Well, judging by the scene when the Dean gets Indy out of his class, I'd say that once his students got wind of it, the news spread all across the university, and then beyond that as well...

Putting it in the college paper is actually exactly what I was thinking. Both he and his situation would be well known by the student body, so it would make perfect sense for an announcement to be made in that context. Even the front page would make sense. But in a city paper, probably not.
