If you need help getting code free PAL DVD stuff, i could rip some trailers from one DVD into a small iso and put it up to rapidshare...

but as stated above it seems to be a true problem that NTSC PS3 do not playing PAL stuff...

I wonder to hear that the US PS3 does not playing PAL. The european PS3 plays NTSC fine, the only problems are the region coded DVDs, but for that I just do an 1:1 otr a downshrink to DVD5 for my private usage from my own DVDs without region coding...

Have you ever tried some Region codefree PAL disc, if its just the region coding prob?

I have not,but that is a good idea,I will have to try that.

I think I've tried that (and with THE ISLAND, being that it is region-0) and nope, no play due to PAL video.  I will have to look into the European and Asian PS3 thing though.  I have one of the earlier 60gb machines (and replaced the hard drive with a Seagate 250gb) and other than the PAL and region code issue it works fantastic.  I guess if I can find one cheap enough (@ $250) maybe it would be worth getting.

So Mr. Brown (just to confirm), you are saying that the European PS3s will play both NTSC and PAL dvds (provided of course that there is no region coding)?  DVD Decrypter will strip the region coding, so if what you are saying is true, then I can start watching my PAL dvds in 1080i via HDMI!

BTW, Mr. Brown, where would be the least expensive place to go on the internet to purchase a European (or Asian) PS3?  I can do a hunt on my own, but if you already have some good ideas as to where to start that would be great!

I don't know where to buy Asian PS3's. I just own a 60 GB PS3 bought in Germany at a normal Store. I am not that online shopper regarding Multi Media products. Take a look at Amazon.de or Amazon.co.uk for the european PS3s, but maybe there cheaper stores.

Play.com is an UK store also offering PS3s, they seem to be somebit cheaper than Amazon.co.uk

Regarding NTSC and PAL:

As announced above I own the normal German PS3, and I had never problems playing NTSC DVDs. I own some region Free NTSC Discs from across the world, and some Region 2 DVDs from Japan, and everytime I insert one, it plays fine. The only Problem is the Region Code, but the PS3 never made trouble with burned DVD Movies.

I have no HD TV, so I just use the SD out, but I will ask a friend of mine, if she ever used one of her Japan DVDs. She uses a HD TV with HDMI. But I would wonder, if this would make trouble using different outplugs...

Regarding Region Coding:

I own one PS3 game from USA: John Woo presents Stranglehold, and it works fine.

Bottom line: BluRays with Region Coding for USA won't work. And as long as I have none BluRay burner, I can't test if burned BD Movies work.

Most Asian DVDs are NTSC, so it would be a more win using an european PS3 for playing PAL DVDs, because PAL movies should mostly be RC 2.

I don't know if there is a difference between Asian (Hong Kong etc.) and japanese PS3, because of the difference DVD region coding...

I don't know if it coun't for being Special Content, but in Hong Kong the new John Woo Movie "Red Cliff" is avaible on DVDs, BDs and VCDs (*lol*).

It has two parts, each with a runtime about 140 minutes. Each parts is about 40$ on BluRay (region free, english subtitles) or 25$ on DVD (Region 3, english subtitles). It is announced that the Movies will be seen worldwide in cinema cut-together in one ~140 minute movie...

And today arrived my Thai Disc of Ong-Bak 2, which was shown 2008 in thailand in cinemas. It is not out yet elswhere, but the thai DVD comes without ANY subtitles. So I have to find some Fansubs which are so well done, to get them onto an safety copy together with the movie from the thai disc.

Edit2: Ong Bak 2 is announced to be released with english subtitling soon. So.. no hurry... :) well.. for my 10 Euro I paid for the thai DVD I know could check if the movie has intersting fight scenes.. except I find some PAL subs soon ^^

Ah. If someone know the russian movie "Night Watch" (Nochnoi Dozor) there is an dire..

EDIT1: I allready mentioned the Night Watch DC :D

UPDATE (04-09-09):

A friend of mine watched Region Free NTSC DVDs on her german Playstation 3 on her Full HD Television without any problems. The upscaling was great in her opinion.

So, for the records:

It is certain, that the german PlayStation 3 plays PAL and NTSC without any problems. So the european PS3 should do it. (I don't think their are differences between the GE and other EU PS3s :) )

Only the region code is something disturbing :) (I own about 100 DVDs with region coding not 2 nor 0)

BTW, DARK JEDI:

I've probably already asked this, and I have the link to M0ther's PAL TO NTSC thread, but what programs do you use to make the conversion?  Do you simply follow his steps or do you use something that is a little less complicated?

You know, wouldn't it be nice if there was a program that all you had to do was click on the option "NTSC to PAL" or "PAL to NTSC" and click START and done?

I dont want this to come off as pompous or anything like that at all but anything that seems too good/easy to do the first time youre trying it, means that you are almost guarantee'ing subpar results. I think I know alittle bit but I am far from being the best here at encoding and Im still learning new and better ways to do encodes. One click solutions are not the solution. Best thing to do is take your time, trial and error, and getting to recognize patterns with media youre dealing with. While every encode is different, alot of them follow similiar patterns that after time you should be able to recognize and that will cut down the time that you will have to put into it.

No I do not copy anyone else's methods to the "T" I use a bunch of different programs and methods depending on what I am working on and trying to achieve,I like doing PAL2NTSC conversions, pretty much movie only though,do not have the patience to do the whole DVD,and I do alot of anamorphic conversions of DVD's not in 16:9,but if you really want t 1 click solution, which really does not do all that bad(but still not good enough for my tastes though LOL) ConvertXtoDVD is a pretty nice app. and it just keeps getting better with every update, can even add menu's.

Hell right now I am converting the Region 4 DVD's of House III and House IV to NTSC,these 2 were actually in 16:9 widescreen and DD 5.1,all we got was fullscreen crap.
But at least we got House and House 2 in widdescreen.

Dark Jedi, I'd like to apologise for being rude in my previous posting here. It was uncalled for.

So do you accumulate random DVD's and cull the content on them to make your own discs? Sounds interesting to me and would be handy at times.

What are the names of those programs, by the way.  <:)

Also, is there a way to save and re-use menus?  I have the BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW Anchor Bay UK release (which is non-anamorphic and looks like garbage on my 65" HDTV) and a Spanish release, which, while non-anamorphic, it is derived from the anamorphic print that MGM made but never released (remember when MIDNIGHT MOVIES were still being made?  Apparently GALAXY OF TERROR and BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW were on the list, but MGM went bankrupt before they were produced) and looks excellent.

The point being that I love the extras and the menu for the Anchor Bay release, I just want to replace the Anchor Bay video file with the one from the Spanish dvd, which looks a hell of a lot better.  What makes this worse is that on one of the documentaries, clips of BOSC were used that are 16:9 ANAMORPHIC AND LOOK EXCELLENT!  Which means Anchor Bay UK had access to the 16:9 anamorphic print, but didn't put it on the dvd!!!!

Not really "random" DVD's,I just know what I like, and if I see onther region has something I like I order it and convert so my friends and family can watch and enjoy them to,not all my friends and family have OPPO players.

For example,my family likes the House movies, but it appears all we got(here in the US) is part 1 & 2,and at least they are in 16:9 widescreen, but we don't have parts 3 & 4,so I got the Australian region 4 16:9 widescreen versions with DD 5.1 sond and converted to NTSC,now everyone is happy.

My Dad,Father In-Law and I really LOVE the Death Wish movies, but all we got were fullscreen versions of all but the first one, well the Australian region 4 DVD Boxset called The Vigilante Collection has ALL 5 movies in 16:9 widescreen and all uncut,so now I am making these ALL into NTSC DVD's.

and don't worry about that comment,I already responded to that along time ago,it is already forgotten LOL
