Seems abit strange that the rebels would design a starfighter that you cant actually get "in" without building an aid from the enviroment your on. Perhaps a force jump could be called for. There again, god NO!

this ladder business is crazy. how did R2 get back in?
in ANH you see all these technicians and engineers helping pilots and droids get in and it's like this whole big event on it's own. whereas in the prequels all the Jedi have ultra compact ships they can just hop into and not even have to warm it up.
but i think the A-wings were a little smaller than the Jedi fighters seen in ROTS

Its possible! The shots aren't moving so a clean matte with match moving keying can be done.

Nay I say on a handmade ladder! An escalator would be much better!
Seriously, though, I'd look more into a subtle folding ladder animation on takeoff, rather than a hand-built one. Something quick and in one of the close-ups so as not to draw attention to it.

If there was some way of reconstructing the lost tube cutting scenes the ladder could be made from the metal left over from his training.
