Goodbye Prequels FOREVER

I tried Mr Lucas.  I really did try and enjoy your Star Wars Prequels.  But, I just can't.  They suck that bad.  Well, I gathered all my Star Wars Prequels merchandise I had, not alot surprising, and threw it in the garbage.  I don't even acknowledge their existence anymore.

Did you throw away your 1997, 2004 special edition merchandise as well as Indiana Jones IV stuff.

Because that stuff is just as much garbage as the prequels.

Reminds me of the blog post i saw somewhere once that said "don't worry.  George Lucas still destroying star wars"  Which followed up the same sites "don't worry Lucas still raping your childhood". LMAO.

I guess some people really hate the clone wars cartoon series lucas is doing and the live action tv show.

I feel the same way, IrishLuck.  I'm keeping an open mind for fanedits - and, of course, the currently-only-theoretical animated rewrites.  But if it weren't for my pack-rat parents, I'd get rid of our copies of Episodes I and II (we don't own III) and the Clone Wars volumes I and II, just like I got rid of disc 1 of each of the GOUT DVDs - the CD shredder portion of our paper shredder :-)

Hang on, should a least one person keep hold of their SE's for preservation perposes only. In years to come theres going to be none of these things left to show people why they just aint Star Wars at this time. Even the Holiday special will be more popular (for the same reasons), and more common to get hold of....

(EDIT) Im still struggeling to to keep my PT/SE DVDs on the shelf, but damn, it gets really hard at times!

There again, ive got shelf loads of crap films that i dont have a problem with untill i run out of space. I know the first in the line of fire in 200 DVD's time, then i cant keep these for preservation perposes any longer...sorry.

I have the entire prequel trilogy on DVD, all recieved as gifts from my family since they know I am such an SW fan. They are packed away in a box in my garage somplace. They are a good thing to own for the sake of obtaining fan edits with a clean concious, but other than for that, I wouldn't miss them if I never saw them again.

Nope, they're gone!

Landfill. Almost the best place for them (other places have been suggeted in the past, i know, but this was a quick and easy slaughter). And if anyone wants to go on about the enviromental issue of that, then i say stop giving us crap in the first place to fill it up with.

Just thinking about this subject gave me strength to enpower myself to leave it to some other poor sucker to keep 'em for preservation.

I payed for them im affraid, so i feel raped.

But a great positive is Ive got 206 places for DVDs now. Hooragh!

Yes, im shallow.

Dear Darth Solo,

I sympathize with you. Be assured, you are not alone. Many individuals feel the way you do, but I feel the need to point out your poor usage of the word "raped". You choose to pay for them. It was consensual. May have been a poor choice. He may not be the guy you thought he was when you gave yourself to him, but you choose to do it. At any rate, glad to hear you got out of an unhealthy relationship. I don't know what it is, but some people really seem to hang onto things they think they should like but don't. There should be a lot less people saying, "Man, I hate the PT, every single time I watch it I feel like throwing up!" and a lot more saying, "Ah, I barely remember the PT. I haven't seen it in ages." I wish more people would stand up for themselves, take control of their lives, be true to themselves, and put an end to their unsatisfying relationships with poorly made films.

In my own personal experience with the PT, I spent a lot of time caring about it and trying to force it to be the series of films I wanted it to be. It took me a while, but finally I realized they are what they are. The problem wasn't with it, the problem was with me. We just were not meant to be together. I can't force them to be something they aren't through pointless fan editing. It was not fair to them, and it was not fair to me. It was a difficult decision, but ever since we went our seperated ways I have felt much better about myself, and much more optimistic about life in general.

I wish you the best of luck with your future film relationships,

The only reason that I keep my SW Prequel DVDs was so that I could legally create and own fanedits of the three films - apart from that (and the "Making Of" features of TPM disc 2), I would've tossed the original versions long ago.

C3PX, I agree.

The great thing about the PT is it is a seperate entity from the OT, so it is easy to pretend it doesn't exist.  I have always thought of the SW saga as 2 trilogies, even when the PT movies were being released.  It is a simple backstory that you can choose to ignore or add on to the SW trilogy.

Now I think it would have been tougher if Lucas had made 7,8,9 and the further adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han.  Just say those sucked, and now you would have essentially a continuation of the adventures of our beloved characters, and that would be tough to let go off.

I forget many movies from every movies series.  Here is are the movies that exist in my world:

T1 & T2

Superman I & II

SW, Empire, Jedi

Back to the Future

Jurassic Park

Alien & Aliens

Rocky I, II, III, IV, Rocky Balboa

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Jaws

Its real easy:)

Yeah, throw out all of the stuff that you (or somebody else) PAID FOR!  Yeah, that will sure show ol' Georgie boy!  It's not like he didn't get your money already or something...

I say just hang on to the stuff, you never know what life will be like way down the road.  Do you know how many people later kicked themselves for throwing out their  baseball cards back in the day b/c they were mad at the player and/or team, or because they didn't follow baseball anymore?!?

Yeah, CO, got them in my collection already.

Thanks for the words of support C3PX, but it was real easy in the end. I think things are going to be much easyier to deal with now im not in denial.

I guess i go out, see the words Star Wars on a box, then just buy it.

Its something im stopping from now on, after being burnt so many times lately, and just filling my house with crap....

(Next test may be the Blu-Rays).

As for the Hot.Like.C3PX thread, i just need somwhere to go to voice my concerns and get some help from like minded people. Definatly!

"Raped" is to cutting a word close to the bone, but there aint a middle ground to describe it, so we go to the extreame, i guess, to describe our pain.

I need to get away fom these people who love and buy into EVERYTHING Star Wars.

Not really words of support, I was just goofing off and spoofing on advice columns. Had just gotten off work and felt like blowing off steam by amusing myself, and hopefully a few others. That is not to say my words didn't have a good deal of truth to them.

I really did go through a frustrating stage of trying to edit the PT myself, or find the perfect fan edit so I could enjoy them along with the OT. Finally decided it wasn't worth it and that no amount of editing would ever make me enjoy the PT. Instead of destroying my PT, I condemned them to spending eternity taped up in a cardboard box, knowing they are unloved and unwanted. Destroying them, while it may be more satisfying to some, to me it is letting them off too easily.

It would be fun if we all saved up our unwanted SW DVDs, and shredded the things, boxes, inserts and all in industrial quality shredders, and send them to Skywalker Ranch by the thousands. It would be awesome, and would probably make national news. Unfortunately, it would be hard to get that many fans to part with their stuff, no matter how much they claim to hate them, and most those who would be willing to destroy disc one of their GOUTS and their prequels have probably already done so.

A lot of people talked about doing things like this (mailing them to Skywalker Ranch) when the GOUT first came out. Did anyone ever actually do it?

Then you are most definitely among friends. I think there are a good deal of reformed Starwarsoholics around these parts (and naturally, probably just as many if not more non-reformed).

As much as I despise the Special Editions, I have kept them.  Not that I watch them.  The Prequel DVDs are packed away along with the Prequel Fan Edits.  I threw out the VHS copies of The Phantom Crap and Attack of the Douches.  From now on, the cut-off date is 1990.  I buy no Star Wars Merchandise unless it was made before 1990.  Overboard may be, but it's a choice I am enjoying.  Being surrounded by all the classic merchandise from my childhood feels so much better!

This is a depressing thread, yeah. Due to the fact of the depressing state of where Star Wars is now.

I started posting sarcasic comments originally, but, bit by bit, im getting serious now.

Stupid thread, what gave me a kick up the arse.

Actually, if the forums had existed after the original 77 release, what would the hardcore members truely thought of the the Empire Strikes Back after seeing it?

 Attack of the Douches

Wow! I think I just experienced the most terrifying image in my mind. The idea of a hundred little douches surrounding a house of survivors, closing in on them, thumbing against the boarded up windows trying to find their way in...

This could potentially become the most frightening horror film ever made... if someone ever bothers to make it...

I actually did.  I bought two GOUT boxsets (one for me and one for my little brother as a Christmas gift).  Both times I mailed the SE discs back to Lucasfilm in a paper sleeve, politely saying that I had no interest whatsoever in any special edition and thanked them for releasing the original trilogy on DVD in some form.  I also stated that I looked forward to a future restored anamorphic release of the original trilogy and that apart from that, no other Lucasfilm release would appeal to me.

Won't make a damn bit of difference but it was cathartic.

*Claps enthusiastically* I agree with every one of these, especially Back to the Future.  Both sequels were complete and utter shit and should never have been made.

And I don't necessarily pretend the three Indiana Jones sequels don't exist ... they're just an entirely different thing from Raiders for me.  Raiders is a perfect film ... and then Spielberg made three movies starring Harrison Ford that all happen to have Indiana Jones in the title.  They're not completely awful (that includes KOTCS) ... they're just painfully average.

That's the last I'm going to say on the Indy sequels - I'm starting to feel like a broken record.

I loved the indiana jones prequel and sequel excluding KOTCS. Temple of Doom may have not been everybody elses cup of tea but I thought it was quite fun. Raiders really wasn't perfect it was flawed in many ways. A good movie isn't supposed to be something that everyone is gonna conform to and call perfect.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Quick, name five flaws in Raiders as fast as you can without having to stop and think about it. GO!

Not trying to say Raiders is perfect, obviously no film is. As far as action films go, I think Raiders is a perfect example of one well done.

The argument from EyeShotFirst that I quoted above is a classic argument for defending crap in the middle of a room filled with gold. Sure, this piece of shit my dog deposited on the floor is far from perfect, no arguments there! But come on, none of these gold bricks in here are perfect either.

Some things are better made than others, that is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of fact. I like a lot of movies most people think are crap. I really enjoy the first two Planet of the Apes sequels, but I don't hesitate to admit they are no where even close to the standard of the first film. The first film is a cinematic classic, the second and third are crap that I happen to like. The fourth and fifth are crap that I enjoy watching for time to time. Same for Back to the Future, I know the second two are shit, but I still enjoy them. It would be pointless for me to feel the need to defend my enjoyment of these films by saying, "Well, the first Planet of the Apes/Back to the Future film really wasn't much better than the sequels."
