I know it by both terms. But automated is correct. Still my comment stands on what i was talking about, i was not be anal rententive on terms from the dictionary of making films if such a thing exists.
Still there is nothing automatic about it. You have something sitting in a booth recording their lines just like you would for voiceover.
Back then in the days of analog recording you did not have a computer workstation and the ability to drop in dilaogue in a section of the film with the click of a mouse using a waveform editor.
Lucasfilm's own automated system original at sprocket systems was called soundroid, Spocket eventually became skywalker sound. And additinally other aspects of sprocket systems became the THX program.
