounty hunters to track down negative1 and bring us the negatives!

I have a feeling he did something really stupid like spill pop on the negatives and doesn't have the balls to come on here and say it.
