If anybody has any news on how well the 2006 GOUT dvds sold, I think a lot of us would be happy to hear it.

The 2006 DVDs were pretty high on Amazon's 'top sellers' list when they were released, FWIW, but I don't know the exact numbers.

Well, Paramount just released the original versions of the first six Star Trek films in a boxset on blu-ray and - with the exception of Wrath of Khan (which recieved an all out restoration and therefore had zero excuse not to look great) - it seems they seriously did a half-assed job. Undiscovered Country is the biggest offender, taken from a 1080i master.

Y'know, I've decided that with these big franchises the studios are going to keep going back to the well until it's bone dry because the vast majority of people picking up their releases are fans of the franchise first and movie fans second.

It feels like most Blu-ray releases of old movies are coming out half-assed. I am afraid only new movies will use BDs true potential, at least for a few more years. We started out with some pretty crappy DVD releases, but through double dipping, we we treated to some pretty decent rereleases. Hopefully most of us have learned our lessons with the DVDs, and won't be rushing out to buy a lot of these things when we realize they were not made to their fullest potential. y advice to everyone, don't throw your money away on rushed jobs like this. Hold your horses and be content with your DVDs for now if you can. This ST set was obviously thrown together in time for the new film, they shouldn't be able to get away with making inferior products, but they do because people always joyfully rush out to buy them, they don't complain about them until the doubledipping starts, then they whine about them as they pull out their credit cards to pay for the rerelease, effectively telling the studios, "Hey, you throw it at me, I'm buying it. No questions asked".

Are you saying Wrath of Khan was released and looks great or wasn't released with this set?

Wrath of Khan was released and looks great.

The others have too much DNR applied, as is the case with many modern Blu-Rays.

My prediction is that this will be the only Blu-Ray release of the theatrical versions of The Motion Picture, Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country and any future releases that improve on the quality issues raised with the transfers of I and VI will be the extended/director's cut versions instead of the theatricals.

Then George releases a new 6 disk set that does have changes to the OT. Are there any that you would like?

I am only interested in the OT, anamorphic and properly restored with the best original theatrical sound.  I don't want garbage mattes removed or improved backgrounds etc... those are changes to the content of the 1977 film.  As far as changes or alternative versions of the OT, there is only one change to the content of what we see in the GOUT that I would want, and that is listed in my signature.  (Every version I saw, in three different theaters in 1977, included that line, and it always drew laughs.  I still don't understand why it was removed.)

I would want two sets. The original releases of all of them with slight fixes in them like re-doing lasers, remastering sound (not re-dubbing) and maybe adding engine glows.

I would also like a Special Edition of the entire saga where Jar Jar's scenes are re-done completely so he isn't an idiot, he has correct gramatical speech and his voice is lower. Editing Anakin's lines in the prequels, making Yoda CG in TPM and redoing Yoda in 1-3 to make him a hybrid of the prequel yodas and the original yodas. Add in the deleted scenes, delete unneeded scenes (like Obi-Wan talking with Dooku). Colour Jango's armour like a clean armour of Boba's (without the scratches), rework the emperor's face in all of the films to make him more believable, add expression to Yoda's face and make his voice consistant in ESB so that it doesn't go higher than 1-3 and 6 (in the movie, his voice is very high at times), rework all of the explosions in the OT, re-cut the duels in the OT to make them faster paced. Add flashback scenes in the OT (Obi-Wan remember the old times, and Vader's remunitions while Luke is being shocked). Have the emperor hand Anakin a new lightsaber in the holgram of the Jedi Temple and then Obi-Wan picks up Anakin's old lightsaber (could easily be done from afar with CGI) so that in the final battle, Anakin's lightsaber is red. Anakin's eyes should be consistantly yellow once we see him on Mustafar. (They are only yellow in one shot, wth?) Add music to the podrace scene and to the execution scene. Re-dub Greivous's voice, get rid of Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!" and change it to him just yelling "AAAAARGH!" with everything in the room floating and flying violently. For OT do a lot of what Ady did.

This way I could have the original ones, and a more modern saga.

and it's a lowdown dirty shame if true.

It's the whole reason I decided to bring it up in this thread. The Trek films are just as near and dear to my heart as the OT. Undiscovered Country was one of the first movies I saw in a theater, which was one big reason I was so excited for the blu-ray as it's the first release of that version of the movie on home video ever.

Remember how we all felt after we got confirmation the OUT dvd was gonna be just the laserdisc transfer? Yeah, that's about how I'm feeling right now.

But C3PX is right, it looks like - just as with dvd - we'll have to wait for the double dips of the studios' big catalogue titles on blu-ray.

I thought it wasn't removed, it was just a late addition, appearing only in the last mix that was done? (Then the various home videos over the years used the stereo mix, maybe I'm confused)

The blu of Star Trek The Motion Picture actually looks really good to me! (and VI looks the worst).

As for Star Wars on blu-ray, I've given up trying to guess how it's going to go down. 2004 version first? New version first? 3D release first? Smell-ovision? Gay porno version first? Originals first like every other series? At this point I have become like a frustrated profiler, trying to get into Lucas' head in an 80s MANHUNTER-style montage.

I have to admit that I don't really know much about the various mixes.  Since all the versions I saw in '77 had it, and I never saw a version without it until SW came out on VHS, it just seems to me like it was removed.  I guess more accurate would be to say that I still don't understand why it wasn't included in versions released for consumer version (that is, until the SE).
