Still, Darth Vader (which literally means "Dark Father" in norwegian... or something) in A NEW HOPE was just a Shaw Brothers/James Bond style "bad student"/"chief henchman" who DID indeed kill Luke's father.

It was after Lawrence Kasden got involved (with EMPIRE) that the idea progressed to be more personal (I think that it could have been Kasden coming from a "western movie" point of view, in the sense that he may have thought of the American Civil War, where you had family members fighting against each other after taking opposing sides).
