There are people on here in or graduated from film school but there are also people who are self taught and people who will never make a film but contribute ideas without which nothing would get made.

So doing this sort of thing is never a waste of time (and even if it was I can think of worse ways of wasting time) as it gets people to stretch their skills which they may (or may not) take to other things.

And helping to make Star Wars work better rather than just sitting back moaning about it (to whatever degree we do) has got to be a positive thing.
