I personallty think the Sail Barge explotion is fine. For me its one of the only speical effects in the whole movie I actully like.

After Effects would have been better to use, but I'm still a beginner with that.
I was trying to evoke this famous painting of the Titanic :
and mix it with the snapping in half we now know that happened.
To get it to work would require more model shots (the barge seems to be the least photographed model in the Star Wars universe screengrabs aren't much help and the physical set (which was beautiful is always photographed cluttered up by other people, models and the like).
It needs to tip back into the pit (with a nice groaning noise) with the nose pointing up and then snap in the middle and then explode.
It would be nice to see it fall from a different angle (like the truck flip in The Dark Knight).
I don't think it's doable with stills despite Davnes' always watchable efforts.
I agree that it looks...'odd'. As far as the 'nose pointing up...' goes, the Barge would need to actually dig down into the sand for the rest to tip up, which would look...'odd'.
You didn't even comment about the 'bonus' footage at the end of the video ;)

Davnes007 the corvette sticking it to the man was great to be honest I never got to it on the first viewing I've been in a bit of a hurry today.
I'm sorry those who love it but the Sail barge explosion (in fact most of the model work on that sequence) is one of the things I hate the most about Jedi.
The full sized set they built was beautiful but the models just look like models (the OUT Sandcrawler model was more convincing to me) and the explosion was just awful with no weight or sense of scale at all.
Those production paintings really felt like a space opera version of a pirate film.
The other thing that always bugged me was that the pit of Carkoon was hardly a pit at all, more of a dent.
I'd love to see the sequence reworked.

Umm...but, didn't they actually blow-up the actual set/barge...it wasn't a model (correct me if I'm wrong).

When you see the deck burning that's real (a controlled fire on the physical set) but the explosion is very much a model.

I think its really awesome to completely remove jabba, The scene is just filler. He says the same thing greedo says and he looks and sounds horrible. It makes things easier just to remove him.

I agree. For me, the Jabba scene is redundant. It also lessens the threat Jabba poses to Han.
But for those who want to keep it in, why doesn't someone just cut away from the part when he steps on the tail and show Chewie again? Then go back to Han/Jabba as Han circles back around to front. You could delay the dialogue so the new shot isnt so quick.
And then just come up with new dialogue and have Jabba say something else.
The scene makes jabba look like a nice guy. Return Of The Jedi OUT version he is a bad vicious gangster. Cut that mofo. What am I saying Adywan already did so blamo. I dont care if any of yall keep him I am only watching the holey grail of fan edits and that is ANHR.

MAAAYBE, if my suggestion for Jabba the Hutt as a separatist leader was considered, there could be a few token battle droids in jabbas palace as security? could be just a nice visual link to the earlier episodes, almost a reminder that this is a culmination of the six film saga.

I had always wondered what people meant by the "slugs," but never looked it up. I just cranked up the brightness on my monitor (from 40 to 100) and there it is! Pretty weird! Have they always been there in every version released? And are they just in ROTJ?
P.S. The reason for you editing your post made me smirk. :)
Yep, the slug has always been there. When viewed in a theater, it's almost invisible (just like the mattes around tie fighter, etc.), but the contrast with home video is different, and makes that stuff painfully evident.

IIRC, the reason for the slugs is that yellow lights were mounted on the sides of Palpy's hood that shone onto his eyes, thus making them "glow." Unfortunately, the lights themselves (clipped onto the hood fabric) were visible in the footage, so ILM rather crudely painted them out, thus producing the black globules often referred as "the Emperor's slugs."

Here's the real reason, the one too terrible to consider.
The slugs ARE the Darkside. I bet Vader had some under his cape.
Think about it. It all makes perfect sense.

Adywan, when you get to ROTJ, could you do anything about this scene?
At the end of the fight, Vader just falls down and grabs on to the railing for no apparent reason. Could you perhaps CGI in Luke's leg kicking him down or something?
Adywan, another thing that always bugged me was this:
In this shot it looks like Luke's saber hits Vader's hand.
Is there some way you could fix this?
