Just wondering... which OT VHS boxset?

What version of the trilogy is this VHS boxset?

I found it at the local music store in the used VHS bin and noticed on the bottom it was dated 2000. So, I just assumed it was a re-release of the 1997 special edition. But then, after doing some research I found this which is apparently another 1997 boxset:

Lucas also continues to lead the fight for film preservation. "It's amazing," he says, "that you have to fight the studios to get them to preserve their films. . . . Parts of 'Dr. Strangelove' are gone; some of the music is lost. Kubrick is having to photograph individual frames to create a new fine-grain negative. That's madness, tragic madness."

The former is a 2000 re-release of the SE (and the first time it wasn't referred to as the SE), while the latter is the original '97 release of the SE (fullscreen).

The 2000 release also had a sneak peak of Episode 2 which showed you absolutely nothing of what made it into the final cut.  Or on the Episode 2 cut scenes for that matter.  It is cool for cut scene afficianados like myself.

Yeah, they are the same with different packaging.

I remember that. they had interviews with the young owen and beru. From that i assumed they actually played a role in the film [aotc].

Hmm, I just noticed on the 2000 boxset that, while, they were using the episode numbers for the first time, it still referred to the first movie as "Star Wars: A New Hope" rather than just "A New Hope." I'm thinking this was probably the last time.

That set was the beginning of the end. Or, at least it was when I got the first hint that ol' George was serious about the "One Last Time" bit.

I bought that set, though I got the VCD version of it. Same packaging and it has the Lars Episode II feature on, just CDs instead of VHS tapes. When I ordered it I had read that VCDs are better quality than VHS but not as good as DVD, turns out they look a lot worse than any VHS tape I have ever watched. I bought the set because I heard they would not be on DVD until after Episode III was released, and Episode II wasn't even out yet at the time.

When I bought them, I was annoyed there was not a VCD of the non-SE versions of the film. I didn't even know the half of it! Heh heh. I actually ripped the VCDs to my hard drive, and de-SEed them the best I could with TMPGEnc and reburnt them to CD-rs. They looked like crap, but they were only temporary, until the DVDs came out, surely those would contain the originals...

Heh, I remember those days when people were importing VCDs as a DVD surrogate. Since I knew they were the SEs, I just didn't bother, but I remember looking at screen caps and reading reviews. Ah, good nostalgia.

I just think it is funny that Lucasfilm's last release of the movies in '08 was a boxset of the PT and a boxset of the OT.

George Lucas Commentary on ROTS DVD, "It is one big movie, and it is suppose to be watched 1-6, and shouldn't be looked at as two trilogies."

I guess it is still two trilogies when it comes to marketing and making money on SW;)

If that's true, then I like the 2nd half the best! ;)

Back to the torrents for me, then. I have the 2004 DVDs, but joining this forum has really got me into obtaining the original original trilogy. Good thing my DVD player can play Xvid/DivX/AVI files burned right on a disc without converting of any kind. :)

Besides, I like spotting the differences. It can be fun. Not to ramble on here, but SPIKE aired Return of the Jedi last night and I tried to figure out which version they were airing. I figured out it was the 2004 version when I saw that Anakin had his eyebrows erased.

(And I almost never call it "A New Hope". It's usually just "Star Wars" for me. Was the "A New Hope" subtitle made up in '81?)

actually, on the bottom of the DVD box sets it still says "Star Wars: A New Hope"

Hmm.  I had just written a long post disproving what you just said, but now I see that you are in fact right.  Weird.  Not you being right but just that there's that one tiny instance where it's still used in 2004 but nowhere on the boxset.
