Info Wanted: Star Wars: A New Hope - OLD TV Broadcast Rips Available?

I have been lurking around these forums for months, re-living a childhood dream, it’s amazing to see so many with such passion for the movies I hold so dear.

I have looked in amazment at some of the work done to preserve the ANH as it was first seen.

Anyway, …

My first glimpse of Star Wars was on VHS recorded off the TV complete with adverts (ITV).

Sadly I can no longer watch this copy as the video was lost long ago. I wonder if any other VHS rips with adverts are floating around?

Does anyone know the dates for UK airing for ANH on TV? When did it first show? Etc? I was told that my father recorded it when it was first on TV, he does not remember the year. “79 - 81ish” he thinks.

I remember very little of the adverts other than one about sweets… either skittles or m&ms… tones of them lots of children and like a fountain of sweets. Any guidence of what the year of this airing may have been would be nice.

Or my dream come true… a DVD transfer of the tv airing i watched (with adverts) for me to ware out… I can dream 😉

again, any advice or help would be great.

I taped it off ITV when it was first shown (onto Betamax no less) but that tape is lost too. It would have been useless to you anyway as I edited out all the adverts (I still expect the adver card to pop up at the right spot because I watch the thing literally hundreds of times).

Made a nice cover for it too out of possibly priceless now magazine articles.

I haven't grown up yet have I?

And welcome to the boards too, I hope you have fun here.

well adverts would be good but with or without, anything would be amazing to see again!

Ive have looked though those before posting, just re-read. and spotted

"if your recording is of the first ever ITV broadcast of Star Wars, then it'll be from 1982.

I've just dug out some clippings I saved from the TV Times way back then, and its dated for the week of 23-29th October 1982, with Star Wars being shown on the Sunday at 7.15."

But I must be blind as I can't see anyone stating that the vertions shared are from that TV rip? with or without ads. I have looked at the official list but can only see listings from either LDs or from bootleg VHS in the late 70s?

Can someone please spell this out for me?

I had spotted those also and I don't recognise any of the adverts or how the ads where cut into the movie with the effect.

Does a full VHS rip of the first tv showing of ANH in 1982 with adverts exsist anywhere?

I hope something comes up here, cos I'd love to see that again too.

This is the best scan of the TV Times cover I can find right now, any advances? :-)

My boss is currently storing boxes and boxes of VHS tapes at our office while his house is undergoing some improvements. He reckons he's been recording stuff since the early 80s, but can't remember what in very much detail! I'll have a peek when he's not around...

*wishes he could help look through a huge box of VHS, please let me know what you find!

I certainly remember the adverts but in the TVS region they didn't use the starburst effect, the title card is the same.

Which region were you in when it was broadcast?

I can't remember which region we lived in at the time...(Did lots of moving etc then) The original poster of the video on you tube says its from a later year like you said above, so it's not the version im after which is why i don't recognise the ads I assume.

UPDATE: I think it would have been the broadcast for Norfolk

Damn. I found (in the aforementioned hoard) a tape promisingly labelled 'Star Wars', which turned out to be nothing of the sort (though I expect Star Wars was on that tape at SOME time in the past!)

The other tape I grabbed was Empire, which was accurately labelled but the recording dates from the early 90s - nothing particularly nostalgic about that! The search continues...

Would that have been Yorkshire TV back then?

I found the yorkshire TV premier of Jedi BTW.

I live in the south - hampshire - and Star Wars was screened on TVS back then. I'd love to get hold of a copy of that screening too. I seem to remember the Smurfs was on before-hand?!?

We were one of the last people to get a VHS recorder, so I remember recording this onto cassette at the time... ahhh memories!

Russ Galatic Trade Federation site had this image captured from the itv broadcast not sure if he has it on dvd.

I didn't think something that ugly could look that good! PMs have been sent, thanks for the tipoff.

Baxterianism, I still have my VHS recording of the world television premier of Star Wars.  It was recorded in 1983 off of a now defunct Canadian station called "Super Channel."  It was the first payTV channel in Canada, and Star Wars was the first movie they ever aired.  No commercials in it, however, as it was a movie channel.

You can read a bit more about it here: http://theswca.com/images-misc/superchannelplaque.html

I was in my town library in the video section and found a 1995 VHS version of ANH, can I get an opinion if its messed with or not? I didn't get it but I was curious, if it's the original verion I may try to buy it off them.

That would be from the 'faces' set, if it is from '95, so yes it's the original version. Anything pre-1997 is the 'original' (pre-special edition) version.

This version is also available on the DVD 'bonus disc' (aka the "GOUT") - so there'd be no reason for you to try & buy an old VHS copy from a library.
