Thank you very much, FanFiltration! I haven't been able to watch the whole movie yet, but what I saw looked amazing! Finally, we've got the SLV in widescreen and on DVD!

On the anamorphic topic, I think it actually IS anamorphic ... the information is just missing in the IFO file, so the picture looks squeezed on the computer as well as on tv. In both cases you would have to adjust the width manually. I recommend using a program called IfoEdit to fix this before you burn the movie onto DVD. Just load the IFO file and change the settings from 4:3 to 16:9, then save the file and everything's gonna be fine.

I agree that the image itself is anamorphic and that the screen ratio has to be modified. As Oso Blanco indicates, the IFO file ratio has to be changed. I know most of you are on a PC, but if you're on a Mac, an IFO editor for Mac is myDVDedit with the url http://www.mydvdedit.com and a tutorial on how to modify to 16:9 is on this page http://www.mydvdedit.com/viewtutorial.php?t=27e&pg=forum

To add to his statement...if you have a newer HDTV that's capable of multiple ratios, especially one that can stretch out a 1.33:1 standard picture, and if you have an adaptable DVD or Blu-Ray player, you should have absolutely no problem viewing the film sans the squeezed picture distortions.  It played just fine with our VIZIO HDTV and a Phillips DVD player, and then with my Blu Ray player with a much bigger Sharp HDTV.  As for playing on PCs, if you have a widescreen monitor and your DVD software can stretch out picture, you should be able to view the film without distortions.  True. the disc is anamorphic, just need a little know how on your electronics to view the film correctly.

Oso Blanco and I were referring to modifying the dvd creation to provide an aspect-correct viewing of the dvd on any player and tv, computer or otherwise. My dvd player and tv both do not have that modify-ability. My tv has 4 zoom aspects, none of which accomplishes the task properly.

Thanks Oso for bringing up the issue of anamorphic - it forced me to discover a Mac option and it has worked beautifully on all of my players.

Fanfiltration rocks!

after looking at this it does look squished,FF looks like this was anamorphic you should have encoded at 16:9 not 4:3,what encoder do you use just out of curiousity, here are screens of it in 16:9 and they look correct.

so if there is a way to fix the ifo that would be great.

I think it went from 16:9 to 4:3 when I put the coverted Avi video through VirtualDub.  You see, I took the source from a DVD rip with DVD Decrypter. After the rip with DVD Decrypter, I am left with VOB files. I took the VOB files and used VobEdit to split up the VOB into audio and avi video.  You can't just use the avi at this point because it skips for some reason when you try to play it. Before I could edit it, I had to put it through VirtualDub (huffyuv  v2.1.1 codec). That is when it droped down to 4:3

I'm sorry about this problem. I'm just not good with the aspect ratio end of things.

While I think the this edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is good, there are some problems.

During the scene where Kirk, Spock and McCoy talk about the Intruder after they successfully went into warp, there is a quick second of nothing but black during their conversation. It happens just after McCoy says "Well, isn't it lucky for you that we just happen to be heading your way."

There is also some audio sync issues, especially during the beginning of the scene listed above and where Scotty is talking about why Kirk would order the ship to be set on self-destruct.

I am taking the torrent down. I don't know how these problems got past me.

It will return when I fix these errors.

Maybe you could also re-master it in anamorphic, since others have suggested the fixes for it.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

That is the plan, but I am going to need help with the settings in Adobe Premiere for 16:9 from a 4:3  AVI

  • Don't know if this could be fixed, but when Kirk and Scotty see the Enterprise for the first time, there is a reflection in the window. According to my memory, this was not in the Special Longer Version, added to the Director's Edition to add more resonance to the event (but I was personally bugger by because the reflective properties were not retained throughout). Again, you might not be able to fix this and, in the grand scheme of things, doesn't detract from the flow, but, since this is what seems like a purist effort, just F.Y.I.
  • Beginning of the Kirk/Spock/McCoy reacquainted scene, the dialogue is slightly out of sync, then seems to correct itself.
  • After McCoy says to Spock, "We just happen to be heading your way" (57:58), there is a lapse of footage for a split second, followed by Kirk's line.
  • Audio glitch at 1:02:30 after Chekov says his line and prior to Decker's line.
  • Very, very subtle video stutter at 1:03:32.
  • Audio stutter at 1:04:36.
  • At 1:04:47, the word "medic" is heard, but no one is seen saying it.*
  • Audio stutter at 1:05:55
  • Audio stutter at 1:07:02.
  • Audio stutter at 1:13:12.
  • Audio stutter at 1:14:02.
  • Video stutter at 1:14:11.
  • Audio stutter at 1:15:08.
  • Audio stutter at 1:20:49.
  • Audio stutter at 1:33:34.
  • Another Director's Edition shot at 1:36:53 with V'Ger in the background where once was a black background. Again, just for purist's sake.
  • Audio stutter at 1:42:09.
  • This might be just on the film, but the video has a black bar flicker on screen at 1:42:39.
  • Audio stutter at 1:55:16.
  • Audio echo from Ilia at 1:58:06.
  • Repeated audio at around 2:04:24.
  • Audio stutter at 2:07:21.
  • A frame skips at 2:14:47.

* This is the edits big snag. This is the section where we run into missing footage. For some reason, there is missing footage foe parts of this scene. The few missing sections have not made been release in letterbox anyplace.  As far as I can see, there is no way to fix this error without the scene becoming more noticeable then it is now.

Just in case this helps while you fix these issues, in regards to the anamorphic issue, I did use IFOedit to fix the 16:9 flag in the vts_02_0.IFO file (which is the movie itself), and also in the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. It just took a second. But, there wasn't anything I could do with the vts_01_0.IFO file (the menu screen and stills) because:

If I make no changes to vts_01_0.IFO, then the menu screens are not displayed properly on a 4:3 set, because of the anamorphic issue. All the menu screens are squished, including the "warp" transition, but the publicity stills are actually correct.

If I fix the 16:9 flag in that file, then the menus will be in the 16:9 aspect ratio (which is the ratio they are made for), as well as the "warp" transition, but then the publicity stills are displayed incorrectly (it seems the stills need to play as 4:3, not 16:9). I can't fix the menus without messing up the stills, because they are all contained on vts_01_0. So its a choice of either having the menus display incorrectly, or the stills display incorrectly. Ideally, the menus, stills, and the warp transition should all be done in 4:3, not 16:9, as most dvds are done. That way the menus can be displayed as 4:3 like normal dvds, and then the actual feature will be anamorphic 16:9.

Hope this makes some sense.

Ok, I am attempting to re-encode the video at 16:9 now.  I tried to fix everything on the list that was not part of the original release.

Here's one I caught.

During the Epsilon 9 introduction, there are two shots of the space man that differe from the Director's Edition to this edition.

Theatrical/Special Longer Edition: It shows the space man flying past us, than cuts to a slow pan down shot of him using his thrusters to gain speed.

Director's Edition: The shots have been switched where it now shows the space man using his thrusters and than cutting to the shot of him passing the camera.

The Director's Edition is the one you used.

Oh!

You know the space station that Kirk beams to before he and Scotty take the travel pod to the Enterprise? Well, the last establishing shot of the station that shows the windows and the crew working inside, the Director's Edition put the Travel Pod into the scene where as in the original versions it wasn't docked.

And this is probably me, but since it wasn't in the trims it may be out of your control.

After Kirk beams aboard the station to meet Scotty, I seem to recall a moment where he starts out still and than starts moving like he was in a troop march. The Director's Edition trims it where we see him walking from the start.

Again, this may be hard to catch since it's trimming wasn't shown in the trim's video on the DVD, but that's what my memory is trying to convince me of remembering.

P.S. Sorry I'm columboing you like crazy. If I thought of all these edits at the same time, I'd put it in one post. My apologies.

Since the new headline is "RECALLED!," I'm assuming there's going to be a second issuing of the Special Longer Version in the pipeline?

Yes! *SMILE*

We are planing to fix the aspect ratio, re-encode with a better encoder, fix the glitches and shots that are not part of the original 1983 SLV.

I hope to have this back up ASAP.

I was just wondering what you guys thought about the menus, the rare audio interviews (that I re-edited), the Production stills, and the little surprise you get when you start the film?

The publicity stills and the interviews are very cool, and the way the Enterprise takes off at movie start is awesome to,but I have never been a fan of the annoying warnings faneditors put on there DVD's,because quit frankly they are easily stripped and really do nothing, people are going to do whatever they want with the video anyways(I should know,ALOT of my previous works have been and still are being sold),just like we do,but your own little FF presentation is OK,it is like your signature.

Just got FEDS to and did not like the warning on that either,so I will strip it to LOL,FE started all that BS and now it seems everyone thinks it has to be on there.

Hell the official retail versions have arnings up the ass and we don't seem to listen to those do we?\

but hey that is just me,FF keep an eye on your PM's,you will be gettting one shortly.
