Thanks for your posts, everyone. All very sound points coming from both sides of the argument.

Several have voiced their concerns about my recent shift in policy regarding the open discussion of bootlegs. I want you all to know that I take your opinions seriously, and forum policy, just like many things in this world, is open to debate and change.

To address the credibility issue, I'll direct users toward Bill Hunt, who uses one side of his mouth to condemn bootlegs, and the other side of his mouth to REVIEW the damn things. No one seems to think the Digital Bits has a credibility problem though. Also, the flood of bootleg discussions that were feared by some once the ban was lifted has not come to pass.

I'm not convinced the casual discussion of bootlegs in an open forum will destroy the credibility of this site or the petition.

I can promise that these forums will NEVER become a method for people to advertise bootlegs. A few members have posted links to reviews of particular bootlegs, and I think that's fine. I even suggested members get in touch with one of them, which was going too far.

From now on, the policy will be to refrain from open sales of laserdisc or VHS backups. All such discussions should be moved to private messages or e-mail.

I won't object to posts that discuss the quality of various bootlegs. However, any posts that say, "E-mail me at bootlegbastard@hotmail.com for the bestest bootlegs EVAR" should be reported so I can delete them. Same thing goes for posts like, "emale boottlegbastard@hotmail.com cuz his DVDRs r teh r0X0r5!!!!!!111"

Here's the twist: bootlegs of the Special Editions are off limits. No discussions, no reviews, no links, no sales. The SEs are a tangible, announced product that will receive an official release later this year. As such (and this is completely subjective on my part), they are no longer viable bootleg options. Back when Star Wars on DVD was a question mark, they were forgiveable. With their arrival now imminent, no one has any excuse for buying SE bootlegs.

To summarize:

1. No SE bootleg discussion, period. They've been announced. Preorder them if you want them.

2. No posting contact info to solicit backup sales, whether it be your own contact info or someone else's. Restrict this to private messages and e-mail.

3. No links to online stores that sell bootlegs. This includes ebay auctions.

4. Reviews and opinions of laserdisc or VHS backups are permitted. Links to reviews are acceptable provided the review doesn't advertise the bootlegs for sale or provide direct links to a site that offers them for sale.

Finally, and most importantly:

5. No naked pictures of Ernest Borgnine.

I hope this clears things up.

Thank you for clearing this up, Jay. I truly appreciate it.

Dayv, I know you're obsessed with him, but you heard Jay. Now please remove all image links that you have previously posted. And seriously consider professional help.

Yey! So I can still play the role of secret forum police! One more reason to live!
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

I will abide by your new rules even though I'm probably one of the more egrerious offenders. The simple fact is, if the studio doesn't make it available, someone else will. It happened with Schindler's List and it will continue to happen with the true versions of the OT until they are released officially. I don't believe in buying/selling bootlegs of films/shows that exist already, what would be the point when someone can simply order it from an e-tailer, not to mention the fact that the counterfeits could only be of inferior quality? If I like something enough, I will buy it from deepdiscountdvd or a similar website. If it isn't available, I will find it elsewhere. I think most people have this attitude unless you're a hardline anti-piracy advocate. I believe piracy does pose a small threat to the industry, but the problem is vastly overstated and is used more as a scapegoat than anything. The ads the MPAA ran last year about the "starving employees" made me want to puke; piracy never has and never will have any effect on the salaries/jobs of Hollywood employees. The only thing that is really affected are the studios' profit margins. Counterfeiting and piracy will always exist in east asian nations because they are poor and can rarely afford to buy licensed versions (especially of software). Even more strange, many nations RELY on the shadow income generated by sales and export of counterfeit goods. It may seem odd to you in your comfortable living room, but take a trip to Vietnam sometime and then ask why the piracy rate is 99%! I'm not defending this kind of activity, but it's a fact of life in those nations... sell bootlegs or starve.. tough choice, eh?

Guys, you know too well that I'm just joking. I have nothing to do with those few threads that disappeared during the past months... I haven't send any PMs to Jay, honest... Iraq has WMDs... Oswald is the culprit...

I have to come clean! I broke the cardinal rule, I bought bootlegs of the Original 77, 80, and 83 versions about a month ago! Forgive me Jay, but I was weak and I believe that filmmakers should not change their movies (ie changing black and white movies to color or adding or taking out scenes). I am a firm believer that movies should be left alone, because they represent a specific time in movie history and they show how movie making evolves. I love movies and I hate them being tampered with! That is what forced me to buy bootlegs, because Lucas is only releasing the Special Editions and the original versions are what got me so interested in the saga. I was forced out of necessity to do this. I want in my own small way to preserve classic movie making!

The quality and everything about the DVD is GREAT!! It is in widescreen and has great disc and case art. The menus are equally impressive, the disc also has Bonus Material!! Overall you'd think it was an official release and not a bootleg! I have absolutely no complaints about the DVD and if yoiu should ever com across these BUY THEM IMMEDIATLEY!! You won't regret your decision, I didn't.

DC, can you give us details about the set itself so we know what to look for? Maybe you posted it already and I missed it, so please refresh my memory. Or if you know of a place where it can be bought, maybe you can PM me the information. I'd appreciate it.

Well if you are looking for them these are the signs to look for: 1: Go to ebay that is where I bought mine. 2: Type in star wars DVDs. 3: look for a title that has the words ORIGINAL releases. 4: look for the picture of the DVDs the ones that I got had the original posters as the cover of the DVD. 5: I don't want to dishearten anyone, but they are very expensive be prepared to pay a lot of money. 6: lastly look for a certian seller called mzauctions he has the dvds. Well I guess that covers it I hope you all find the lucky break like I did!!
