So Spock will bring 24th century technology to Earth around the time of kirks birth? And that is why the Enterprise and other things look much more updated during this film at this time period?

That is pretty cool. If I was sitting in that thing I am sure I'd feel an uncontrollable need to stand up every few minutes though.

At the end of the day, TOS is what matters. This new movie is just a typical disposable Hollywood action flick. At least TOS is remaining unmarred. Even if you are not a fan of the remastered TOS, the beauty of it is both are available. The Trek community is lucky that this movie will be forgotten in short time. Sure it is not going to do anything to get us more real Trek in the future, but neither was nothing, which is what we had coming before this. Trek has been dead for a while now, all we are seeing is the final nail. It dies with a bit less dignity, but it didn't have much of that left over the past several years. I mean, how much dignity can a whore really die with?

She'll be missed, but there are a lot of great memories of her, and those memories are all being preserved in beautiful blu-ray HD presentation. A lot better than the treatment the die hard Star Wars fan's whore of preference is getting. Poor old girl needs to retire, but is getting used more than ever, by younger and younger clients, who treat the girl with increasing roughness, not something she needs at her age.

Sorry for the crudeness of this analogy. It feels very fitting to me, but I admit, it is rather crass.

At least the Star Trek whore didn't have to suffer unneeded plastic-surgery.

Just started skimming through this thread... nice to see others feel the way I do about this movie.  My original excitement at the prospect of a reboot gave way to guarded optimism after the first trailer, turned to faint hope after the TV spots, and has ultimately become utter disappointment after watching the most recent ad Hunter6 linked to.

It's a shame really... the film could have had so much potential.  Can't say I'm really surprised, though -- it's just more of what Hollywood does these days:

- place effects before storyline

- eliminate any trace of originality and distinctiveness to appeal to the lowest common demonitator

- rehash formerly original concepts to death before they dare pursue a truly original idea

Hollywood truly does not understand what the masses really want, not least of all when in comes to Star Trek.  From Generations onward, the Star Trek mojo became lost.  Look at Wrath of Khan: is that movie regarded as the best of the franchise because of its gratuitous sex scenes, explosions, and incomprehensible action sequences?  No... it's because it has excellent archetypal characters and an intelligent storyline, both of which create good drama.

At least the posts in this thread remind me that, despite my misgivings and what Hollywood believes, there are still intelligent people out there who are cognizant of the trash which is being pushed on them.

Sadly, I think you'd have a better chance of convincing a brick wall to spontaneously crumble into dust than to turn some people away from their hatred and premature conclusions.

Look, if I see a fist coming at my face with great speed, I am going to flich and say, "Ah crap! This is gonna hurt." Am I jumping to a premature conclusion? I guess you could say I am. But in the end it is the right conclusion. A fist to the face doesn't feel good, and neither does watching something you love be drug through the mud and abused.

All the guys saying, "Ah, hell, you haven't even seen the film yet! At least give it a chance!" seem to be the ones who says, "I am not really that big of a Trek fan, but I might go see this..."

Look around, it is all the guys who actually like Star Trek who are flinching and getting ready for the pain. This new movie is Star Trek without its fans, and what is anything without fans? It is nothing.

Imagine your favorite sports team going to play against another big sports team in the other teams hometown. Your favorite team decides they can make more money if they lose, because there are more non fans in the audience than fans, so they agree to go out there and loose for the sake of more money. You as a fan would probably feel a bit pissed at your team for this, right?

Well that is exactly what this new Trek is doing, it is like they decided,'Sure we have a lot of fans, but we realized that there are far more non-Star Trek fans out there than Star Trek fans. So we are going to forget about the fans, and make a movie everyone else will, like... well, not "like" per se, but will be willing to pay a ticket price to go see it once and maybe even buy the DVD to see a couple of times before forgetting about it forever...'

I have no doubt it will be a wonderful smack-you-in-the-ass-and-nick-name-you-Bernie kind of fantastic sci-fi adventure flick, and it will likely help sell a lot of Apple products, but it wont be a Star Trek film, not really anyway.

Lol, remember back before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out? A bunch of us were dogging on it, and then some other posters came along and pointed out how ridiculous we were being to rag on a film we had never seen... did anyone actually think IJATKOTCS was a good film? Anyone?

In that ad/trailer, it says "FORGET...EVERYTHING...YOU KNOW". I think they're trying to warn Trekkies that they won't be able to make sense of what they will see.

The maketing really baffles me.  I mean it would be like Lucas if Lucas made a trailer for star wars episode 1 back in the day saying "forget everything you know about Star Wars". 

Despite the fact that the prequels were also made for a different and younger audience than the original star wars trilogy they were also at the same time catering to the old trilogy fans nostalgia, the final films quality being mediocre films has no bearing on the fact that Lucas tried to capture the magic of the old series and failed, just like indy IV.

Here they are shitting all over peoples beloved franchise and saying if your a fan of the canon star trek then stay at home.  Want to try the new flavor of the week pony up the 10 bucks and kiss them goodbye,lol.

Why can't there be room for both.  The 40 years of fandom does not end because of this film.  the original 6 classic films don't simply cease to exist because of this.  I mean as a trek fan i am happy we are getting tons of new comics, video games, and blu ray releases and the new movie may be a reason Paramount has not yet pulled the plug. 

I know it sounds funny but i am looking forward to What Alan Dean Foster can do with the terrible dialogue in his novelization.

You get both versions of the original series three seasons on blu ray old effects and new cgi seemless branched, Wrath of Khan completely restored from its original negative.  Trek Vi released in its theatrical version for the first time as well as the first movie in its theatrical presentation.

I mean the only negative is that the newly restored old effects version of the tv show which was saved for the blu ray release as a bonus feature (paramount the king of the double dipping scheme), and no such release announced for the cleaned up 1-6 on dvd.

You have no HDTV or Blu RAy then you are sunk.  Blu ray movies and players are very affordable now but tv prices are still high.

I mean things could be worse they could have had the enterprise E going back in time to stop nero.  Kinda a reversed generations passing of the torch backwards,lol.  Picard saves the Young Kirk and the crew of the enterprise 1701.

Or how come those temporal police from Enterprise show did not stop Nero,lol.

Hunter6 your forgetting that the best Trek film of all was directed and Helmed by someone who was neither a fan nor well versed in trek lore, Nicholas Meyer.  Remember Bennet and Meyer were brought outside of trek after the motion picture to breathe new life into trek.

What meyer was good at was being well schooled in Drama.  Not just action for the sake of blowing stuff up, and ooh now they have a budget of 150 million for lots of incredibly fake cgi and explosions and they can do fast cuts and quick action and bring a sense of speed into trek right out of star wars.

JJ is good at gimmicky plot twists as seen in Alias and Lost either as a producer writer and director.

I like how Sulu has a lever for warp speed on the i-prise like han had for hyperdrive on the falcon,lol.

I would bet you that JJ really wanted to make a Star Wars movie.  and Because Lucas said there is only 1-6 he ended up making star trek.  I mean he has said virtually everywhere about how much a huge fan he is of star wars, and pine saying he wanted to do a more of a han solo type character with his kirk.

That with action and dialogue straight out of a micheal bay transformers movie, plus prequel star wars era ilm's effects, Ryan Church's dubious designs, and ben burtt sound effects.  And the Guy who did the incredibled score and not Jerry Goldsmith because he died, sadly.

Bruce Greenwood's Reference to this Trek Being like Casino Royale and Its actor chris pine being like Daniel Craig does not ease concerns, especially if your like me and Liked only Connery and Brosnan,lol.

I be willing to bet Craigs bond is a lot closer to Connerys than Pines Kirk is to william shatners. 

I mean it would be like doing a star wars prequel with Han Solo and picking some joke of an actor to play Harrison's role.

I mean they cannot even get his eye color right, his motivation as a character right or his backstory right.  And they have the frickin enterprise being built in Iowa for cripes sake, un f'ing believable.

And another aimless youth adult child character cardboard cutout james dean style rebel. Gee did  we not already get that in prequel anakin or mutt from indy IV.

and unlike the inteliigent Stack of books with legs kirk who was called that by his friend in the episode "where no man has gone before".  We get the loser frat boy druggie who stumbles into a bar and gets his ass kicked and says " why are you talkin to me man".

Exactly! J. J. not being a ST fan is not a big deal at all. The problem is he doesn't get it, and has been very vocal about how he feels it needs to be changed and done differently.
