The explosion is caused by the barge gun firing at the deck at close range so predicting the effect would require a full knowledge of how the gun worked and what was where in a craft we don't know about, it was certainly a heavy ship (not as heavy as the Titanic by any means) but it could sink that way if we wanted it to.
The explosion in the film as it stands is very boring, not very convincing and doesn't carry over the visual metaphor of it being a sailing ship in a sea of sand.
The sequence was meant to evoke pirate movies but for once George was a little too subtle with his evocation.
