That is something I never thought of... why didn't Lucas make JEDI more along the lines of GUNS OF NAVARONE and put the deflector dish on a mountain fortress or the like? Maybe that is yet one of the problems with JEDI and the following prequels is that he didn't go back to his sources: the movies he grew up on.
One thing that could be done possibly (hope you're reading, Ady):
if an establishing shot or two like the above could be done in JEDI, maybe the bunker that the Ewok battle takes place around could be at the foot of the mountain. How hard would it be to add a mountain face behind the bunker, so the woods the fight takes place in is at the foot of the mountain?
This could also better explain how the dish could go up in a spectacularly LARGE explosion and not kill the main characters: if they planted explosives on the reactor deep underneath the dish, which so happens to be powered by, say, a dormant volcano, the charges could serve a double purpose of not just destroying said reactor but opening the lava dome of the dormant volcano. End result = large explosion on top of mountain as characters watch from the distance seen in the above picture.
Also:
would it be possible to create an image for a "pan-down" shot similar to the "shuttle landing at night" shot above? I was thinking that you could have the dish on the mountain on top, with a scene of the rebels in the woods at the far bottom (so the picture would pan down from "dish mountain" down to the foreground forest as the rebels make their way towards it).
I would negate the TIE hanger and gun tower or make them much smaller.
