Info Wanted: Nothing Lasts Forever (1984)

Someone needs to do a rip of this movie whenever they show it overseas… I’ve heard that they show it fairly often in Australian and such but it has never been shown here in the US and it doesn’t look like it’s ever going to get a DVD release due to legal difficulties due to the high number of copyrighted clips used in the movie to give it it’s 1930’s look and feel…

There is a version floating around in the usual channels online, ripped from a 20 year old tape (which isn’t all that bad, mind you, this is a 20 year old tape) but it is plagued with dropouts and tape interference from time to time

The rip that's floating around is probably mine. There is another copy that surfaced recently, ripped from a German TCM broadcast. It was dubbed in German, but the guy who ripped the XviD of it that's on Cinemageddon used the audio from my rip (and also the video for a couple short scenes that were deleted). That's probably the best copy circulating.

I've been told by a reliable source that Warner Bros. would like to do a DVD of it (Schiller would be involved and bonus materials exist), but they can't figure out how to make the numbers work. Shame.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

really? that's pretty cool!

Anyways, I've heard the same thing, digitalbits posted a chat some time back and a warner rep said that the project is on the "middle burner"

Anyways, is the german tcm video any better than the uk version I have? if so I'd love to see it as I can't find it anywhere... nvm... I'm checking cinemageddon atm...

by the way RB, I just recently checked out a Johnny Mnemonic extended cut thing you did - good stuff

sorry for the double post but i think your rip of this is not the same one i downloaded.... mine was only 500 mb flat... and only about 400 x 300 resolution... so it looks like there are 3 copies circulating at the moment...

Oh, well, my mistake. Anyway, the "CG" version up there is still the best thing I've seen circulating yet.

i'm checking out the CG german print and the mysterious 500 mb version i have simultaneously (playing one in media player and one in vlc) and it seems the 500 mb version has better detail and black and white contrast - the TCM version is quite a bit bigger but dark and with less detail... I wish i had the ability to adjust the contrast and change the black and white segments to pure black and white, not just greyscale, cuz it's got a bit of a green tint to it

also, i don't think they used your audio as a source to replace the german audio, unless your vhs rip has a UK PG rating at the front of the film... in any case i'm downloading yours as we speak, but it's taking forever, probably won't be done til tomorrow morning...

Oh, huh. I shrug at the situation. All I know is that I've scoured the internets and obtained the best copies I can and I can enjoy the flick whenever I please.

Finally finished downloading your rip today and it has much better audio than the mysterious 500 mb version I downloaded HOWEVER yours runs 3 mins longer, and I thought maybe yours had some extra scenes. I haven't finished watching it but at the moment it just looks like PAL speedup on the other 2 instead...

Plus yours has less zoom than the 500 mb version (I keep saying 500 mb version... how should we refer to it as from now on?)

SO....

Would anyone be up for collaborating with me to build the most complete version of the movie with ZERO audio and video dropouts? I have 3 sources, I think it's doable... I just do not know how to do video compositing, or what programs I would have to use to do so

Aside from sound, this is actually and sadly the best version around in terms of picture and content (complete with drawing test scene) …
