JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works — Page 9

Just watched Twilight of the Republic the other night. I loved it! There's just one minor thing that I'm hoping you can fix for the dvd release and this is something that's been an error in the movie from the beginning. In the opening scroll it says thousands of solar systems have left the Republic. In actuality we only call our own system the solar system, all others are called star systems. Just like in ANH when Leia said, "The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

Yeah, that's been fixed to "star systems" for the DVD version (although compared to the other batsh*t-insane decisions that Lucas made with the Prequels, it seems like a pretty minor thing)

hey jason,

having just watched a few bits of the magnoliafan-cut, i was wondering what you think about his take on the prequels. i liked the way he overdubbed gungans and feds, and the story-changes that came along with that. however: since i prefer your edit as a whole, i was just curious to know if you were in any way considering to incorporate some of his ideas into a possible future re-do of your edits?

The changes seem interesting I would love to see it, however the links take you to a site that doesn't have for download......has anyone been able to access a site to download?

Well, posting links to fanedits is against the forum rules, so he can't do that.  Fanedit.org used to post links, but the MPAA put a stop to that, so now it just holds the information about each fanedit.

These edits, however, are up on linktalk, and if you're not a Rapidshare fan they're up on Demonoid as well.

Demonoid? torrents? mmmmm....interesting idea. I was confused by the whole linktalk deal, but torrents are much easier to find/get/open/download. Thank you ChainsawAsh.

The MPAA? arrrgghhhh....they remind me of "The Empire's sinister agents"

The "Version 2" DVDs of these fanedits are nearly finished - I just have to finish trailers for my EP2 and EP3 edits. The types of updates/changes on the DVD version (from the AVI version) will include:

ALL EDITS
- improved audio cuts/transitions
- fixed the SW title crawl for better pacing/speed with the soundtrack
- spelling corrections to title crawl and alien subtitles
- rewrites to a few portions of the title crawl and alien subtitles

EP2
- added the Anakin/Obi-Wan "Came to rescue you" exchange at the start of the Arena sequence (ends with Obi-Wan's "Good job" line) back into the film

EP3
- added most of the "Wookies/Clones VS Droids" opening battle back into the film (except for the droid voices and stupid "Tarzan Wookies" - they're been cut out); I realized that this scene is kinda needed as a "setup scene" for the later sequence where the clones try to attack Yoda
- remove the readded-deleted scene of "Padme confronting Palpatine in his office"

Sounds good. I'd ask for an ETA, but that gets tiresome. ;)

Hard to say - I gotta finish the DVDs first  and then ship them to another person for RS upload.

Forgot to mention this, but I'm probably going to remove the readded-deleted scene of "Padme confronting Palpatine in his office" in EP3:

Yeah, it's nice to see more of Padme in the film, but I realize now that the scene doesn't really add anything to the story and I think it's better if Anakin starts distrusting Padme at the end of the film (so that he no longer trusts the one person he once cared for the most). Plus, having the scene in the film seems to screw up chronological continuity (not just the "Obi-Wan engaging" Grevious" part, but the Coruscant scenes go from Day to Evening to Day when technically it shouldn't)

Nice, I like the editing of the trailers they're very good but I think the narrative text could do with a better font. Oh and the line "Witness the origin of Star Wars..." Doesn't really ring true with me, as the origin lies with ANH. I think a better line might be "Witness the beginning..." and then maybe thrown "...as you've never seen it before!" Just to tie in with the fact that this is an edit.

Oop, started writing this after seeing the trailer for Attack of the Federation I see you went somewhere similar for Twilight of the Republic though I'm not sure about opening all of the trailers with the same clip from ANH, it might be best to pick just one to open it with that. Anyway, I look forward to the DVDs! =D

I downloaded AOTF and TOTR and while AOTF was a VERY good fanedit with just a few minor flaws in your work TOTR was more prone to those flaws and I was a bit less satisfied. AOTF is almost flawless and I say almost because there are a couple of moments when you don't understand the reaction of the characters, case in point: when Qui-Gon jumps to the ship he tells about Darth Maul to OB1 and introduces Anakin, in your edit Obi and Ani just shake hands and that's it, but then it cuts to Qui-Gon getting a surprised smile that you don't get where it comes from. Of course you know in the back of your mind it's because Anakin's remark about the Jedi, but in you edit Qui-Gon's reaction seems out of place. Similar things happen in the Jedi Council scenes. As I said I liked AOTF a lot, Anakin seems more mature (in spite of jake lloyds looks and acting) but things like that momentarily take you out of the movie. I would have liked if you had done minor things like adding a droid language to the battledroids like the one the imperial  probe droid had on Hoth, certain scenes look ackward with the droids looking at each other silent, I agree there's no need for those stupid "roger roger" dialogues, but maybe an "alien" language that is creepy enough...like that probe droid sounds....same could go for the Neimoidians, with subtitles, their sounds could be more threatening...and it would enhance your edit more.

Now TOTR is a whole different cookie, you see more and more of those moments I said, especially during the Anaking / Padme scenes. Certain things that are set at the begining of the film are gone, like the whole Kamino finding: since there's no Dex and Obi-Wan can't find the planet at the archives are we to suppose that he just embarked on a wild goose chase? why would he go there? it just doesn't click. It's tricky since while you watch the edits you are playing the originals in your mind so sometimes you complete certain things to understand the plot, other times you just let go and take only your edit and you realize something is not making sense. Same goes for the duel scene. As your edit goes Count Dooku dispatches 2 JEDI single handedly and then for no reason he escapes while Padme is just arriving. In the original we know it's because Yoda just owned him, but since in your edit Yoda never came to the rescue, Dooku could've taken out both Jedi, Padme and the Clones.....it doesn't make sense why he would escape. And there are other moments like that where the editing just doesn't click. Maybe you can look into it and achieve something like AOTF....my 2 cts.

As far sa the Qui-Gon reaction shot to Anakin meeting Obi-Wan, I'll take an unexplained grin over "YOU'RE a jedi TOO?? Pleased to meet you!" anyday. That line was unforgivably cringe-inducing.

Also, vis-a-vis Dooku leaving after taking out Obi-Wan and Anakin...I think the idea is that he's a Jedi, not a Sith in these fanedits. Thus, he has no reason to murder them; he only needs to neutralize them so he can make his escape. Their disagreement is primarily political, not religious.

You do realize that those arguments actually prevent any improvement? I hate the "pleased to meet you" crap too but something could be done, like cutting the line down to "you are a jedi too?" and then going to Qui-Gon, or cutting it to "pleased to meet you" downing  the pitch and leaving it....I mean just cutting won't do it, some "Adywan-style" reworkings (like FX, sound, etc) must be done.....

You weren't reading the subtitles were you? The dialogue wasn't changed but in the subtitles she mentions a bounty hunter from Kamino.

A planet that doesn't show up in the archives but which Obi-Wan still magically seems to find.

(cutting the library scene and the "there it is, right where it's supposed to be" line would fix this pretty easily)

thank you DarthBo, it's not a matter of subtitles or not (which I did read). Yeah, she says that (Obi1 has no reason to just believe at face value a dying bounty hunter) but when he goes to the archive the part he needs is cut, so he just goes trusting the BH.....again doesn't click.

I'm not really a fan of MagnoliaFan's edits -  he had some interesting ideas here and there, but I thought the alien redubbing was poorly executed (it's a nice idea, but my hearing can tell too often when the voices have been changed due to imperfections in the soundtrack, sound effects, etc), I utterly HATED the Jar-Jar dialogue rewrites (no character should be saying "sh*t" or calling a child a "little bastard" in a SW movie, in my opinion), and he should've edited a lot more crap out of the films.

I mentioned this all before numerous times, but I'm not changing the Trade Federation voices - I felt it was too difficult (if not outright impossible) to do redub the aliens in a 5.1 surround mix at a quality that was 100% seemless and that I was 100% satisfied with (again, it's one of the reasons why I don't care for MF's edit).

Same reasons that Akwat Kbrana listed.

And the great name of Adywan is brought into the thread, once again making me and all other faneditors seem like complete and utter pigsh*t in the presence of the supreme god-child... :P

On a serious note, just cutting one line out of Anakin's sentence or pitching his voice to be lower does not change the fact that "You're a Jedi too? Please to meet you!" is a terrible crap-ass of a scene and the sequence DOES WORK BETTER without it (I also don't think Qui-Gon's reaction is out of place either, but whatever...)

Jason, what do you think about cutting the library scene and the "right where it's supposed to be" reference?  Those two things really do make the whole Kamino subplot more confusing in your edit.  If all he has to go on is the name, and it's been erased from the Archives, how does he know where it is?  Better to assume he got the location from the Archives.  It doesn't really hurt anything in my opinion, it just helps the understanding of that subplot.

Religion has nothing to do with dispatching the two Jedi, Obi-Wan is a threat on a political level since he knows the TF Viceroy is behind the attempt on Padme's life, Obi-Wan was a hostage, from every point of view if he is starting a war, which is why he is building so many battle droids, if he leaves two Jedi out there they could heal and come after him, tactics in war dictate he should have finished them, religion or no religion, at that point they were beyond politics and right into open war tactics, and tacts indicate dispatch your heavy threats....leaving that just makes him a weak character. But as Jason N said: whatever....

Maybe I'll cut the "right where it's supposed to be" line, but I'm extremely hesitent on cutting the library scenes, as it serves as a setup for the later "Obi-Wan/Mace" scene and the "deletion of Kamino" subplot plays a bit into the "Syfo-Dias/Clone Army Conspiracy" subplots (obviously, someone's trying to hide information on Kamino from the Jedi by deleting the Archive records of the planet)

ChainsawAsh pretty much nailed it right there. Thank you. You don't think the smile is out of place....? ok....

I just mentioned Adywan because he has "upped the ante" (sp?) so to speak as to the standard of which a fanedit can be, tough to reach? you bet, but he set a standard.

Now your edit can still be YOUR edit, your personal points of view as to what is important and what is not....I was just giving my opinion because I thought your edit was a GOOD edit which would make the films better, but it can stay just as your *personal* edit......
