That's a strawman argument, and you know it. No one's saying "close your eyes and listen," only that over-explanation is something to be avoided, and something that positively plagued the PT. The necessary information is sufficiently and effectively communicated in this shot simply from seeing Han & Leia look down at a viewscreen and dialogue about it. Showing flashy holograms is just a change "for the hell of it," and doesn't really even enhance communication at all since the text would be in aurebesh. It's just distracting. It draws attention to a superfluous element and away from the performance of the actors.
I have a hunch that, prior to the issue being raised here, you never watched ESB and thought to yourself, "I wish they'd show a hologram or viewscreen of what Han & Leia are looking at." Am I wrong?
Not so much that you are wrong, but it also wasn't necessary to show the Death Star orbiting a planet in ANH:R either. I thought the structure was just finished and moved away from the planet it was built over just before the film began. But even so it's a change that doesn't bother me. There is nothing wrong with adding something because "You can". That point gets a bum rap, it's when you go insanely crazy with it, which I don't think adding a hologram is. It looks great, it ties the trilogies together, we can still focus on Leia and Han but not be 100 percent distracted by it. I know I keep hearing the PT should match the OT, not the other way around. If that's always the case why put the AOTC death star plans in ANH:R to update them? Continuity eh? But I am glad he did.
I just don't see how adding a hologram to that one scene kills everything. It works in the context of the scene. The falcon has panels & holoprojectors, they even play chess with them. It can still be a hunk of junk and have them.
