Why do the fighters go in with the Falcon in the first place?
One obvious answer is the more ships that go in the more chances they have of success, in that case why ram or bam the reactor with the Falcon with a larger crew than the fighters?
The next obvious answer is to protect the Falcon on it way in but that doesn't hold up because the Imperial fighters are traveling in the same direction as the Rebels (all the Rebel guns are pointing the wrong way).
If they are there to protect the Falcon the Rebels should split up and creep up behind the Imperials and pick them off or wait until the Imperials are in the tube and come in after them.
The best option I can think of (because we all want fighters in that maze with the Falcon) is that the Falcon is critically damaged in the bump that takes out the communications disk (as in my earlier post), it's going to blow up anyway so Lando sends Wedge out and rams the reactor, getting the best use of a failing resource.
You bring up a problem I've always had with the sequence. Why do "all" the fighters (Lando calls for all of them, of which there are apparently FIVE LEFT) need to enter the DS if Lando is going to send them all back to the surface a few seconds later (which is why I moved the Executor sequence inbetween, so Lando waits a bit before sending them back, like he's almost to the reactor and is sending them away). Six TIEs enter in after them, one exploding against the wall and three following everyone else out. Then those two TIEs shoot at the Falcon a grand total of ONCE, and the Falcon never uses its cannons to shoot them off (unless the cannons are damaged, as you suggest).
Since we don't have shots of Billy Dee saying how the Falcon is too damaged to make the shot, we have to think of other alternatives. Like maybe not having the other Rebel ships go with Lando. But then you have to wonder what would happen if the Falcon didn't make it. More runs at the reactor? Too much like ANH.
I really don't know.
ALSO: it'd be awesome if we could find Billy Dee saying "sorry" sincerely or something apologetic as he's headed towards the reactor during my silent part. Any ideas?
