 For me, the question is: should Anakin kill *anyone* in AOTC? We need to like him (he is the hero after all...or one of them) in AOTC and this makes his fall in ROTS tragic.

I think we can sympathize with his killing after they tortured an beat his mother. I think the key is to make his character likable to begin with. The Phantom Editor had the right idea there, cut out much of his whininess and protest and make Obi-Wan more stern and overbearing and suddenly are sympathy is shifted from Obi-Wan to Anakin. I think the "Attack of the Phantom" commentary is pretty much a mandatory listen.
