I was watching AOTC again in almost 5 years... ugh! — Page 2

Seriously.  The Death Star didn't need to be in either Episodes 2 or 3.

Yeah. The second death star took about 4 years to build and the first one took 20? The Death Star was supposed to be the cutting edge in new tech, not something worked out 20 years before. Having the death star appear in ROTS and Tarkin appear with Vader was having the end of the prequels match the beginning of the OT too much. Same goes for having R2 and 3PO being on the Tantive IV with Captain Antilles at the end. Does nothing change or develop in 20 years? It's like the small galaxy thing of having Yoda be best buddies with Chewbacca and C3P0 be built by Annie. It's dumb and artificial and unimaginative.

He had substantial creative support for writing ANH, and the superb acting in that film is largely because of Alec Guiness' seasoned talent, and the other actors improvising for themselves. It's nothing to do with Lucas being a good director. He was bad. Really bad. On all accounts during production, the guy was sorely lacking in the social skills department. "Faster and more intense, CO."

ESB was neither written nor directed by Lucas. Kasdan wrote the script, and Kershner directed. Lucas was on the other side of the globe during most of the production.

And American Graffiti I don't see as being anything to write home about, and THX-1138 I've only watched clips of (didn't interest me). That's preferance, though. I'm trying to bring around the idea that the more control Lucas has over a Star Wars film, the more it's panned by critics and fans.

I respect  your choices on what you like and don't like by Lucas, but I just don't think he was a hack in the 70's.  As I said, I think he was well past his prime by the time he filmed TPM, and he lost that edge that he had before he was a billionaire.

I just think there are 2 Lucas's, pre-SW1977 and post-SW1977, and the pre-1977 could have had a nice career as a director if he wasn't swallowed up by SW-mania.  Coppola even said, "The success of Star Wars robbed Hollywood of a great director."

As for comparing sequels to their originals, I could say the same thing about Lethal Weapon IV compared to Lethal Weapon, is that the same director?  Richard Donnor directed Superman I, Lethal Weapon, and many great films, and then I see Lethal Weapon IV, and that was an utter piece of shit, that sorta ruined the series to me, but again, I think Donnor was well past his prime by 1998, and lost that edge that happens to most directors.  Only guys like Scorcese and Spielberg have been consistent in their movies their whole career.

Easily the worst of the prequels.

I almost fell asleep in the theatre!  Not only is AOTC the worst film of the prequels, but it is one of my most hated films EVER and I refuse to watch it ever again because I can't get through the damn thing.  Luca$ had so much potential with that chapter and he blew it...BIG TIME.

Watching it again now. Having fun laughing at it. The worst thing about the romance is that Annie and Padme come off utterly moronic, like they haven't a brain cell between them.

Another reflection on the film: It's terribly bland. It's the blandest of the prequels.

Have you seen it with the Rifftrax commentary? Definitely worth paying for the mp3. Too me, Ep. 2 really isn't funny enough on its own to laugh at. It is so far beyond awful, I find my self in a fetal possition in the corner of the room sobbing at the mere mention of the name of that film. The rifftrax bit is like having someone hold my hand and whisper in my ear that everything is going to be okay, it is just a poorly made commedy somewhat based off of Star Wars and that it is okay to laugh at it. Those rifftrax are great coping tools. Eventually they will have one for all six movies (SEs of course) and the HS.
