The Many Wipes Of Star Wars.

Is there or was there ever a logical pattern to the wipes used in Star Wars films?

If there is or was how does it go?

If there isn't should there be one and how could it work?

Do the wipes in the PT match the style of wipes in the OT, if not what are the main offenders and what can be done to make them match?

Do they need to match?

What about both of the Clone Wars series and the Droids and Ewok spin offs?

I thought the wipes are a subject that hasn't really been covered much (I may be wrong so please correct me if I am in error here) so I started this here thread to give us a place to study and debate this unique area of the saga that often goes unnoticed.

If you mention wipes and the PT, I am sure there are going to be lots of jokes about it.

I don't think there was any logical pattern to them.  The only ones I actually notice are the iris wipe from the sandcrawler to the dewbacks in ANH and the diamond one in Yavin.  That one looks odd.

When I was making "Rescuing Star Wars", I had a difficult time replicating the clock wipe in Vegas.  Vegas DOES have a clock wipe, but (at least in my version), when you turn on "feather", it only feathers the moving portion.  In SW, the stationary portion is also feathered.  It took a ton of tweaking to get it to look right.

ROTS has the WORST wipes of ANY movie I've ever seen.  It bugged me when I was 16 and in high school, and it bugs me even more now that I'm 20 and in film school.  The OT had the right balance, but ROTS feels like it has to use a different wipe every time, and most of them are ridiculous. (The checkerboard wipe?  Really?)  I haven't seen AOTC in ages, and I don't think the wipes in TPM were that bad IIRC.  But ROTS ... *shudders*
