It was mentioned on the "ESB and ROTJ Wishlist" thread (and maybe here also) that maybe R2 should just fall straight down into the hole in the Falcon after he actives the hyperdrive.  However, this is what I discovered.

So it really doesn't need to be worried about. :-D

I always thought the Falcon should be MUCH smaller than it is when it's attached to the Star Destroyer.  It makes the SD seem too small to me.

If it's too small, though, while it may be technically physically correct, it may be harder for the audience to see it (I remember the first time I saw the film, it wasn't immediately obvious to me what had happened). To us, the Falcon on the back of the SD is not only visible, but too big, because we know where to look. Those seeing it for the first time will not.

I'm not saying that it shouldn't be changed, I'm just saying that we shouldn't abandon watchability and dramatic effect for nit-picking technical correctness. Ady has always been exceptionally good about this, so I'm not worried; I just felt it was a point worth making.

And Cloud City in the trailer looks beautiful, Adywan. :-)

That brings a good question. Shouldnt the SD have some visible lights in the dark areas of the ship?

a good idea is to put smoke or an engine turned down just the eye locate it ( i have no problem with that)

Not necessarily; the SDs don't generally have a lot of lights on their exteriors, since it's not necessary to light up the dark areas because no one's walking around out there. ;-) Seriously, though, if the SD wouldn't have that light in other scenes, should we be adding it here? The idea of a light on the Falcon (the engine light in the back powering down, or something like that), though, is a neat one.

Thanks, 005. Man, I wish that bar wasn't there. Hilarity would ensue, I tells ya!

Darth Editous said he was doing it, so I wonder if he was going to ignore the bar, or get rid of it or what. Wish I could ask him!

I agree with Angel and Sojourn, if the MF is chosen to be reduced towards a more technical correctness a "engine-powering-down-effect" could be added to draw attention to the spot to avoid what Sojourn pointed out: people will not know where to look.

Something like that.  But there's a problem.  This full-motion shot that comes before the shot we're judging:

That is when the ship should power down, and it would be very difficult to shrink this as it moves back away from the Falcon in a nice perspective shot.  Not without Ady building his Star Destroyer a movie early.

Add the red Lights in front as well :D when MF is landing these two little leds are turned on.

No need for shrinking

I don't think the size of the Falcon needs to be changed.  It's large enough to be noticed, but not small enough to miss - post-RotJ dimensions be damned! :)

I also don't think it's necessary to add any 'engine glow' power down, etc. to tell the viewer "LOOK HERE!!!"  One of the nice things about the shot is that you don't necessarily see the Falcon right away.  When you finally notice it for the first time, you get that sense of "oh, there they are," and "I can see why the Empire wouldn't even notice them, since I didn't."  An engine glow would stick out and draw the viewer's attention to the Falcon too quickly.

Seriously, at this point in the discussion we're just grasping for additional things to change and/or kill some time to discuss them (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)  But, since these suggestions are coming so late to the party, they must not be all that necessary to fix in the first place.  Discuss at will, but keep the big picture in mind. It's easy to get bogged down in the minutia and the end product suffers from it, rather than benefitting.  I think Ady's covered all the minor annoyances, anyway! :)

"Jurassic Park was a great example of how even early cgi, done right, has a place in film"

They did use alot of elements besides just cgi they even used puppets for the head. That movie was way ahead of its time. I saw the documentary of it. They were gonna use stop motion animation. But they pushed technology. I don't think any film in the past 10 years has raised the bar quite like jurrassic park. They made me sink in my chair with the raptors. It is just a beautiful film. I wish spielberg would make films like he did from the late 70's to early 90's. His works were always so beautiful.

I agree. I think another outstanding example of cgi is Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within. I realize that many did not like the storyline, but I think that as far as an animated film goes, it still stands tall as one of the best, visually speaking. And check out Vexille also. Mind-boggling animation.

And yeah Disney disgusts me nowadays. They had such beautiful animation. My girlfriend owns all the classics. I can't believe they dropped traditional animation in favor of all cgi. Walt would be crying if he were alive, but then it wouldn't have happened that way.

Now back to topic...

2D animation has returned to Disney! Look Up "The Princess and The Frog". Also, Vaderios, Pixar is amazing, no one is allowed to say anything bad about Pixar >:( Wall-E was awesome and UP was also awesome (saw a pre-release screening)

Agreed. I only brought it up because if a size change was going to be made, I think it would make it even harder for the audience to find the Falcon. Hence, weighing the dramatic impact over the importance of exact dimensions.

Savage, you got us all wrong, we were talking about resizing the MF because of its size comparisson to the SD makes it look smaller or the MF too big in that shot, so we came to the conclusion that if the MF is reduced to keep a correct size comparison it could affect the chance to spot it in the back of the SD, so the idea came out to put some "engine-powering-down-effect" to help spotting. Hope that helps to clarify

JDK,

I do understand the point that was being made, but in my post I was just trying to bring some levity to the situation.  Technically, yes, the Falcon is too small in the shot (or the SD too small).  Shrinking the Falcon would make it more difficult to see, and if this is done an engine glow would help make it more visible.  However, my point is that the shot is pretty damned good as is.  The proportions may be a little off, but this has never bothered me in the slightest, and a I said, the revelation of seeing the Falcon for the first time does have some impact.

Adding the engine glow (whether the Falcon is shrunk or the same size) draws the viewer's gaze immediately to that spot and to me undermines the shot as is (Viewer sees SD in the distance...then the SD up close...scanning around...and oh! there's the MF!).  I'm as guilty of overthinking individual things in these movies as the next guy, and I think that this shot is one of those cases.

If the Falcon is shrunk is it technically better (from a size perspective)?  Yes.  Does the movie benefit from this fix?  I say no, and it may actually compromise the shot as it was originally composed.  I think the shot is perfectly fine (aside from colors and stars, that is)....

Again, just my 2¢ (or 2 pounds, as it were). ;)

next up is an old style red/cyan anaglyph

and lastly a shiny new amber/blue image for those of you in america who have your superbowl 3d glasses still kicking around the place

hope you enjoy - i'll do some more if they're popular - maybe on ady's images if he doesn't mind

(edit) manalive i just realised how big these pics are sorry - please don't copy them in on any replies - thanks

Another point I'd like to make is this, if you are gonna reuse cloud city buildings for other shots, or twice in the same shot, make them have different lights on, not exactly the same, that way it doesn't look like an exact duplicate. It would an amazing coincidence that a similar building has all the exact same window lights on or off. Tweak those lights to be different.

Something I did with an earlier image:

Nothing much here, just improved image quality, a slightly bigger/closer Falcon, a new starfield, and now, a few small asteroids in the foreground signifying that they are entering the asteroid field.

What do you guys think?
