I agree with the concept, Jabba and drums.
The idea of Jabba having power before the Empire and something happening to drive him underground, or he was just a more powerful "godfather" type, ala how the Mafia had its heyday in the 40's and 50's and now it's almost just about nostalgia.
I think the drums and more "violent" chanting/cheering work A LOT better... maybe the drums and cheering could get louder as the gates for the creatures are shown and then open... they are about to get eaten alive. I think to go to some of the Roman films in the 50's to get an idea of that "feel" as well as other movies like KING KONG or ZULU to capture that "character is helpless to the heathen masses" feeling those films evoke...
Maybe the crowd could actually start chanting something louder and louder until the creatures show, where the audience then goes silent, creature howls, audience lets out a roar.
And whoever does any of the edits, change the stupid creature sounds please? I know Lucas was going for an alien sound but some of it is way overboard.
