Monroville

When the dinosaurs in the first JURRASIC PARK can look damn near real and yet we still have $150 million + movies where the CGI stands out, you just have to wonder what the hell is going on in these FX houses.

Part of what is going on is the post-schedules have been cut almost in half on most movies, while the # of fx shots has doubled or tripled.

When JP came out, a "small show" for an fx house was under 100. Now a small show is under 500.

JP itself had around 60-75 CG animation shots of dinos.

The Lost World in '97 doubled that.

JP3 doubled TLW.

And on and on.

There's also the trend nowadays to farm out fx shows to numerous houses to get the job done.

So you can have on e big fx show being worked on by a handful of shops.

There's no guarantee that the quality is going to be consistent.

It's a rare thing today to have one big fx film being worked on by one house, the SW Prequels are some rare exceptions to today's norm.

JP1 was also still a bit of an experiment in CG.  They didn't want to push themselves into too many shots because they didn't know how well it was going to work in the first place.  T2 only had maybe a dozen or so shots of the T-1000 that were CG, the rest were practical FX.

Another thing that points out CG as being such is animation quality.  I remember a shot in one of those Sci Fi Channel "giant monster of the week" Originals where a giant snake got decapitated.   Now, we're talking about a flesh and blood creature here.  The head should have squashed and deformed a bit, like a half deflated basketball, but the way it was animated, the head bounced on the floor like it was a solid bowling ball.  Granted, those SFCO's aren't Hollywood level, but you'd think someone would have caught that in dailies, or at least thought of it in planning the shot originally.

But to build on a comment above, yes, focus and lighting is definitely being ignored in CG, either by choice or by incompetence.  Part of that I think is pride - they're so glad they created this uber-detailed CG model that they want to show it off and make sure people see all the work they put into it, so they keep everything sharp and clear and well-lit instead of doing what makes the shot look convincing.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I agree that the time has been reduced and the demand has expanded, but let's not forget computers and software double their power every 18 months, so it's not that far a stretch to ask for more shots in less time, the key is how far the director wants to go, in a show like SW you can't compare the ship you are modelling since there's no ships in real life, in Transformers and Iron Man (shows that set standard as truly flawless CG integration) you can compare your CGI to the real cars and prop-made suit....

"Now the Jedi are all but extinct" - Obi-Wan Kenobi, ANH

I said something a while back about the physics of CGI not convincing the mind that its real. Cant remember my exact words. But, whilst scaled models may not be any more convincing, they dont have the on screen plastic feel that CGI has untill this date, even when they make cartoon real life suits to mix in with basic CGI FX now use. Dont even go there with Tranformers!!! If you are making a case for CGI, maybe compare the directors cut of Battle Royale, compaired to the original release. Just not Tranformers, please!

Says it all when someone using a home PC can surpass the effects of the a major studio create when re-releasing a cult film.

Ady is right to use the models as opposed to computer based FX, as thats how Star Wars was, and simply should be (unless they get the physics of CGI nailed). Thats why the FX of the OT has 'until now' ish, stood the test of time.

...I thought most capital ships in the pt looked fake, like from a video game.

This argument is really tired, not to mention inaccurate. They did not look like a videogame.

sorry but it is pretty accurate to describe the way the larger ships looked in the final 2 films of the PT. there was just something about them that looked more like a piece of artwork than a real object. CG can work really well for smaller ships but larger objects should always be a real object. combine the two and that video game look is eliminated. you can tell that physical models were made for TPM. it had a whole different feel to it.

that's cool. however u want to do it. :)

btw darth solo, i hope that wasn't an insult

I think it can be done, not always, not all the time, but CGI can fool the eye, the are particular scenes galore when you see something incredibly real, none of this plastic thing...

Mentioning TPM. It was the last of the Star Wars movies to be shot with film. The rest were digital. I thought the film felt more like a star wars film than the rest of the PT. Ady will do a good job in taking the ships and making them real. When I make my science fiction movie it will be soley models. (I am gonna make a sci fi movie. When I get money I will give more information, I already have a draft of the story) Ady I will call you up one day for when i get started. I hope you will be a producer. This is a project that will be years down the line. Back to star wars

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Transformers had very meticulous CGI. It was very convincing. Star Wars PT on the other hand just seemed fake.  The Transformers looked like they were there

TPM was good for 1999, but the tweaks to ESBr make the model shots look realistic compaired to the CGI shots that have been added to ESB.

Bless.

Do you have a title for this EyeShotFirst, so i can look out for this (or an early title)?

I was sceptical about Adys bold claims, until he knocked me sideways with his vision. So go for it.

FFS DONT get me started about Transformers though!!! But im curious as to the mess he makes of Soundwave, but thats a different thread altogether.

Money seems to go in the wrong direction in film now-a-days is my point.

There again its always been that way hasn't it?

ILM's work will blow your butt off. It's more dynamic. There's more variety in the locales where they battle. And the designs for each individual robot has been relatively streamlined so you can actually tell them apart.

No name yet. But I will definitely let everyone know when I have a name. I want it to be in the vain of star wars but instead of just epic battles. I want my characters to go more places. this project can't be put into 1 movie I plan on making many films. I have been throwing around ideas. I already have some Ideas for my main bad guy. It's basically gonna be a Mozart or Verdi opera in space. No singing though LOL. And I will not bow down to hollywood and put well known people in it. If I could get gary oldman that would be badass though. One of my names for the movie that I can't seem to scrape from my mind is Galactic Symphony:World In Ruins. (music is a big character in this) This movie will make sense unlike alot of space movies. It's not a post apocalyptic movie. But something is gonna happen to earth besides it being destroyed.

i don't start the models until after i have finished the trailer so i can concentrate on those 100%. also, because i really think i have shown too much of this movie as it is, there will be no more previews. the trailer will be the last taste of what's to come until the movie is released.

Can't wait for the trailer. Instead of just throwing it into MediaPlayerClassic, I think I'm going to go through the trouble of putting it on my WDTV so my first experience of it will be on my flatscreen TV. I may even turn the lights down and pop some popcorn. And put on a red velvet smoking jacket.
