MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released) — Page 30

I think I remember Magnoliafan saying some time ago that because there was such a problem with edits being sold on eBay, he did not make them into DVDs. So if you do manage to find formatted DVDs of MagFan's edits, they'll have had to be made by someone else, not Magnoliafan. I know I got them as .avi's a few years ago off Myspleen, but I'm not sure where they'd be now.

Speaking of Magnoliafan, I guess he lost interest in doing an ROTS edit long ago? Pretty sure I remember him talking about being in the process of doing one, but being as we are now in the year 2009 and the movie came out on DVD back in 2005, I'm going to go ahead and assume that it is not happening.

I would have liked to have seen someone tackle ROTS in some extreme way, but so far I have not heard of any edit that does more than a little snip here and there.

Yeah, that screen shot of Qui Gon's spirit at the end had me really excited. I bet Magnoliafan had some great sutff in store for us, but his last post in this thread, and even his last blog entry was over a year ago, so I am a bit worried. I guess I shouldn't expect his Episode 3 project to be finished, or those special edition Balance of the Force and Clone War cuts he was talking about. :(

Well, there's still some hope that Adywan will actually get around to "Revisiting" all 6 Star Wars Episodes, although I'd say that's a pretty long shot too. I'd be impressed if he actually got Empire Strikes Back rivisited out this year, so even if he does intend to do the next 4 films, it would probably be several years before we actually see them.

hi all,

i've uploaded the V1 SL DVD of "balance of the force" (which i received from rikter in 2004) to rapidshare.  links are available via linktalk.

also, i've created entries for magnoliafan's "balance of the force" over at fanedit.org - to condense a bunch of great information in this thread (and rikter's DVD thread) - boon should have it posted to the website soon.

i will be doing the same with "the clone war" tomorrow, so check link talk again tomorrow night for more download links :)

P.S. if anyone has additional subtitles for either of magnoliafan's edits, i would be very grateful for a PM :)

I like his reimagining of Jar-Jar Binks. His attitude reminded me of Duck Dodgers. :P I do wish they had done a dub instead of a sub. There were a lot of subtitles to read, and while I have nothing at all against reading, I do watch a film to watch a film. If I want to spend a lot of time reading while being entertained, then I'll pick up a book.

I've been pretty much dormant for a few years, working on other more pressing projects, but I just figured I would drop some info out there for you guys.

You guys can see a slightly updated version of Balance of the Force on youtube. While I was putting the segments together to upload, I find myself going a tad Lucas on the thing and making mostly minor alterations ( a few extra lines of dialog here and there, etc).

Here's a link to that:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=34E13B985D72F267

I'm also about halfway through uploading a slightly reworked "Clone War" up there as well:

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=21AA1FFFE793F80B

When I've got Clone War all uploaded, I'll finally put together some features for these and maybe a commentary and get a DVD out there for you guys.

Any requests for particular features on the discs? Right now, I've just kinda got some abandoned concepts (hilarious alternate failed attempts at dubbing Jar Jar, etc), a few deleted scenes or alternate sequences, and then Episode II, I think I actually have 3 different cuts sitting here on hard drive (a shorter one, the regular one which is my preference, and then an extended one that adds in additional scenes that while cool, aren't really needed to move the plot along).

And in case anyone was wondering about progress on Episode III, I just completed the toughest shot that had been holding that up, though there are a few time consuming hurdles left to tackle. Still, its almost done and should be out in the next couple months.

I also threw up a twitter, if you guys want to follow the progress or just bug the hell out of me, to light a fire under my ass to get this stuff done.

One other thing I will throw out there.

From time to time, people gripe about the reversed, garbled foreign languages for Jar Jar, the Viceroy, and a few others.

I'm not particularly opposed to dubbing alien dialog over them, per se. Its just that the few times I've seen people dub into pre-existing films its been pretty laughable. If any voice actors want to volunteer and send me some voice samples at magnoliafan78@hotmail.com, I'd be glad to check it out and give them consideration.

Nice to hear from you, my first exposure to fanedits were your two prequel edits.

Since seeing them my PT experience has been different every time as instead of watching the official DVD's I tend to watch a new edit instead.

I think the main reason why some people (and I include myself here) don't feel satisfied with the garbled speech effect is not so much the sound (though it doesn't quite feel like an alien language) it's more the long duration.

In the OT when Chewie, Greedo, Artoo, Jabba etc speak it's usually in short bursts where much of the translation comes from the reaction of the English speaking characters.

With Yoda the decision to have him speak a form of English was a wise one, the training scenes would have been almost unwatchable (especially for large 'target' section of the audience) if Mark had to interact with an alien speaking an alien language and a droid speaking in beeps and bloops.

This was carried over to Admiral Ackbar and it's debatable as to wether that added or subtracted from the tone of the ROTJ but the briefing scene with an alien speaking an alien language would create all manners of shifts in tone and frustrate a lot of the children that make up a significant part of the intended audience.

In TPM the aliens and droids mostly speak English and as it's shot that way the action isn't structured to give us much in the way of non-verbal clues as to what they are saying.

Liam and Ewan don't help carry Jar-Jar's performance in the same way that the original cast help carry Chewie or Artoo's (presumably nobody thought they needed to, he speaks...well sort of).

The Trade Federation in BOTF spend a long time only talking to each other and droids and it's a distraction for a film like Star Wars to spend a long time reading subtitles, in a way that isn't so much a problem with Bergman for example.

Maybe it's time to re-invigorate this thread http://www2.originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Voice-Actors-for-Fan-Edits-and-Re-dubs-Thread/topic/10624/

Hi MagnoliaFan I would be interested in what parts you took out for your shortest clone wars version.

As far as particular features a few alternate subtitles would be great if possible.

The shortest one redubs the droid in the archives from the deleted scene, who tells Obi-Wan that the dart comes from the Kamino system and where that is located. It bypasses the diner scene,  the younglings "Lost a planet, Obi-Wan has", and the Jedi Hangar scene with Mace. I suppose it also replaces the Jedi library scene, but I cut that one anyway because the librarian's performance is just horrible and without the "Lost 20" conversation, the scene is just meaningless.

It was something I did as an experiment, and though I like the way the Analysis droid scene turned out, I don't really have a problem with the diner scene or the youngling scene, and I like some of the information conveyed in the hangar scene. So its a shorter alternate cut that I made, but not my preferred cut, if that makes sense.

Here is a look at the deleted/alternate scene from the shorter cut:

That might be tricky as the OP hasn't posted since 2005 It might be possible for you to start a new thread and get someone like Jay to merge the two together??

I'm only a Scotsman and not knowledgeable about such things.

just watched ur droid scene, thats fantastic, could not tell it was a redub.

Great work

It sounds a bit like Roddy McDowall, that's too good to be a deleted scene.

Thanks. Glad you guys liked the redubbed droid. I thought the "May the Force be with you" seemed like a nice touch when I thought of it. It just seems like the Jedi would program their droids to end conversations like that.

Maybe I'll debate a bit more whether to use this scene in place of the diner scene and rework the youngling scene and the hangar scene to work with this....
