The whole design element in the PT is very forgettable

Quite. I do really like some of the ships (those Jedi Starfighters are neat-o!) and a few of the character designs, but on a whole, it's a bit over the top. :p

Good point about having to learn how to fly the ships, too. Reminds me of how guys like Jeremy Clarkson don't like some of the over-electronified cars nowadays because they do so much of the work for you.

I agree!  Especially because I just pictured Jeremy Clarkson in Star Wars.

"So right now I'm in Seinar System's latest offerings, the T-65 X-Wing fighter.  Now you might be saying to yourself, That doesn't look like it deserves an X in it's name, its shaped more like a T if anything.  But watch as I fly along, you press this button and next thing you know, your flying the only x shaped starfighter..... in the universe."

Interesting we even bother debating stuff like this. What purpose does adding a holo display serve? The scene was perfect as it was. They are reading off all the important information to us, as an audience we are learning all we need to know. Adding such a display would really be no benefit, it'd merely be an extra thrown in just for kicks and would serve no other purpose than to distract.

As Adywan said, it is adding just to add. Reminds me of when I was a kid and me and my friends would play with our Lego blocks. We'd build something and it'd look great, but we'd see that we still had unused blocks and would always be over taken by an impulse to use them up. As a result the end product would look silly in comparison to the original, now with all sorts of extra bits and pieces hanging off of it, none of them serving any other purpose. We made these changes simply because we had the means to do so.

When I see things like the holo display, it reminds me a lot of my Lego houses with massive chimney's rocketing up into the sky three times the height of the house itself, and extra bits hanging off all corners of the roof, resulting in a very weighted down and impractical looking Lego home.

That said, your video was rather well done Davnes007. Just because I feel it would be adding too much to the movie, doesn't mean I don't think you did an awesome job with what you did.

The thing i was trying to get across is that in the Ot the designers and set builders did a great job making things look like they didn't come from our time and universe even with the limitations of what stuff could be used, whereas the PT many things look like we actually could have these things on your desktop PC or car etc. I don't think that any of the sets in the OT look dated at all. from a design point of view they work perfectly. you have to remember a few words that start the movie...."a long time ago......" . everything in the OT universe had that lived in look which went against the grain of usual sci-fi. The PT could have been any old or modern day sci-fi using character names from Star Wars. The PT will date a lot worse than the OT ever will.  All the buttons and switches gave the sets character which most of the PT sets sorely lacked.

I remember when i was a kid and i always wanted to redecorate the rooms in my house into sets from the movies. i actually still would love to do something like that now. But there isn't a single set piece in the whole PT (accept fro reused sets from the OT like the stardestroyer bridge or the Tantive IV etc) that i would even want to recreate. i found that kinda sad. The whole design element in the PT is very forgettable

no ships will have touch screens in the Revisited OT. From a design point of view the PT should be changed to fit in with the OT and not the other way around.

Agreed.  The Prequel's design-ethic in general was a disappointment for me in many areas, too....so I can't wait to see any slightly  more "old-school" OT moments.

And Thursday has come round again, yay!  Looking forward to the latest preview shot.  :)

As someone who uses my ipod touch everyday, I think the PT starfighters seem a lot easier to use. I wouldn't know where to start with the Falcon, the PT ships probably have a step by step set-up wizard and nifty one-touch autopilot. :)

and there is the problem. wasn't Anakin supposed to be a great pilot but if everything is so easy to pilot then that means anyone could pilot a starship. the OT ships all looked like you would have to actually learn how to fly them and not rely on a computer and idiot proof interface to do all the work for you.

But that's just it. It's a freighter. Wouldn't a freighter be designed so they could get any idiot to pilot it and pay them minimum wage? Wouldn't, in an age where intergalactic travel is a click away, automation be used as much as possible to make things more efficient and cost effective? not need as many workers and pilots?  have cute and intelligent astromech droids when practical AI could just be built into the ship? Wouldn't cloning be more expensive than mass creation of droids? Wouldn't an empire, which can rape the galaxy of it's riches, have ships and costumes designed with reckless extravagance rather than bar bones minimalism? does the emperor have some better motivation for being even than just ya know, cuz he's evil? Shouldn't he have a big plasma tv and staff waiting on him hand and foot with a droid to scratch his ass?Do the laws of economics even apply in the Star Wars universe?

But that's not a serious argument. Star Wars is fantasy, not sci-fi for this reason. It's fantasy set in space. Therefore it need not make sense and the ship designs in the OT are fine :).

Great stuff once again Adywan!

However, I'm so conflicted.....  The city itself looks terrific, and definately an improvement compared to the SE (and GOUT) versions.  But while the clouds look great too (and I'm sure will have a nice 'motion' to them), I really liked seeing the long 'stem' in this shot previously (which was a really great design element of the floating city), which has now been obscured by some of the new cloud pattern.  I also liked the overall composition of the previous original shots because of the 'foreground' cloud bank on the left of the frame, which gave some real depth to the scene.

I sure love the fact that the 'cloud-car' coming towards us is re-instated, as I really missed the sound of it's 'engine roar' getting louder in this shot....and I personally detested that SE 'refinery' addition in it's place.

I preferred the juxtaposition of Luke's X-wing receding away in the previous shot to this one, then the 'cloud-car' coming towards us.  So I'm very glad it's back, and  I guess we now have the EXTRA juxtaposition that comes in the shot immediately after this now, as the SE 'city fly-through' starts with a 'cloud-car' receding away again.  This whole sequence of shots will look excellent together.

Yeah. A slight movement/variation (turbulance noise or whatever) will give more life/.

oh there's a lot of movement in that shot. i have used video footage of flying through clouds. No more artificial 2d movement like in the SE

the only thing is that this new shot is in danger of being omitted from the finished movie. I hated the gas refinery they added for the SE and always preferred the cloud car fly-by. now the problem i'm having is that i am having to use the cloud car from the GOUT and, as we all know, the quality of that sucks ass big time. even with loads of filters applied it looks crap. i can't reproduce this with a model so i desperately need someone who can recreate the pod car using CG. i did start a thread to try and ask someone from the SCI-FI3D site but the forums have moved over to TFN and my thread was deleted almost as soon as it was posted. I guess they don't like me messing with Lucas' work over there.

That is the saddest, lamest crap I've heard in a long time. And I've been dealing with a lot of crap lately.

Can your CG guy from Episode IV help you out with this?

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

i have tried to contact him a couple of times lately but i haven't heard anything back from him. I'm just hoping he is using the same email address. They have a couple of great CG models over at SCI-FI3D of the pod cars too. unfortunately the best one hasn't got any pilots in it.
