Does anybody know if Temple of Doom being a prequel to Raiders (that it takes place before Raiders) is ever in any way indicated on the screen in any of the Indy films?

Never been a question to me, I always thought it came before Raiders

Yes, right at the start of the film. As Indy is coming in to Club Obi-Wan, "Shanghai, 1936" flashes on the screen. In Raiders, it says "Peru, 1938".
My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.
Thanks. Does anybody know if Crusade is ever dated onscreen?
Yep, that's dated too. The Young Indy bit says "Utah 1912" and then it becomes "Portugese Coast, 1938", so since Raiders is also 1938, you can put it either just before or just after Last Crusade.
Don't you have the discs? Wouldn't it be faster to check this for yourself instead of waiting for someone to answer on here?

No, Raiders and Crusade take place two years apart.
From the opening titles in each film (checked on my DVDs):
Raiders: South America, 1936
Temple of Doom: Shanghai, 1935
Last Crusade: Utah, 1912; Portugese Coast, 1938
I don't know about Crystal Skull outside of the fact that it was set in the fifties, since I don't own the DVD.
And the Temple of Doom prequel/sequel debate ultimately doesn't matter - it's set a year before, yes, but it was clearly meant to be seen after Raiders and not before. It's a sequel. It just happens to be set earlier.
Whoah. Crusade certainly does not take place in the same year as Raiders. I just checked Wikipedia, and it lists Doom in '35, Raiders in '36, and Crusade in '38.
Funny, though, because I remember it as '36, '37, and '38.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.
Ok, I had the numbers wrong on TOD and Raiders. I was posting from memory earlier. For Crusade, I was home and had the DVD to reference.

Temple of Doom and the Yound Indy series were Lucas first prequels.
He should have learned his lesson.
But he did not he went and made 3 star wars prequels films. 4 if you count the clone wars animated movie.
Still Doom was made with Spielberg. Young Indy was not. Young indy also did not have John Williams. Probably 2 very big mistakes. and also no ford in young indy except for 1 episode.
As VaderisnotHayden said he prefers a bad film with the real indy harrison ford with being Directed by Spielberg and music by John Williams than young indy. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had all involved. Except the most important people Douglas Slocombe who is like 90 years old or somthing the cinematographer, and no Lawrence Kasden or Jeffrey Boam as screenwriters. Spielberg accepted the script by Darabount and was a go to shoot it. But Lucas rejected it.
I remember the Ford in the Young Indy inserts the dialogue was pretty bad and the end scene was pretty laughable. Also Ford looked like Richard Kimble and not indiana jones in that beard.
I still to this day wonder had river phoenix not died would they have made a Young Indy series of movies. I know ford was happy with Phoenix playing him in last crusade. Ford knew him from working together on the film mesquito coast. We all know that they had to recast the younger indy with Sean Patrick Flannery. And that it was made as a tv series. Though shot on film and the series shot around the world and had a very film like production unit. The young indy crew is mostly who Lucas used to make the star wars prequels. Rick McCallum being the most noted person.
“Always loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice. Another shitty, clueless, revision like Greedo and young Anakin’s ghost. What a fucking shame.” -Simon Pegg.
I originally thought Doom being a prequel was Lucas revisionism when I got the last VHS set before the DVDs with the "Chapter" numbers on the side. Took me years to actually READ THE SUBTITLES and see that it was always supposed to be before. I believe I read an interview that it being a prequel explains why there aren't any Nazis. Like being in China and India isn't enough of an explanation. Still doesn't answer the question of whatever happened to Short Round.

Oh short round. He is in like 2 books but that is about it. I read Indiana Jones books all of the time simply because they are treated with respect to the characters. He pretty much just pops up. I guess they went their seperate ways. What in the hell happened to Willie Scott. What happened to all the girls that james bond makes boom boom with at the end of every OO7 movie. I guess things are better left unknown. Ignorance is bliss.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Actually, TOD being a prequel was Speiberg's idea. He wanted a more James Bond-ish introduction to Indy. That's the only reason why it's set before. After all, the idea for Indy came about when Spielberg confessed to Lucas that he'd always wanted to direct a James Bond movie, and Lucas countered with something "better than James Bond" - Indiana Jones.
And of course Harrison looked like Richard Kimble - he shot the inserts in between shooting days on The Fugitive.
Thanks everybody for the info. :)
