Does anybody have original records of Thriller? What about his music videos? What format were those in back then?

Television. Back then the music channels actually played music videos. You'd turn on MTV and it would be video after video (there was some other programming too, but lots of videos).

Today, I am not even sure why music videos are still made. Seriously? Where are they aired so that they can bring back profit? I wouldn't even know where to go to see a video today if it wasn't for youtube.

They are made for sites like Youtube. They get money back in advertising.

Yeah, but only for the last couple of years. Remember back when music videos were constantly being removed from youtube and google video because they were in violation of copyrights? There was still a long gap between the time "music" channels stopped actually showing music videos and the time youtube filled that gap in glorious pixelated blurriness

I think youtube has improved recently, even in standard quality I think the videos look pretty good. So were music videos like Thriller recorded in 35mm and then broadcast in analog on cable networks back then and that was the only way of seeing them? Didn't they used to attach music videos to CDS for awhile? Apparently they had video in CD quality, since they were short they could fit on a cd, I never bought CDs much so I don't know. What about music videos sold on DVD? I have never seen a music video sold on DVD.

That stuff didn't start happening till the mid-90s - before tehn you bought your music on a vinyl or CD and you watched videos on TV.  There was no internet, no 'enhanced' CDs with videos on the disc etc, none of that.

So, what's gonna happen to all those Beatles recordings Jacko owned the rights to?

Dude! You left our the part about the wonderful and glorious audio cassette! How could you leave out audio cassette?

Another popular way of distributing music videos back in the nineties were at the ends of movies on home video. If one of the songs on the soundtrack was a popular single with a music video, the music video would often end up tacked on after the credits on VHS of the movie. This was the genesis of the special features which are now standard with DVD and BD.

Michael Jackson has filmed everything on 16mm or 35mm sense the mid seventies. From every concert he has performed sense the destiny tour to all his music videos. Most are 1.33 but his Movie Moonwalker is 16:9, however it has never been released like that. Oh and he has tons of music video DVD's. I own a few. The quality on History on Film Vol. 2 is pretty darn good. Especially the Motown Billie Jean Performance.

I think the Beatles catalog went into the trust fund that his children got. Remeber he owned more than the beatles, he owned 50% of every modern Sony artist. Usher, Beyonce, Justin, etc. He owned it all.

True, true - my bad!  Although, let's be honest, cassettes sucked.  The fact that you could record on them was their only cool point - but not being able to skip tracks, and the fact that they almost always broke... rubbish!

They still didn't suck as bad as 8 Tracks. :P

The novelty of both the cassette and the 8 track was their potential for portability. And the whole mix tape thing and ability to record with cassettes was a plus. But beyond that, they didn't have much of a future. Just a place holder until the next best thing came along, and it did.

R.I.P. Cassette tape. It was fun while it lasted, but not many of us were sorry to see you go.

Back to topic. Notice how during the first week after this man's death, the creepy makeup wearing white guy was nowhere to be found? Every where you looked was the boyish faced, curly haired, chocolate skinned, helium voiced young man so many women seemed to swoon over for so many years. One week later, that face had disappeared, and every magazine cover is plastered with the pasty white face, and bearing captions such as "Drug Addict?" "What will become of his children?" "Micheal's Horrible Secrets Revealed!" etc. Gotta love the media.

Sorry to dig up an old thread and also quote a banned member, but I just couldn't help myself.

I laughed for about 10 minutes at Janskeet's question.  Once I stopped, I realized the joke was on me - I now feel 1,000 years old.

You must have been born in the 70's, Frink. Because that was 1000 years ago. I'm 35, which is like 60 in single guy years these days.

A spinster with a bunch of dogs?

When I was a kid, I thought of all dogs as male and cats as female.

Well, it is worth noting that the greatest space epic next to Star Wars is returning to Disneyland.

I wonder if it'll be like it was or a horror ride for the kiddos. I mean, having been a 13 year old boy once, it would terrify me to see Michael Jackson reaching out to me. I'd think he was trying to grab my dinky.

I'd be more worried about my Frinky.
