Agree with the above (perhaps "LOCAL HERO TO WED" would be more like an actual headline). It acts as a nice segue into the next scene, and is snappy enough to read in the brief shot.

BTW, I see Frank Marshall has just confirmed Indy 5 is at the development stage.

Hopefully there will be less fan-editing to do on this one. ;)

HHHMMMM!!!!! according to George Lucas he is gonna pass sean connery's torch to harisson ford for this one. So Indy will call mutt junior whilst still being badass. I could see it working but I dont need another INDY movie. They ended at Last Crusade for me.

Wait, where did you read that George Lucas said that??

That is what he has stated several times.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

From the bottom of that same page...

**UPDATE SEP 08** Harrison Ford says George Lucas is currently in “think mode” for the next Indy, and Lucas has now done a 360 and said that Harrison will be the lead if it happens. It’s likely Lucas put the Shia idea out there to see how it played with the fans, and as everyone hated the notion, he’s retracted it.

Damn decent of him. I dont have anything against shia but I dont want him to the lead of any of my favorite films. Though a spinoff thing wouldnt be too bad. But he cannot lead an Indiana Jones movie if Indiana Jones is a secondary character.

Whew!  Close call there.  Glad George is 'currently in think mode' for the next Indy, as the last thing I would have wanted was a 'Mutt Jones' movie.  I think he lost his touch for a genuine audience-pleaser long ago.

I just hope Spielberg can reign him in a little with this material and give us all an Indy adventure REALLY worth waiting all those years for, this time around.

I don't know how a 1950's US headline would read exactly, but maybe something like "US archaeologist cleared from communist suspicion" could do the trick.

Thing is m.s, the footage of Laserschwert's (half-folded) newspaper is very brief and 'subtle' on the desk, and not in 'close-up', so any wording would need to be a short 'soundbite' in bold letters to even register properly.

I think there's too much wording in your example for it to work, unless Laserschwert says otherwise.  So something like

DR. JONES

CLEARED!

       or

DR. JONES

IN CLEAR!

       or

   LOCAL

LECTURER

CLEARED!

       or

    HERO

       IS

CLEARED!

would be more along the lines of what would be noticeable in the brief shot, I think.

What's your take on this Laser, where amount of wording is concerned?

I agree that we need one of those short headlines, definitely... first of all, there's not enough space on the table to have the newspaper only folded in half, so I had to quarter it. Second of all, the newspaper isn't even in focus, so the lettering has to be rather big to be visible in the (slightly blurred) background. And third, we only have a couple of seconds to read the thing, so a 3-word-headline should work best. The wedding doesn't need to be mentioned in the headline, I think. Maybe in a subtitle that's barely visible (but works as a nice easter-egg).

I think not everyone in that fictional world knows "Dr. Jones", so having him named as "Local Professor" or "Local Hero" might work best, as it sounds like a headline to get the readers interested.

By the way, which newspaper are they reading over there? In 1957 that is...

Hey Laser and all,

I agree with your point about not everyone knowing "Dr. Jones", but I'll take it a step further .... do we have much reason to think any significant number of people would know about him being under suspicion in the first place - as distinct from all the other people under suspicion at the time - so that a newspaper announcement about him being cleared would be warranted or make sense? I'm only really thinking about this now, but I'm wondering what would make sense to have in a newspaper when you REALLY think about it.

Of course, we're probably putting more thought into this matter than the total of thought that went into Indy 4 ... but what can you do? :)

Well, judging by the scene when the Dean gets Indy out of his class, I'd say that once his students got wind of it, the news spread all across the university, and then beyond that as well...

Or we'll just have it be in the school's paper ;)

Putting it in the college paper is actually exactly what I was thinking. Both he and his situation would be well known by the student body, so it would make perfect sense for an announcement to be made in that context. Even the front page would make sense. But in a city paper, probably not.

Perfect. The school paper, a short headline. I vote for "Dr. Jones cleared" or "Dr. Jones in clear". Works very good for me. A subtle addition that nicely wraps up the class scene from the beginning.

Yeah, or maybe even, "Dr. Jones Cleared; Promoted!"

Now that the discussion is leaning towards a school paper, I do have to wonder out loud how needed the newspaper is.  I mean, if the headline is simply "Cleared, Promoted" how is that information that isn't already in the film?

The business with the door to Indy's new office already tells us in no uncertain fashion that the matter has been cleared up.

I'm certainly not trying to talk anyone out of adding the paper, I'm just playin' devil's advocate as to it's necessity.

I think Antman's got a point here. The problem with the film isn't that we don't find out he has been cleared and promoted. The problem is that the movie doesn't give any credible reason WHY he is cleared. I can't think of anything he did in the movie that would prove he was innocent ... except the word of his soon-to-be-wife and his son ... and the testimony of a crazy-until-5-minutes-ago guy. Indy didn't even defeat the the "bad guy". The "bad guy" defeated herself.

The best thing, if possible, would be to think of something that could have reasonably been used to clear him and then try to make a headline out of that reason.

Has anyone actually finished or are nearing the finish line on these fan edits. I scrapped mine. I don't have the strength to do it anymore LOL. I guess I could take Angel's job for this thread and do mockups.

FROM RED TO WED!   ;)

of all the headline suggestions, this is the only one i like. I think people are trying to cram too much detail in a headline that should be as simple as possible.

Infodroid is nearing completion on his edit over at fanedit. Looking really nice - though as is his style, he is not afraid to take chances.

As for the headline, I see your point Heks, but I think with the audience knowing how close General Ross and Indy are and that the facts would have come out about the whole ordeal - I think the explanation of how is there enough and the newspaper would be a nice tough.

And From Red to Wed is funny, but makes it seem like Indy actually WAS a commie.

Just my two cents.

Here is a framed picture anyone can use for their edit. Just add glare to it and it will work. this is the fullest size. Which it doesnt need to be big.

This is obviously a publicity pic of Indy and Henry for Indy III. I think a rarer picture should be used.

That photo always bugged me.  I imagine this cut scene from Indy III where Indy and his dad are riding the motorcycle to Berlin to get the grail diary when they stop at a Glamour Shots to get a portrait taken.
