Hey man, I sent you a PM. ;)

I've been busy. I kinda got caught up in film school, spending hours and hours editing films and doing post sound, I got a new job, and somebody decided to make me an admin over on TFN. So things have been hectic lately. I'm probably not going back to school in the fall, so I've finally got some free time to spend again.

This is going to sound fake but its good to see you're OK. Aside from the X0 project we missed you. It wasn't the same around here.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Welcome back Zion... I guess that bumps up the number of remaining X0 members from 2 to 3.  Too bad Laserman got sucked into a parallel dimension where the internet was never invented... still, hope he's ok.

With Zion back (and presumably MeBe's laserdiscs), does that offer a glimmer of hope that the project might continue at some point in the near future?  Or is this thing still dead in the water due to Laserman's absence?  Someone jog my memory... what, exactly, was Laserman doing that the other members are unable to do themselves?

Going from memory, Laserman had some kind of hardware/software setup called "Black Magic" which allowed him to combine multiple video sources of a scene to get the most detail. I think he was using this to improve the image captured by the X0 player.

With Zion back on the scene (welcome back!), I'd like to re-propose that the raw captures be released.

Please, guys. Too much work went into this project to see it die.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I wonder if the EditDroid guys would be interested in helping with teh X0's.  They are pretty tech savvy.

Now how did I miss that Zion was back?  Sorry I didn't give a welcome man - you really have been missed.
@Sluggo: Isn't the editdroid team a bit private with their work?  I don't know if things have changed since Star Wars, but I was under the impression no one really knew who they were...

Wow.  I never thought I'd see the day when XØ would be around.  Now, forgive me, but I'm not sure if I understand what the benefit of having another Laserdisc version would do...  What's the point of the project again?

What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was ignoring any activity going on in this thread because I thought it was just a bunch of people saying I wish I wish. Why Why Why. But things are sounding a little sunnier.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Well, originally, this project was devised in order to produce the best OUT laserdisc transfers available.  At the time this whole thing began, the only copies of the OUT floating around the internet (to my knowledge, at least) were ones like TR47's, Dr. Gonzo's, Citizen's, Moth3r's, Cowclops's, etc.  As good as some of these were (Moth3r's PAL / Dr. M's NTSC versions being the best, IMO), all suffered from quality issues in one form or another (poor colour balance, soft image, low brightness, etc.).  Check out these screen cap comparisons over at Apt Irrelevance for examples.

In response, the X0 Project set out to create the highest quality LD transfers possible, first by using the X0 player to obtain as pristine a rip as possible, then by going through the entire film and restoring it (i.e., removing dirt, scratches, garbage mattes... they even developed a program to restore the original starfield in the film's opening title crawl).

Then... the GOUT came along.  For some, this meant the X0 Project was dead.  However, as the team points out on their website, the GOUT still suffers from a variety of problems, thus still requiring a preservation effort such as this one.

So, now, the question of the X0 Project's usefulness is debatable.  Some feel that the GOUT provides a sufficient preservation of the OT, especially when converted to anamorphic video and with g-force's script applied.  Others, meanwhile, contend that the X0 team can still turn out a superior product to the GOUT, as evidenced by some of the screencaps and webdocs they've shared with us (check the links on page 1 of the thread or on the X0 website).

Nice summary, corellian77.  I felt like I was reading a wiki article.

I've watched the GOUT on an HD projector on a 96" screen.  It is absolutely unacceptable to anyone who is concerned with quality.  This is why a project like the X0 is necessary.

Author
Time

Agreed.  I'm 100% convinced that the X0 Project, if completed, will turn out a product far superior to the GOUT.

I liked the thing about saving the star field. You can see the star field on the gout if you turn the brightness way way up but it ruins the picture quality. I did it with Return Of The Jedi during the space battle and the emperors slugs were horribly visible. Its like was burned into the film.

As we've posted in the past, Laserman being unable to continue with the project has been the biggest setback of all. The things he was doing with the Black Magic system were just incredible. I've spent a lot of time in the last couple years searching for an alternate way to achieve the same results, but with no luck.

That aside, it'd be a shame if the X0 captures never saw the light of day. I definitely want to release something, we'll have to decide in the near future exactly what.

I'm also working on a cutom ROTS DVD complete with "Backstroke" subs from marioxb and the official RiffTrax commentary. I definitely need to do a Holiday Special DVD next.

That Backstroke/Rifftrax ROTS sounds great! I don't know why someone didn't do a proper Backstroke years ago. I mean, they could've just taken the regular DVD and manually added the subtitles as they appear in Backstroke. If someonme already did, I certainly don't know about it. Always up for more Holiday Special goofiness, too. ;)

Great to see some fresh activity in this thread again!

Hi all

I have been a star wars fan for a long time, i got into laserdiscs a few years ago. Been watching this, i got the Definitive collection from Japan one of the last produced, with the documentaries. i got some of the best gear money can buy for laserdisc transfer. Making my own hybrid player from Sony C2Ex as base and refined overkill electronics from Mdp 999 (3 isolation transformers in one player..) 40kilos plus. Direct Bnc-Bnc (Almost lossless Belden 7731a) Runco Vfc 4404 (Commercial grade 20k$) Then s-video into capture card. I watched Goldeneye the other day, compared the output from this with my 2,5k Denon La3500 and was blown away of how good the image was, colors, skintones etc. Will make a new thread once i start capping. I believe every bit of mods help, clean power is one big part of getting the best out of it.
