Does anybody know about this fan edit? I’ve only seen references to it. I can’t find any information on it, and I can’t find anybody that has it, or anywhere that it’s downloadable.

Currently looking for the following preservations: V8 A Final Attempt by Arnie.D, Pre-ANH Bootleg Telecine, Starkiller '77 bootleg, LD OT by Cowclops, LD OT by Dr. Gonzo, LD OT by Farsight, LD OT by ISOMIX, LD OT by Dark/Sega Take 1, TPM Theatrical by Adywan, OT - Deliberate Creative, OCPMovie's Classic Editions, Pan & Scan O-OT Project, LD OT by EditDroid, Lucasfilm Pwnage Editions, Negative1 CED Preservations, Starkiller CED Preservation, Rowman bonus discs, BLAK0004, BLAK0009, BLAK0010, BLAK0016, BLAK0017, BLAK0029, BLAK0040, BLAK0046, BLAK0047-0050. It was pretty bad IIRC - in fact I believe the original editer retracted it for multiple reasons including it not being DVD quality video and the black and white having more of a green tinge to it...

I believe I had it for a while when it first was released but it wasn't anything too special - we all made comments on how to improve on it and I don't know if the editer ever did anything beyond that point\

Sorry I can't be of any more help man :(

Well in that case I probably don't need to see it. Maybe I'll do it myself someday. Time to go look for some good tutorials on fan editing.

I will admit it was a pretty good idea, but it suffered because of those problems. I'd love to see another fan edit done of it but better done

I was looking at ADM's guide, and it's really exhaustive and informative, but I can't help feeling like it's over my head. I think I'm gonna have to just sit down and devote like a week to just figuring the stuff out.

yeah, i have this edit.  It has a ton of problems, and I cant watch it because of them.  The video is greenish, and a really bad cheap "film effect" was applied to the movie.  While it was a good idea, I wouldnt waste your time trying to get this DVD.  A new edit on this concept would be cool.  I have been thinking about doing it, but it would be a long time until I ever have time to get to it.

I'm not thinking of anything too complex. It would be my first edit, if I did it, so I'd want to keep it simple, at least for the first time around. There's a couple of scenes I'd want to cut, a song I'd replace, and I'd want to make it all black-and-white. Does that sound like something a first-time editor could do?

Easily you could do that - when I had it for a while, I made some improvements just by using a simple B/W filter in Sony Vegas (my preferred video/audio editor) and adjusting the contrast to make it look more like the first movie. His suffered from what I call the soft greyscale effect where everything just looks grey and unappealing. Add to that it had a green tint and that cheap old movie filter (which I was going to mention but forgot to write - thanks ThrowgnCpr!) and it was just unappealing to watch.

If you want to start by just editing an AVI or MPEG file (just to get your chopping skills down) I'd suggest that, especially since ripping the files as a workable DVD file and editing those is a bit slower work and rendering a new AVI or MPEG file is much quicker / easier. Plus, it would be easier to download so we can tell you what you need to work on. But that's just me, I don't know if ADM and others would appreciate a lower res version, but I'd have no real prob with that from a first time editer, especially if doing it that way would allow you practice and flexibility. Plus, this is hard work sometimes, who wants to learn all those skills if you find out that this isn't something you like doing?!

I do this for fun occasionally - I still have a Star Wars Holiday Special Edit that needs to be rendered, and it's been done (mostly) for over a year, so you can see the level of commitment I have to this kind of work lol!

If you do decide to do this, I'll help out anyway I can in form of suggestion of what I'd cut and how I'd do it (cuz I do have some ideas too)

@ ThrowgnCpr - I thought he only released an AVI or MPEG of that, not a full DVD, or am I mistaken?

It's gonna take me awhile regardless, since I'm super-busy with a bunch of different projects at the moment. But I definitely want to do this. I watched Clerks II again recently and liked it a lot more than the first time, but I still want to see it in a more spare, Clerks I style.

A full DVD was released.  I think he sent it directly to me (and I put it up on RS), but really its not worth bothering with.  It looks so bad, that you may as well just look at the AVI.

And yes,  think this is definitely an edit that a first time editor can work on.  It wouldnt take a ton of cuts, and the filters are pretty easy in Vegas, or a comparable editing program.  Some extra things might be nice, like title cards to match Clerks 1 style, and possibly some music work.  But all in all, I dont think it would be a difficult edit.

Oh yes, title cards. Forgot to mention that. I also would like to do that. As far as music, the only changes I can think of off the bat would be replacing the opening music with something more akin to the Love Among Freaks song from the first film (or even just using the Love Among Freaks song).

Originally I wanted to cut the rooftop dancing scene, but I think it has to stay because it introduces the pregnancy subplot. Maybe I can cut out everybody else's dancing, resync the song, and have it be a shorter, Dante-and-Becky-only scene.

Also, are there any deleted scenes to consider? I'm still waiting for my Widescreen SE DVD to come in the mail.

There are some deleted / extended scenes, but nothing that I think would alter it too much.

If you're trying to emulate the original Clerks, then definitely take into consideration cutting it how Kevin would have in 1994 and budget constraints, like the opening scene with the fire, definitely not in the original film's 27,000 dollar budget. Maybe you can have it start with them working at mooby's and use the drive by of the quick stop to on the drive to mooby's to explain that, or rather let the dialogue do the work for you. Back then Kevin relied HEAVILY on dialogue to move the story and it's the same here but he does provide the visuals most times in this one... so cutting out that kinda stuff would help.

Unfortunately, if doing it in that line of thinking, you might even have to cut out alot of wide exterior shots, the donkey show and such...

Also, if wanting to add something in to make it like Clerks, why not add in the Flying Car short film somewhere in there? maybe on the way to work? idk. maybe it's not even possible (diff model car, clothes, etc)

Just some ideas.

I would be interested in this,I actually started to edit this myself, started making up title cards and already had the movie converted to B&W,but I did not want to degrade it at all(I personally do not like making it look that way)so it was a nice crisp B&W LOL,but I have since moved on and all my previous files got lost\deleted.

Good luck

Yeah, there's gonna have to be some compromises in the sense that there are just way too many latter-day-Kevin shots in the film to really make it look like the first one. In the first one, there was no angling, everything was a straight-ahead shot at the subject, it was all very basic. The most complex camera work in the whole flick was the Big Choice Video scene, unless I'm forgetting something. So that's a compromise that has to happen. The "We totally do" bit, for example, one of the funniest Jay and Bob moments ever, doesn't look like a Clerks I shot.

I'm gonna go scene by scene and see what can stay and what absolutely must go. I think you're right about the fire scene, but I don't know how to replace it. I was thinking about that drive to Mooby's, but that's one of the things I want to cut. I don't like it. It's very un-Clerks. I wish Kevin would have filmed the Where's The Beef? stuff instead of making it a comic book. That drive in the car would have helped tremendously with cutting the fire scene. Still, the fire scene really does need to go, at least the part with the fire trucks.

I don't think the donkey show has to go. For one thing, I don't think it CAN go. Without that scene, the movie has no resolution. That's where Dante's relationship with Emma ends, his relationship with Becky begins, and everybody ends up in jail. The entire ending of the film is set up right there. But I don't think it's too much of a problem. It is a pretty glitzy shot, but hopefully it'll be the glitziest one in the entire re-cut.

I like your idea about adding in The Flying Car. I might even look at the Jay & Bob MTV shorts.

I'm gonna watch the film again and notate what I want to cut and change. I'll post that here, and then I'll start asking for suggestions. In the meantime, feel free to suggest away.

Darn. Do you have any idea what some of your title cards were, just so I could have a starting point for making mine?

On a related note, does anybody know whatever happened to the ViewAskewUniverse Rarities project? I keep trying to contact the guy via the email address listed on fanedit.com, but I get no response.

flip thru the dictionary and close your eyes and point to random words - then choose the best ones. That's what Kev did for Clerks I

rarities project? I remember something like that a while ago. I was doing a Trainwreck preservation that is just taking up space on my HDD now

I've never believed that Kevin actually did it that way for Clerks I. The words match up far too well. Denouement, Catharsis, and Vilification come immediately to mind.

Is that Trainwreck preservation completed? I know he was looking for somebody that had them all.

Yep that's the way he did the title cards THO I'm sure he chose more than just those few at random. I'm sure there were many more that didn't make the cut. But honestly, sometimes luck works that way, coincidences are awesome!

Trainwrecks... Well I've got them all minus one that was a youtube exclusive amd it will take up 2 DL dvds or 4 single layer

Why not the Youtube exclusive? Is it not up anymore? Also, is there a way I can score those discs from you? Perhaps via fanedit.info download?

I'd rather torrent the original files - it would be so much quicker cuz the files are smaller and you could do what you please with them. Once I render them as DVD files then you're limited with what you can do with them.

The YouTube exclusive was pulled for some reason.

Now that I've got dvd architect tho I may try and do this again - PM me and we'll work something out
