Beatles Remastered Albums Due in September

Link to news.  Thoughts?  Supposedly the original '80s transfers are of mediocre quality.  I'm mostly interested to see if this will include the alternate (or in some cases closer to the original intent) takes of songs based on some of the original mixes.

I expect they will be the same versions originally released - i.e, not alternate takes.  The theatrical versions, if you will.

But hold on... a beatles video game?  WTF?

hmm, some sort of Zombie survival game maybe? - that'd be fitting...

I'M SURE IT'S A GUITAR HEROES-LIKE GAME.

Ah yeah, that's probably right actually - following them as they try to get a record deal, work up the charts, etc.

It's "Rock Band: The Beatles."  Literally, that's what it is.  The Rock Band game, with Beatles songs and plastic instruments that look like their favorite models.  But that is neither here nor there.

I think its neat that they're not only releasing them all in stereo, but releasing a package with all of the mono albums in mono, just in case you're a purist.

So here's what it is, exactly:

- Remastered stereo for all albums, released individually, plus the US Magical Mystery Tour, plus Past Masters 1 & 2Help! and Rubber Soul will be the late-80s remixes here.
- Boxed set of the above.
- Boxed set of all the mono mixes (will not include Abbey Road or Let it Be, which didn't have mono mixes.  It'll be interesting to see if they release Yellow Submarine with the unreleased mono mix or the "official" mono mix that's just a fold-down of the stereo.) - the mono versions of Help! and Rubber Soul will also include (on the same disc) the original 60s stereo mixes.  This boxed set will also include a Past Masters-style collection of all the non-album tracks that were mixed in mono.

My only complaint is that it seems that in order to have the complete collection the way I want it, I'd need to get the mono box set, plus buy Abbey Road, Let it Be and Past Masters 1 & 2 separately (assuming the stereo-only tracks of PM aren't included in the mono set).

I'm interested to see if these sound any better than the Dr. Ebbetts bootlegs I have, which sound absolutely perfect.  Modern remasters tend to be, for lack of a better word, terrible (with the notable exception of much of the Rolling Stones' remasters, but not all of them), so we'll have to see how this set turns out.

I'm also curious if Let it Be... Naked will be included in place of the original version.  I sure as hell hope not.

And to anyone who's never heard he mono mixes of Help! through The Beatles (White album), you need to.  They're far, far, far superior to the stereo mixes, especially Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and the White album.  (Please Please Me through Beatles for Sale were released in mono on CD in the 80s, so the stereo versions of those will be the new ones.)

And yeah, the new game is a Beatles Rock Band game.

Question though: what's the differences on the White Album?  I have the others in mono on vinyl.

I heard the albums were going to be remixed like The Yellow Submarine Songtrack released in 1999 or the recent Genesis' box sets. If so, that'll be a big improvement. A few years ago, the USA (Capitol) versions of the albums were re-released and sold in sets, but I don't know of many people interested in those, lol.

So more money for Michael Jackson then huh?

Here's hoping they include Beatles wigs.

They're not going to be remixed, just remastered (except Help! and Rubber Soul, which were already remixed in the late eighties - but the original mixes will be finally officially available on CD).

Which is a good thing - there's absolutely nothing wrong with the way the albums were mixed originally.  The CD masters just sounded terrible.  Hopefully they won't ruin these as well (not holding much hope out for that, though).

I stopped buying CD's a while ago (hello itunes), but I might make an exception for this set.  Besides, my vinyl Revolver and Sgt. Peppers are about worn out.

I read in I think it was USA Today about these.  I think the people doing the remastering work will take good care of these albums.  In the article it has a quote from one of the main guys working on it and he said that the only thing they are using in processing the songs is a slight use of limiting to bring them up to a slightly higher volume because a lot of the tapes they worked with were noticeably too quiet.  He said they are aware of how people see that kind of stuff on remasters but they were very careful about how doing it affects dynamics and they wanted to preserve the original dynamics of the sound.

So yeah...here's to hoping we get the definitive copies of these classics.

Uh-oh ... while I know that was meant to be reassuring, it had the exact opposite effect on me ... here's hoping we don't have a too-loud remaster that clips the peaks of the waveforms like all of The Who's remasters ...

I think I would have liked a re-mix of the first two albums in Stereo.  George Martin hates these stereo mixes. He personally re-mixed the songs from "Please Please Me" & "With The Beatles" when they had shown up again on the 1976 compilation album "Rock and Roll Music".  The vocals need to be more center, and that added echo on the non lead vocal side has got to be reduced.

That's why I listen to the mono mixes - IMO all of which are superior to any stereo mix (except perhaps "I Am The Walrus).
