I don't know where you're looking but the UK DVD boxset is only £33 ( = $53), the bluray set is £69 ( = $111) those are the prices on Amazon.co.uk, I don't know what the shipping rates are but they can't be that high.

on a side note this is why I have not yet moved over to Blu-ray, to me it just isn't worth twice the price.

DarenDoc says this in the article:

One point on the commentary of TMP that I’d like to clarify… when we made the recording, we were watching the transfer of the film that Robert Wise supervised the color timing for… and you can hear me commenting on that, and the fact that the two shots in the v’ger interior where we corrected the deflector dish color were in the copy we were watching… are not in fact in the new HD transfer.  Overall, I’m sorry to see that the timing supervised by Mr. Wise and approved by cinematographer Richard Kline isn’t on this release… the new transfer seems shifted a bit too much toward the cyan in most scenes… but the contrast and black density seems proper now, now that NTSC vagueries aren’t a consideration.

And clarified in the comments after I asked him what version he was watching:

We were watching a video of the original theatrical edition. When we color corrected the theatrical version with Mr. Wise, it was in HD… that was then down converted and used as the source material to do the Director’s Edition. This version of the theatrical cut was what we were watching when we did the commentary. We watched a standard def video when doing the commentary.

So they made an HD color-corrected version of the theatrical cut which has apparently never been seen!  The released Blu Ray is more original, but still a bit more cyan.

I think the SLV is fine having started with the DE since it was color corrected and looks good from that end.  Or are you going to go through and break the deflector dish color in Vger? ;-)

Still looking for pics from ST TMP?

I gots tons.

NICE!

If I remember correctly, some of these are the same shots used for the gum cards.

"By the time we got to Woodstock..."

An attack of intestinal cramps?  The Enterprise's new food replicators must still need a bit of adjusting.

No Kirk in shuttle

The refit must not yet be complete. (Port side stern of the ship is missing)

Enterprise encounters a huge SPACE BRAIN! I always wondered if shots like these are of the rejected original special effects, or had they just been quickly made for promo use.

"I have a bad feeling about this."

You know because he looks like Ewan McGregor, and he's all on a transporter and... oh never mind.

I was going to ask if you're using the original untouched shot of the Enterprise when she's leaving the spacedock? You know? Where you can see the black arm that comes out from underneath the ship and covers the stars as it passes in front of them.

They fixed/erased it for the Director's Edition.

That's what you see in this pic

The plan was to use all the original effects without any of the fixes done in the Director's cut.

The bottom shot must be an early FX/lighting test pic.  The hull doesn't have NCC-1701 on it.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

Am I seeing things, or is there a makeup line on Nimoy's nose?

In an alternate timeline, this fellow replaced Spock. ;)

The transporter malfunction scene seriously creeped me out thirty years ago, and I still skip past it to this day. But sans FX, it looks like they are disco dancing! ;)

A fellow fan on this forum has donated some very rare promotional footage.  We are trying to see if we can restore it.

I'll keep you all updated.

I'm not sure what I think about it at this point, so I figured I'd post it and get reactions from you guys.  But this is what I have so far, cover-wise.

Hello, I am not new here, but have not been here in a very long time. It seems that I have very old e-mail address on file. Anyways... was wondering how this cover is coming along, and if there is a downloadable version out there.

(hope I can ask that... I don't remember all the rules here)

Also, this is open to anyone... Is any one going to be creating a combined set with the 2-Disc DVD release and the Blu-ray release? Like a standard size 3 disc DVD case that holds the 2 DVDs and 1 Blu-ray disc. Really, I am looking for something that looks like the bottom picture, but created for the standard three disc case. Just wondering.

I recommend not using an image from the original series Enterprise and not using the Star Trek III stand-off image between the Enterprise and the Klingon Bird of Prey - keep on Motion Picture images, please.

That's an old image, and those were placeholders - it's fucking hard to find TMP pictures online.  But thanks to several members of this thread, I've got plenty of TMP images.

When I get back from work later, I'll post an updated version of the cover.

Other than the placeholder images, I think it's great - good copy, too.

My 2 cents.

Use only promotional shots from the film, but not of anything that doesn't appear in this edit. For example, don't use a still where Spock wears the yellow uniform because he doesn't in the film.

Don't use screen caps. Why bother if it can be seen within the film?

Present a different photo for each facet. Don't repeat any of the cover stills if, lets say, you're making an insert.

Don't use any solo stills of any crew member unless it's either all of them or they are pictured w/ either kirk or Spock.

Don't use any still on the spine. Keep it the title and studio logo.

Here's what I would suggest for the back cover photos

here you have one of Kirk and Spock but different enough (since Spock is not looking like his usual Starfleet self) to suggest seperate circumstances.

An action scene to suggest there actually is some in this movie.

And, of course, the star of the film, the Enterprise in a not so typical space shot. Also since this is a sci-fi film it gives you an fx scene.

More 2 cents.

Leave the back cover background of Spock searching for VGer.

Have the stills run up and down where the text is. Cut it down to 3 pics.

Use Kirk, Klingon bridge and the Enterprise. No need for a Spock pic since he has the entire back cover.

Move the description text to above where the special features bar is and the pictures are now.

I would also take out all the stuff in the copy about it being a fan cut to make it look like an "official" DVD release.

No need to mention all the special features since they are listed in the box below it. Trim it to the basics.

"The U.S.S. Enterprise soars once more in the Special Longer Version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Created in 1983 for home video and television airings, this version runs 14 minutes longer than the original theatrical presentation. Now, for the first time ever, this extended cut is presented in a restored widescreen format. Whether you're an old fan, or experiencing Star Trek for the first time, this is a fascinating alternative look at The Motion Picture."

When it's re-released.  The first release had technical problems and some Director's Edition effects that didn't belong.  I don't recall if FF has announced when it will be back out or not.

I think he was also going to make it anamorphic.

I know, I just threw that under the blanket term "technical problems."

Damn, I keep forgetting to get to work on that cover ...

This project is still on the way.  Just a little more time needed to clean some extras up a bit.
