You know, how hard would it be to take Hammerhead from A NEW HOPE and replace Max Rebo with him? Maybe you could keep Rebo's body (but change the color to brown) and replace the head.

And Bingo: I like the BLACK HOLE command center idea you have. Forget how clean i(the original command center) looks; the room just looks boring. Maybe the overall room could be kept, but the skylight and some holographic maps could be added, as well as darken the flooring and walls to something more akin to stones or the like (ie the Empire is more "plastic" in their sets and designs, whereas the Rebels are more "naturalistic" - hippies versus the establishment, man! Jack boots versus berkinstocks!)
