Yes - you need to buy a Macrovision removal device (aka a video stabilizer) to connect up between your VCR and DVD recorder.

I've imported them into final cut pro using log and capture footage as one would with a regular dv camera, but just wondered if anyone knew a better way.

What do you mean by "better"?
