I agree the romance scenes are painful, and don't work overall.

But the scene in the field, with the waterfalls ("I'd be much to frightened to tease a senator") are the only romance scenes I think work. For a brief moment I buy that thesetwo young people are falling for each other. I also think it's the only time in either movie Hayden and Portman have real chemistry going on.
