Is it just me or does the color on the 2004 dvd's actually look better than the original in this instance. I am referring to the images from Bingowings above.

haha, that one is pretty cool.
It's amazing how 9 hours can fly by when you're editing.
The Forest Moon of Endor now has a planet to orbit!
It's a bit rough around the edges, but I think it gets the idea across. :) Enjoy.

I like it!
I didnt like the planet moving when the shuttle is going down.
That proves how ROTJ is poor.
Good job!

hey those planet clips are really cool,
found this after watching it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEzXbd80TjM&NR=1
its a walkthrough of a computer game evel based on the endor bunker. i wonder if there are any games (or modded content for games) that could be put together to convincingly make a more interesting assault on the bunker?
Definitely a good proof-of-concept, Davnes. Rough, yes, but it proves it can work without looking like it's unnecessary or "there because we could do it."

As you can see, there's no stripe in the long shot. Nor is there one on Vader's shuttle on his approach:
"Ah," but you say, "Vader's shuttle isn't the Emperor's therefore no stripe!"
Then why are there two stripes on Vader's when he lands?!
First, sorry about all the pictures.
The stripes are the same in function (to the filmmakers and the audience) as the stripes on the X-wings. They are a design feature that was thought up to distinguish one shuttle from the other. Especially in the live shots where the actual shuttle set was used for at least three and maybe four different shuttles.
Palpatine's shuttle had one stripe perhaps to designate it as the Star Wars equivelent of Air Force One. Vader has two stripes and others don't have anyway. They were likely just stuck onto the prop and removed as needed. The nose of the shuttle prop also has a colored piece that was removed as well.
And then when filming began, the concept was scrapped. So the models and the sets don't match the matte paintings.
One stripe:
Note also the stripe on the nose of the shuttle that sort of matches the matte painting:
Here is Vader's shuttle with two stripes:
But it doesn't explain this which has one stripe:
And the Tyderium set-piece was repainted to make the shuttle the rebels were flying a bit more grungy and closer to the rebel's style.
So maybe the set designers, propmakers and painters had a plan for the stripes, but it doesn't show in the final product.
I played around with this picture for about 10 to 20 minutes and I was able to just about remove the sabers and their gigantic fat blurs so then I made the sabers you see from scratch how do you like. I know I only edited a picture but doesnt it work about the same way with video.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Well, that looks about right.
Sluggo I think colour stripe should return, it would be the easiest way to make the shuttles look different from each other (though I think what with Palpatine replacing the blue guard with the red, the stripe should be red to reflect this colour scheme).
I've never heard of this factoid before and I suppose I was hypnotised into not noticing the matte missmatch so thanks for pointing it out.
Now I have an whole new Doh! moment to notice when watch Jedi ;-)

"May I suggest a new strategy...Artoo let the humans win" :
I was talking about the ROTJ images you posted. The hanger looks crisp and better. I always feel we talk about what the 2004 DVD's did wrong, but in this case to me the did some good.
I think you mean the ones doubleofive posted which explains my confusion.
The picture is more crisp in the 2004 DVD because it had an extensive restoration done on it and was digitally remastered specifically for the DVD format but the colour has some of (but not quite as bad) the tinting that made weird all the SE DVD sets and then there is Vader's pink sabre (the most pink in ROTJ) and all the sound problems.
If the OUT had been restored to the same degree and remastered and presented well (instead of being essentially a LD transfer) I imagine it wouldn't have got the GOUT moniker.
Even then it should have been in the 2004 box set and the SE discs should have been treated with more care and given a proper sound mix but then if we had that I imagine that some of the creative people on here wouldn't have hung around for so long and newer people like myself wouldn't have joined on.
So George when he does something wrong still does some good, from a certain point of view.
Speaking of 'A Certain Point of View', here's a little that idea that popped into my head when thinking about other places to insert Endor Prime. Here's a simple storyboard:
And, here's a little something I threw together for fun...

Awesome stuff on the shuttle Sluggo! I believe that the stripes should be brought into alignment in RotJR. I'll post some mockups of my attempts to fix it.
Of course, we don't need to worry about Tyderium since it will more than likely be replaced by a whole new shuttle type.

Davnes you are definatly on a roll at the moment lovely stuff.
I still think a blue/green ringed gas giant like Uranus or Neptune would be a better contrast with Yavin (and less like Saturn which is what usually springs to mind when people think of ringed planets) but that's just my personal preference.
Keep up the good work.

Davenes, I'm loving your Endor Prime shots, especially the fleet arriving shot. The DS explosion is a little large and looks like it should have cracked the moon in half, but I suppose that's the point! LOL
Back to the stripes, I also noticed that Tydyrium has two stripes as it flies overhead towards the Executor. They tried, they really did. OK, maybe its just one.

Would it be interesting to take some shots from either ARMAGEDDON or DEEP IMPACT and blue screen them in? I'm thinking in regards to showing the characters on Endor looking up and the sky FX (with the fragments coming down) being placed behind them, to better show off the destruction of the DS2 and the debris raining down from the explosion.
I think the explosion itself (both the space shot and the view on Endor) needs to be completely redone, sans explosion ring regardless, with maybe a shot of Han holding onto Leia (to go overtop Elijah Wood on top of the hill in DEEP IMPACT at the end) as you see the DS fragments go through the sky over and behind them.
Here are some clips:

(0:44 - could the DS be shown blowing up in low orbit and - not so much destroy Endor- but push the clouds back from the shockwave?)

I know this prolly doesnt belong but check this out. I made it from all of the posters coz i couldnt find a big one of the 93 trilogy boxset so here. use it as u want. I know the green saber sticks out but its all about continuity. here is the link for the biggin. http://lifejuicesff.deviantart.com/art/THe-Complete-Trilogy-118460153

I know what you mean, and have started a half-assed looking version of it. Problem is I don't have much footage to work with at the moment.
I need to either rip the non-ringed explosion from the GOUT, or use an entirely different scene.

i don't know about endor looking like saturn
maybe this combined with this:
will give the gas giant some unique look
I was thinking more along these lines (the land masses and oceans spoil the gas giant look) :
Here's a better version (?)
