I think this could work out well; it would be one of the simplest changes and would help the window and building stand out better.

I think we are forgetting the room in which Leia is has a glass roof and hence such a spectacular lightning would be posible for a glass roof, it's not just sun-roof, it's huge, you can see it in the next scene from the inside, the whle roof has glass with sun pouring in....let's not forget that....

I agree with the reflection. It adds more definition to the window.

Go for it

if the reflection is done in the window as it is it would be correct, because there is no reason for the inside to be darker due to what I explained above. The window could be as bright as it is, and hence the reflection would be very blurry and with low opacity.

The fact there is glass in the ceilng is not lost on me. Yes bright lighting would be possible with the skylights, but the scene with her and Han inside really isn't that bright. And from the outside it definitely would not be as bright as shown in the window.

You think it isn't really that bright? is there someone that can pull a screencap from the following scene, from Leia's POV? because I remember it was pretty darn bright.....

The room interior could be taken down a little bit (but it is very bright so it should be still bright) but Leia is right next to the window and would get much of the daylight on her so she should be pretty much the same as she is now.

A reflection would add much but I was never really convinced that the interior fits into that matte in a realistic fashion.

The room element might be distorted to map into the suggested interior space of the building in the matte more (it seems a little flat).

Author
Time

The point is, it looks *brighter* than it is outside, which makes NO sense whatsoever.  You yourself said it's a skylight - how, then, can it be brighter inside than outside, if it's using outside light?

Author
Time

I agree but perhaps part of the problem is the life action insert is slightly out of focus where as all the buildings are in sharp focus and at the same level of intensity.

If the light is that bright inside surely the light outside should be even brighter seeing as it's getting the full glare of the sun.

The buildings closer to us should be in focus to roughly the same degree as the live action elements (allowing a little give for the glass) and the buildings further back should shift out of focus a bit as they recede into the background.

your forgetting one thing. you're all going by the 2004 colouring and not my colour correction. as you can see here there is hardly any difference between the brightness of the room in both shots. all that may need doing is to very slightly darken the shadows inside for the exterior shot

and there is already a small reflection on the window but you need to view the scene moving to see it.

and no more pink buildings. lol

Well, that ends that discussion pretty quickly. Lol. It's amazing what some good color correction can do to a scene. Thanks for the screencaps, Ady.

Yeah, if the shadows are darkened a bit, it'll look spot-on.

The ceiling still doesn't match, though, which has bugged me since I first saw ESB (before the SE, there was a skylight ... but another floor above Leia ... )

I think the best thing to fix that is to just move the whole window slightly to the right, then move the interior slightly more to the right.  That way, it won't look drastically different, but it'll help the ceiling match the roof at the same time.

By George, it's Star Wars revisted on the outside, 2004 DVD on the inside!

Seriously, simply darkening the window doesn't make it look any less like a composited shot inside of a matte painting.  If anything, it makes it look even more obvious.  I think Ady's screen cap looks just fine, although I will admit that a bit more reflection on the glass could sell the shot a bit better.

As a side note, Ady, looking at the 2 shots you posted, is there an inconsistency between the exterior and interior views of the roof?  The outside shot clearly shows that little lattice-like structure atop the room, but in the interior shot no such structure is visible through the ceiling's windows.

Edit: Gah!  You just beat me to it ChainsawAsh.  Was the building really different pre-SE?

Ehhh, not to sure if I agree there.  Cloud City is a mining colony: either its going to look like Vegas or ... well... a mining colony.  Granted, the "wealthy" may live on top, with the rest of the classes getting poorer as the levels go down (and the jobs get dirtier), so maybe the BOTTOM of Cloud City could have the jets of fire and pollution coming out and all - to contrast with the "pristine" top section.

It's a gas mine, though, so it's not likely to get as dirty as an ore mine.

In any case, I think it's important that the upper levels be kept as squeaky clean as possible.  Themeatically, the whole point of the place is that everything is bright and sunny on the surface, but dark and ugly underneath once we get to know it better.  Showing off the unpleasant side of it too early works against what the film is trying to do, I think.

Well there you go then: keep the top relatively clean and have the bottom of the city dirty and grimy.

Also keep in mind that even if they are mining gasses (from the gas giant they are in the atmosphere of), it can still get pretty dirty.  Just get into a smoker's car whose been smoking inside it for a good couple of years and run your finger on the upholstery - lots of yellow muck.

You know, it does make you wonder how they BREATHE and all, being that most gas giants don't exactly have oxygen (or whatever they breathe in STAR WARS).  The top "city" part I can see being shielded and having its own atmosphere, but you would think Luke would be sucking air when ejected on the weather vane...

Vaderios:
in regards to your alteration of the Luke matte, I like the original darker look a lot better.  To me the problem (if there is one) is just how "flat" it seems to be, hence the idea of just having the clouds moving slowly in the background - gas giants tend to have strong weather (at least going by Jupiter), though again any movement with the clouds could be slow - just enough to have some movement and get rid of the "static" feeling.

Then again, some lighting could be added to the hallway, or some Ridley Scott lighting effects.

as always sorry for the crudity of the image but here it is!

I think this is the best option, minus the window tinting and making the reflection more of the city in daytime (I understand it is a rough sketch of sorts).  Just get rid of the top portion of the building and add reflection to the glass.

I still suggest to add atmospheric haze to background buildings (be it this shot or all of them) to add some depth - something about the "prequel" effects that look computery and almost animated.

Is the shadow consistency regarding the "transparent" center skylight disk, which shows up as opaque in the shadow? Other than that, I can't see any problems with the interior shadows. :/

I think the problem is that the sun's light is coming from the left, but the skylight's shadows appear to be cast from a source above and to the right.

Right?

That, and the lattice structure above the skylight disappears in the interior shot.

The buildings should reflect some of the blue of the sky and have some yellow from the sun. and not being so black and white

@Monroville:

I say it again: ignore the lighting just see the details in the walls. I like how the shapes pop up and add some more to the alien architecture. :)

Edit:

The colors in the GOUT are more acurate. See blue tones and yellow highlights. Still not so shadowed

I need to go and watch the scene to visualize the direction you're indicating, but if you're saying what I think you're saying, that's hilariously obvious, yet apparently invisible to all of us. :P ILM probably never thought of that in terms of continuity- just took the indoor footage and placed it in the "window" area for effect.

Author

I thought it was never shown in the room where the window was.

And the pre SE building had too much room on top to have that skylight

Wow, I COMPLETELY forgot what the original matte looked like.  Amazing what not seeing the OUT for so long can do to one's memory.  That said, this is one of the few SE changes that truly improved the movie in terms of continuity.

i'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet. where has the window that Leia looks out of gone? surely there should be a window instead of a corridor there?

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

but thats going to be hell, if not impossible, to fix so i may just leave this

That is pretty strange... so that IS the perspective of the window?

And the official GOUT/DVD comparison:

You know, I think I like the original 1980 matte design a lot better - maybe the top of Leia's building could go, but I like how you can see more of the city in that shot.

I also think that the overhead sky inside the Leia room is too much flat blue - again, maybe some cloud work could add something...

So, I guess the easiest way to fix the exterior/interior lattice problem is delete the structure on top of the exterior shot so the top is just flat, as one of the mockups showed.

And I hate to question you Ady, but are you sure that's where the window is:

I mean, the lighting must be all kinds of messed up since the shadows are on the back wall at the beginning, and now on the front or side?

EDIT: It looks like the corridor appeared along the back wall.  If you look at the shadows across the wall decor, they match perfectly with the establishing shot.  Maybe just insert that corridor in the first shot?

Yeah, probably.  I imagine it wouldn't be worth trying to recreate the lattice structure for the interior shot.

Do you plan on deleting this Adywan?
