and aside from the disc reviews themselves their movie reviews are some of the most evenhanded, unpretentious intelligentlly written film reviews around.

Except for Radio. Man, I hated that movie!

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I wanted to see Radio when I first started seeing trailers for it. But the more I saw, the less I wanted to see it. Still have not seen it. From the sound of things, I should be glad.

They should have called it Retardo.

I could smell the badness of that movie a mile away. But then I have yet to like a movie where an actor who is not retarded played a retarded person.

I dug I Am Sam. That was good. But there are very few instances of Sean Penn being bad in a movie. I think I was willing to give Radio a chance because it had Ed Harris in it and he's a greatly underrated actor.

true.

But then Cuba Gooding JR is an overrated actor, so it all balances out.

A guy at the office decided he hated Radio before he ever saw it because it's:

1. A feel-good movie

about

2. Sports

and the main character is

3. A retard

I don't really have an issue with (2), but (1) and (3) clinch it for me.

What about What's Eating Gilbert Grape? All opinions about DiCaprio's other work aside, I thought he did an excellent job in this one.

I wonder what it's like to know that the best acting job you've ever done involved playing a mentally retarded person.

This was why we decided against it. Haven't seen a good Cuba flick since Jerry Maguire. The Oscar curse. Happened to Gwyneth, too.

I have yet to see Gilbert Grape. But I still have to say that I liked Gangs of NY with DiCaprio and he did a decent job with Catch Me If You Can despite how otherwise inferior the movie was.

As for other retarded star actors... while it wasn't a great movie, Juliette Lewis and Giovanni Ribisi did a good job in The Other Sister.

See Gilbert Grape. Johnny Depp is great, too, even though it's a bloody depressing film.

Good point. I forgot about WEGG (to be honest I have no beef with DiCaprio as an actor). I'm sure there a few others as well, its just that there's such a fine line between acting like you're mentally challenged, and just imitating it for laughs. Personally it doesn't seem to be all that tough an act to pull off, but maybe thats me.

Even some of the best performances of this kind like Sean Penn in I AM SAM don't really seem all that differnet then some kid at school saying "hey look at me I'm a retard". Does that make any sense?

The thing I loved about DiCaprio's performance in WEGG was that it wasn't the typical "noble individual with a disability" performance. My wife works in a group home with 2 autistic children and one with a brainstem disorder, and I can tell you from experience that DiCaprio's performance is unflinchingly honest. It also helps that the character is well written; there is such a concern about being politically correct when playing people with disabilities instead of being concerned about an accurate portrayal. DiCaprio's performance ranks up there with Charlize Theron's in Monster and Hillary Swank's in Boys Don't Cry, in that you FORGET that it's an actor playing a character.

Han Solo: I'm a nice man.
