An online aquaintence of mine who was in Viet Nam told me that We Were Soldiers is the most accurate portrayal of a combat situation he's seen on film. Can't imagine an endorsement better than that. Also a great showpiece if you have a surround sound setup.

The Thin Red Line is probably my favorite war movie because it deals with the effects of war on combatants in a much more personal manner than most others. It has its fair share of blood and guts, but its introspection helps you understand the emotional toll war can take on its participants and their loved ones.

I'd also recommend Band of Brothers for this same reason. Great character development too. It takes a few episodes to warm up, but the combat footage is pretty intense; almost a direct reflection of Saving Private Ryan (not surprising considering it was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg).

Black Hawk Down is a bit short on substance, but with the events having taken place much more recently, the characters are more identifiable because they embody our modern sensibilities. By the way the soldiers talk and interact, you realize that these really are just kids we're sending into battle. The technology is more recognizable as well. I think these things help modern audiences identify with the material a bit more than films about wars in the past.

Classics include Patton and Full Metal Jacket (just for the bootcamp scenes alone).

Don't bother with Windtalkers. It's reminiscent of older war movies that were more gung-ho about combat so it doesn't stand up to the stark realities presented by modern war movies. Some of the action sequences are downright Rambo-like, with Nick Cage taking out entire squads armed with automatic rifles using nothing but a pistol. I was never a fan of John Woo because his movies really push the limits of suspended disbelief, and applying his style to a war movie leads to something pretty ridiculous.

Thanks for the heads-up, Jay. I haven't seen Thin Red Line yet, but now I think I'll have to.

I recommend DVDShrink for ripping DVDs. Even if it weren't freeware, it would be worth paying for. Very easy to use. I've reauthored and ripped a few DVDs to my hard drive and it works great. The only thing it can't do on its own is burn a backup; you need to have Nero installed so it can link up with it and burn a disc.

I'm planning on building a media server at some point so I can rip and store all my DVDs on the server, then play them back over a network using PCs set up at each TV in the house. The only thing keeping me from doing it right now is the cost of storage (probably $2K US just for the hard drives alone).

must agree with Jay on the mention of Band of Brothers...
i got through all the episodes about a month ago and i must say i was shocked at how great a show it was... a must see for anyone!
it has the action of Saving Private Ryan with the time to develope and flesh out the characters much better... plus the commentary from the real life veterans at times puts a tear in your eye... hard to imagine what they went through.

plus we got a 92" screen and projector and FINALLY my Marantz digital reciever!!!!
my days of analog are over....

celebrate good times, come on!!

Did you order this, Motti?

I have yet to see it. Keep forgetting to rent and don't want to fork out the cash on the box just yet. Gotta try to remember this one.

I'm working on it, DAYV. The plan @ this point is to get a Mac for video editing and music recording. If the wife still wants a PC, that's fine; we'll put one in the kitchen w/ all her recipes on it.

lol @ gundark... that was gold man...

hey did anyone pick up Schindler's List today?
i picked up the limited edition box set and must say that all though the disc has some pretty average special features... the box it came in is super classy!!!!
it has a page of the List on the back sort of painted on, a coffee table book which although sounds cheesy has some really nice pics in it, the film cell which absolutly rules and the dvd case looks like a hard cover book... i must say i was impressed with it anyway... but then again this is one of my favorite films... so i dunno...

well first off the one i picked up from Wal-Mart was cracked where one of the pegs were inserted... however this happened to most of their stock.. prolly cuz the idiots who were delivering it werent very careful while moving it... so i took it back and got my money back...

Then i went over to Future Shop where my buddy got his and said it was in mint condition... so i did that.
Get home and the book is missing from the set... so i went back yet again and they opened a new one and gave me the book i needed. however I did get to chat it up with a nice looking young lady from the store.... ahh the single life.. how i miss thee
