Well this little continuity got an EU patch when they showed characters could learn to hide themselves in the force. Like turning a light switch on or off,lol.
Not so sure this was really a problem to begin with as nitpickers overly analyze these films. They are movies and meant to be enjoyed not disected. The problem of the EU is trying to overly explain things Lucas never touched upon in his movies or left intentionally vague.
I mean you could looks for the retcon patches even in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Since the story was being made up on the fly it is not entirely seamless. Vader originally was not Luke's father and Leia not his sister. Now it is just accepted as a given or that was the story lucas originally set out to tell.
Those who were born in the Seventies and remember seeing a film simply called Star Wars in 1977 know better though.
