The publicity stills and the interviews are very cool, and the way the Enterprise takes off at movie start is awesome to,but I have never been a fan of the annoying warnings faneditors put on there DVD's,because quit frankly they are easily stripped and really do nothing, people are going to do whatever they want with the video anyways(I should know,ALOT of my previous works have been and still are being sold),just like we do,but your own little FF presentation is OK,it is like your signature.

Just got FEDS to and did not like the warning on that either,so I will strip it to LOL,FE started all that BS and now it seems everyone thinks it has to be on there.

Hell the official retail versions have arnings up the ass and we don't seem to listen to those do we?\

but hey that is just me,FF keep an eye on your PM's,you will be gettting one shortly.

Thank for the comment.  I'll leave everything but my FF logo off my next edit project.

Ok. Here's another one.

During the walk to V'Ger near the end of the movie, after Ilia points and says "V'Ger!" we cut to a shot showing Decker, Spock, Kirk and Bones. In the theatrical cut, all we see are them and a little thunder noise being heard in the background. The Director's Edition adds two blue lightning effects to this shot.

You can see both lightning bolts absent on the 2nd DVD "Additional & Deleted Scenes" under "Wing Walk".

I don't blame you for missing this one at all. Even though the sound effects were changed in the Director's Edition to sound more dramatic, the original sound syncs up with the new lightning effects perfectly!

I don't know about that.  The warning stuff may be useless from a fan-edit perspective, but it's a necessary step to thwart the lazy bootleggers who download stuff and burn stacks of discs to sell at conventions.  They're not paying attention to the details, they're just interested in making money, which is what puts the fan editing community in jeopardy in the first place.  Having the warning on there at least educates the customer to what they're watching, if not thwarting the bootlegger.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

yes it really works my ass,do WE listen to all the warnings on the retail DVD's?

NO we still edit them and share them,so in MY opinion they are annoying and useless, some editors make some very long ones and some are just plain stupid.

but back on topic,if anyone wants to debate this I will gladly go some rounds via PM

FF,

One more suggestion while you're in "remaster" mode - on the Chapter Selection menu, put an asterisk * next to any chapter names that have SLV footage in them relative to the theatrical cut.

Side thought for anyone interested - disc and case art would be nice.

Additionally, could you put a pause function on the audio? That would be lovely if possible.

And I'm totally for disc and case art, but I can't do it because I'm weak.

I can whip up some disc/case art.  Not tonight, but tomorrow I should be able to do it.

Just a quick note to people who have problems with this DVD because it's NTSC: You can also use IfoEdit to change the settings from NTSC to PAL. This won't make the DVD PAL, but it will make your DVD-Player/TV-Set believe that it is.

One advantage to the warning screens is they protect the fan editor, at least in theory, by showing that he did not create the fan edit in order to make money off of it.

Still I disagree LOL,this will protect editors from no law suit if one comes,a little warning at the begining of a movie shared on the web is no protection at all from the Suits, did the warnings on the original DVD where it says in whole or in part scare you into not editing it?

once again sorry FF for getting sidetracked, this whole issue for me is just really funny.

This doesn't usually work for most dvd players. It can trick some players into reading the discs, but the results are often choppy video, if it works at all. It may be worth a try, but from what I've read about this in the past, it usually leads to disappointment, so don't try this expecting it to be a guaranteed fix.

I do agree that the warning is pretty much useless. I can understand the reasons why the faneditor may think that this could protect them, but in reality, I don't see how it would. While its true that there are those who profit off these fanedits on Ebay, the smart ones will just remove the warnings before making the copies, and even if they don't, they still make their money regardless. And I'm pretty sure that a small disclaimer will offer no protection against the lawyers should it ever end up going that far. Good intentions and lack of desire to profit doesn't seem to hold much weight when you're up against the big guys. I don't mind a custom logo, like Adywan had in his ANH:Revisited DVD, but a full paragraph of legal apologies and warnings are just a bother. Just my opinion.

If you are adding legalese, could you put using the Star Trek font (as used in the logo for the movie). At the very least, you might put some music from the soundtrack behind it as it scrolls.

I still disagree.  FF, I suggest continuing to use the warning.  Fair use laws are fairly nebulous.  But one of the four things that courts look at when deciding is it's use for commercial gain.  If you place the warning, you'll be less likely a target than fan editors who don't.  It's not any sort of a guarantee against prosecution.  But it might be one step in your defense's job of swaying a jury.  And if lawsuits are ever brought against fan editors, I think it's safe to say they will target the biggest offenders first and those actually doing it for profit.  Having a warning in the front will at least support your argument that you're not doing this for any gain.  Actually, I'd suggest a disclaimer saying that you did this only for educational purposes (your own), which is another factor that the courts decided is allowed in fair use.

Like I said, it's not a get out of jail free card.  It may not help you at all.  But it could be a factor that helps your defense, if it ever comes to that.   And even if some viewers find it annoying, it's really only a couple seconds of their time.  No real harm in keeping it in.

Just my 2 cents.

I still find your statement very amusing, the warnings are on the retail DVD's for "us" not to do what we do,but you do it anyways, will this help in court? very doubtful,so you place a warning on something that you were already warned about, and this will "help" sway the jury, again this is very very funny shit, like I said,I really find these warnings as very very annoying, some more so than others, but they are easily taken OFF.

Now all that said,I do like the editors own little signature thing, these are cool idea's as long as they don't get overboard in length.

Noone is trying to tell FF what to do here,we are just stating our beliefs on these dumb ass, useless warnings, and for the record I have never and will never use them.

Then take them off yourself if they bug you so much.  I happen to agree with Taolar - it's a gray area, to be sure, but it's a legal ass-covering.  And while you may be covering your ass with your hand as opposed to a bulletproof shield of immunity, it's still better than leaving your ass out in the open.

Now let's just keep this on topic to FF's great upcoming project release.

*and for the record I have ALOT of respect for Taolar and FF for all there talents and edits, but you sir,not so much(have you done anything).

to me it looks like the source is already 16:9,he just encoded it 4:3,so a pretty easy fix.

because the HD source"should" already have been 16:9,and the DVD DVD is 16:9 also.

Author

well... even if the sources AREN'T 16:9, these could (should) be encoded to anamophic 720x480 for the DVD, right?  i mean... there just isn't any reason NOT to do it that way (other than possible bitrate bloat, but you WANT that, LOL).

relax,I am pretty certain this new release WILL be anamorphic, just give FF some time,we have been communicating through PM's the past couple days and this is his plan,he will get it done and all will be happy.
