Star Wars: The Trilogy **PROJECT STALLED DUE TO HARD DRIVE FAILURE** — Page 2

The problem with that is the font.  When I change the font size, the lines get smaller.  I haven't found a good workaround for this.  I do know exactly what you mean though, I thought the same thing as I was making them.

I 'm sure you can do it if you're using PhotoShop.

First, you'll want to use just the solid version of the font for the graphic.

Now if you left click on the layer while holding the control key, you'll select the entire area of the text (given it's the only solid object in the layer).

From here, go to a menu at the top called "Select" or "Selection", then scroll down to "modify" and choose "Contract".

Do it by a small number of pixels at first to make the black background for the text. Keeping the contracted selection, use the paint bucket and fill the selection with black.

Finally, go back to the original layer, contract the selection more, and delete the selection. If I explained that right, the text should be hollow now.

Do you have the font in solid?  Cause then you could just type it out and select the outline and contract the selection however many pixels you need.  Or visa versa.  That would make them all the same size.

EDIT: I experimented for too long with it and didn't reply fast enough.  Glad to know I was trying to do it right.

Haha I actually figured that would happen to me. :P Only I was on Ubuntu, and I was too lazy to boot Windows so I could tool around in PhotoShop.

I'm pretty close to doubling up onto Ubuntu myself after seeing the better half having such a great time with it.

There is a lot of great free software on that system.

I'm a Mac user and the one of the few things keeping me on OS X is Adobe produce, I've never played games on my machine (there aren't many anyway) but there are Adobesque programs on Ubuntu going for free.

Cinelerra looks particularly useful.

I have Adobe's CS4 Master Collection for OS X, and Avid Media Composer.  Both are available for Windows.  I'd rather shoot myself than to try to work with either one on a Windows machine - they're so unstable compared to their Mac counterparts.

Anyway, I'll check out the contracting thing - I wasn't aware of that tool.  Thanks.

if you fill the text in solid, use the fx tool ON THE LAYER and use 'STROKE' (should be at the bottom). this could make an outline for it that will be a standard thickness of your choosing.

RETURN OF THE JEDI:
- NO "STAR WARS Episode VI"
- Entirely new opening crawl (necessitated by story changes)
- Entirely new opening logo
- Anamorphically-enhanced GOUT video
- New menus
- Radical re-edit of film

This will be the most drastically different.  The edits I plan to make reflect the "ROTJ Fan-O-Matic" thread quite a bit ("SomethingStarWarsRelated," you will be credited for your ideas in my edit, even if I don't distribute it widely), such as:

- The film will either open on Tatooine with Chewbacca being brought in, then Vader arriving at DSII, or vice-versa
- I'm toying with the idea that Leia is already there, and Han has long been unfrozen and is in the dungeon already, but this may not happen
- Luke is already on Dagobah, Yoda dies, Luke/R2 leave
- R2 and 3PO go to deliver the message, but get put to use as slave labor instead
- Luke comes to the palace at night, is captured (possible Rancor removal, not sure yet)
- BOBA FETT WILL NOT BE IN MY ROTJ AT ALL
- Sarlacc fight will be edited for silliness reduction
- Emperor arrives at DSII
- Rebel briefing, Luke may just not be present at all
- HEAVY editing on Endor to reduce Ewok silliness
- The rest of the movie will basically play out as before, but there will be no mention of Luke/Leia as siblings, and general silliness/cheesiness will be removed
- Hopefully a new/restructured ending to bring the trilogy to a more satisfying end

Well, that's very nice...thank you, ChainsawAsh. The reason I've been putting together these ideas is so that someone will use them! :)

Once the project is done, I'll send a copy your way.  It's the least I can do for the one that inspired me to do this in the first place!

YES! This is what I'd been looking for. Thanks for the redirection.

This project sounds like a good one, C.A. Seeing the logos in the same sort of style and color is pretty neat!

Oh, and if you are going to use the GOUTs (at least initially; using Ady's color corrected SEs is a nice idea, too, especially if we find out sometime when he plans to get to ROTJ), would the Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition be a good one for you to use for Star Wars?

As a lot of other things have come up, this project is on hold at least until the semester is over.

What I'd like to do, if Ady is okay with it, is use his Revisited edits as a base, with his AVCHD release for things that I'd replace.

Here's an example of what I want to do with SW (yes, I know this has changed dramatically from my initial posting):

- Use the ROTJ-style Fox logo from another movie, probably Alien 3 since I know that uses the same logo and I own the 2-disc set
- Use the old-style Lucasfilm logo, possibly recreated by me, possibly a cleaned-up GOUT
- Recreate the GOUT crawl in After Effects, but use Ady's Revisited starfield so I can use his opening shot
- Use Revisited until the escape pod goes to Tatooine
- Use SE AVCHD shot of escape pod (not a huge fan of Ady's twin sun lens flare)
- Use Revisited until they're on the sandcrawler
- Use SE AVCHD of sandcrawler interior (to remove Ady's added battle droid - the PT never happened with these edits, remember!)
- Remove added 2004 Threepio line ("We've stopped!")
- Use SE AVCHD for Ben's hut sequence (keeping the theatrical cut of this scene, though I actually do kinda like the "intended" cut Ady reconstructed)
- Use SE AVCHD for torture droid (one of the only changes I legitimately hated about Revisited)
- Use Revisited from there until Mos Eisley
- Attempt to restore as much of 1977 Mos Eisley as I possibly can from a cleaned-up anamorphic GOUT
- On the fence about the cantina sequence (though I'll definitely keep the Revisited DVD-9's severed arm) - I'm not sure if I should keep Ady's digital tweaks here or not
- Keep using Revisited until Alderaan, where I'll restore the original explosion (mainly because I hate the "shockwave" thing, and I was kinda disappointed Ady used it)
- Remove added 2004 stormtrooper line ("There's no one here!")
- Use Revisited until Han runs into a dead end, reverting to a cleaned-up GOUT for that shot
- Use Revisited Purist for the duel (no music, but updated lightsabers)
- Forgot where this was chronologically, but I'll use the SE AVCHD for the "round-table" Death Star discussion (removing added music)
- Use Revisited until Luke/Biggs, which will be removed
- Use Revisited for pretty much the rest of the movie, with the exception of restoring the last shot of Tarkin just before the Death Star explodes
- Use the theatrical mono mix for most of the movie - the parts that I can't use it for, I'll mix-down to mono to match

That's my tentative plan.  I'm going to wait on ESB/ROTJ until Ady finishes his Revisited trilogy.

And if Ady would rather I didn't use his edits, I'll just use a cleaned-up GOUT, which means SW/ESB will be more or less untouched.  SW will use the mono mix entirely, and ESB will have the crawl change and theatrical stereo if I can find it.

I'll post an update when I re-do the logos again.

I'm happy to see those two! :)

I really like that one, too. I still like the original because it looks so run down and sparse. Just adds to Luke's wanting to leave that "rock" and join the Acamedy.

How do you feel about using lines from the radio dramas?

Is there anything in the radio drama that the movie needs?  I've never listened to them, but I don't think anything really needs to be added.  ROTJ is a different matter, naturally.  I'm really hoping Ady does a lot of the things I want to do with ROTJ so I don't have to do so much work :-P

Oh, one change I forgot to mention that's very important to me:

- Remove first 2 SE dewback shots.  They're entirely pointless additions that fuck up the music and have always bugged me in general, and I was very disappointed to see them remain in ANH:R.

Late post, I know, but I'm watching ANH:R right now because I can't sleep, and I just got to that scene.

I've finished a test of Empire's opening crawl.  It's synchronized to the GOUT version of the "Star Wars" crawl, with "Empire's" starfield, opening logos, and first shot.

It's still a little rough around the edges - there's a couple parts toward the end of the crawl where you can see me "putting on the brakes" when my crawl was moving faster than the original.  These issues will be fixed for the final version.

Also, while I've been trying to fix the logos so the line thicknesses are the same, I'm having trouble with it, so the logo used in this test is the same one I used in the first post of the thread.

Here's the YouTube link to the new crawl (remember, it's a WIP!) - you can also find the link in the first post:

--CLIP REMOVED - WILL BE REPOSTED--

If you can't see it yet, it's still being processed - give it 10/15 minutes or so.

There are a lot of rivers in the text (big gaps between the words as the software you are using tries to fit whole words onto each line).

If you have access to someone with a mac this program removes those automatically and saves a heck of a lot of time (the programmer is working on Windows, Linux and iPhone versions but it has been a long time coming) :

I use a Mac, but I don't like automated templates.  I'd much rather do it myself in After Effects - I have more control that way.

You're right about the "rivers" - the text was auto-formatted in Photoshop.  For my next pass, I'm going to be re-typing the text completely for three reasons:

1. To change the color to match the GOUT Star Wars crawl (mainly so I don't have to recreate it)
2. To remove said "rivers"
3. To make the text block the right size - I had to stretch and resize it to match the SW GOUT's text block in After Effects after I'd made the Photoshop text file.

There's another problem with the opening logo - for some reason, as it recedes it "rainbows" a bit, for lack of a better description.  This will hopefully be fixed with the new logo I'm working on.

wow, that is brilliant! the original lucasfilm and fox logos are a really nice touch too! i look forward to seeing this project.

Chainsaw you should use those fancy covers you made. Then just add your own stuff to it. or you could make totally new covers
