I was in my town library in the video section and found a 1995 VHS version of ANH, can I get an opinion if its messed with or not? I didn't get it but I was curious, if it's the original verion I may try to buy it off them.

That would be from the 'faces' set, if it is from '95, so yes it's the original version. Anything pre-1997 is the 'original' (pre-special edition) version.

This version is also available on the DVD 'bonus disc' (aka the "GOUT") - so there'd be no reason for you to try & buy an old VHS copy from a library.

So if its available on DVD why does everyone hate the GOUT?

Because it's a lazy, half-arsed recycle of old laserdisc masters, when it should have been a new and fully restored transfer (as sharp and detailed as the 2004 DVDs).

Do a search for 'GOUT' on here - you'll find plenty more details about that set's technical shortcomings (and some folks' very creative ways of overcoming them).

Anyway, that's not really what this particular thread is about - here we're very deliberately looking for low-tech! :-)

Ah I see, a year and a half on here and I just learned that, well damn what's the big deal with just restoring it and slapping it in with the Special Editions, Lucas can still favor the SEs but atleast we have the original.

I guess there is a lot of money to be made by instead of selling one really good DVD package, selling loads of rubbish variations that the majority of potential purchasers wouldn't know are less than perfect or the same stuff repackaged.

Perhaps Lucas just loves these boards and is goading us into making preservation and fan-edit projects by putting out shoddy goods?

It's the only explanation for why the SE disc set was hideous as well.

A quick bump for this, just in case there might have been any developments in the last year or so!

Any more leads on a complete recording of an original TV broadcast? Most folks here were hoping to find the 1982 UK ITV screening, but really any TV broadcast would be great - the more station idents and commercials the better!

Wow, 6 years!
I still have Russ's DVD transfers of an edited recording. The plan was to reconsitute the whole broadcast including the missing ads, but I never found any in acceptable quality.

There's plenty of evidence that complete recordings exist - still holding out hope that one will surface around these parts some day.

I have what is probably a late 80's to early 90's vhs rip of star wars and could probably still get the tapes for esb and rotj but I don't have a vhs player anymore.

EDIT: TV4 didn't start broadcasting until 1990 so it's probably an early 90's recording.

EDIT 2: I usually open it in vlc and turn on deinterlacing and choose mean mode instead of blend.  This makes it pretty watchable. Sorry I recorded it with divx.  It was like one of my first captures years ago and I didn't know what I was doing. Anyway, this is on a.b.sw now if anybody wants to snatch it. It's about 4GB and it stutters a bit at the end, so don't expect the throne room scene to be intact.

It is from sweden and aired on tv4.  The person recording it cut out commercials etc by stopping the player and pressing start when the film resumed.  It is therefore occasionally missing frames and sw for example doesn't start until A long time ago....

It could have benefited a lot from going through a tbc before being captured.  I no longer have a vhs player or I'd give another go at it. Anyway, qtgmc fixes it pretty good too.

Here's a raw screenshot or two.

Luke threw twice…maybe.
