Those pics are amazing Ady, like usual. Can't wait for the trailer. I gotta say that siren idea sounds pretty good, but it might get like too much in some scenes

Regarding this:

preview 1

I actually like the GOUT one better because the buildings in the background actually look like they're in the background and make Cloud City look like a big city... or maybe it's just the difference i nlighting and more blue in the shadows.  Is there any way to mix the refined backgrounds with the old ones to increase sense of perspective and size of Cloud City?

I said before that a daylight has slight yellow highlights and blue-cyan shadows. GOUT captures that perfectly and gives a weight to the scene.

Is just me or the CGI elements are not blending so well with the already mattes in the previous flyby shot?

I don't see what you are saying at all. Those are the same background buildings from the original matte painting. The original has too much at the building left above Leia's window to have the skylights.

Could you give us a demonstration by adjusting the new version to these principles?

I'm always keen to learn new techniques and it may be useful for other people who read this thread.

He's talking about the colour and texture balancing of the shot not the shape of Leia's building.

The original matte seemed more convincing because of the general merky quality of the whole film (as it was), now that it's cleaned up and colour corrected the matte's broad strokes are a bit more obvious which is sort of what I was trying to say with my earlier post, though I understand and accept the answer Ady gave me on this point.

LOL... I vote ady put Ric Olie into every scene of ESB:R from this point onward.

I have never found myself laughing out loud while reading something on the internets.  Now I have! :)  Good stuff.

Dead thread.

WTF?

oh wait a minute. weren't we just having a laugh at the expense of a PT character? shame on us. i guess PT fans don't get humour unless its to do with stepping in shit or an animal farting. lol

with all the talk of the skies when Luke approaches Bespin i thought it would be best if i posted a screenshot of my version. Again this shot has full video motion clouds so you can't really get a sense of what the finished shot will be like until you see it in motion, plus the x-wing is missing

Love this, so beautiful! Hey Ady do you ever look at the scripts to see if there are any visual descriptions that were never fully implemented into the final movie that you could bring to life? I bring this up because I was looking for quotes about Cloud City and found this in the script:

EXTERIOR: BESPIN SURFACE -- MILLENNIUM FALCON

It is down on the gaseous planet. Huge billowing clouds
form a canyon as the ship banks around them, heading toward
the system's Cloud City.
Suddenly, two twin-pod cloud cars appear and move toward
the Falcon. The cloud cars draw up alongside the starship.

After I read that I remembered that shot above and thought how perfectly that fit the description for the earlier scene.

i haven't got the Star Wars scripts unfortunately but i would be interesting to read the descriptions for the scenes.

Here's a good site for most of them.

I know this might be going back in the thread a bit but always remember Ady that if you're having any problems with the asteroid chase scene just film a couple of big ass spuds....that's what ILM did......lol

Can you imagine a prequel character commentary track for the OT starring Ric Olie and Prequel Yoda?

My head would explode at Yoda's dialogue.

Besides, you could still have the siren bit... <:)

That is a good idea ;)

If Ady likes this idea, I'm currently playing Jedi Outcast and there is a nice Klaxon noise as the Doomgiver falls apart.

I decided to create my own concept which mixes the two versions:

Note that I based it on the original GOUT one.  In this variant, most of the original lighting parameters are kept and the new building Leia is in is now smaller and somewhat more colour-matched, making the entire scene look as if it's higher from the surface of the city and giving back that sense of perspective while keeping some new 2004 SE elements.

I really like that, remember the buildings are also seen in the fly-thru just before this shot.
