The Special Edition wasn't needed. — Page 2

A world where the SE never happened kinda goes hand in hand with a world where the PT was done in a drastically different way, specifically much less reliance on effects. But even if the PT wasn't done any differently, I'd accept it as long as we never had an SE. At least in that scenario the PT is what it is and you can either take it or leave it.

I just became a Star Wars fan several months ago. I watched them in the numbered order, that's 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Besides that, the 2004 SE was the first vesions of the OT I saw, so I have different view on it. But I'm sure that I'd be pretty pissed if I grew up watching a perfect movie and then in the future they completely screw it up.

Even though I've only seen the SE of the OT, after reading about all of this I see what problems the changes I saw were.

Reaction to certain scenes:

A New Hope:

"Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough": Anakin didn't even know he had a son...

Jabba/Han scene: I imagined Han's boss to be a bit...different

Luke's falcon training: Isn't he supposed to have a blue lightsaber?

Obi-Wan vs Darth Vader: Wonder why Obi-Wan calls him, "Darth"...

Empire Strikes Back:

Luke & Leia kiss: Wait, didn't Padme name her babies Luke & Leia?

Yoda's appearance: Did...is Yoda on drugs or something? And his voice got...heavier

Cloud City entrance: I seriously doubt that this scene was in the original version...

Vader/Emperor scene: Palpatine looks exactly the same as he did in Episode III. Don't people age?

"I am your father": I already suspected this in either one of the movies since it's probably the most heard quote

Return Of The Jedi:

Jabba's appearance: *just realizes that Episode I had Jabba* Alright, Episode IV CG Jabba officially sucks. This is much better.

Leia says she remembers her mother: BULL. SHIT.

Palpatine's appearance: He looks like he lost weight compared to Episode III & V...

Unmasking scene: If Anakin was burned, why does he only have burn marks on the side of his cheek?

Anakin/Obi-Wan/Yoda final scene: Why is Anakin just looking around everywhere?

My dad's reaction to the final scene: Who's that guy on the left?

Now typing this out helps me see why the PT kinda ruined the OT.

This point of view is rarely heard in these forums.  We've known these movies our whole lives, and the PT and SE are some kind of outside force trying to change what we think about the OT.  It's nice to see that even people watching them straight through for the first time can see the complete lack of care for the OT in the PT and SE.

Thanks for sharing!

I'd like to say one more thing that I just remembered:

When I was watching Episode I & II, I hardly had any idea what was going on. Episode III was easier to understand, and I always knew what was happening in IV, V, and VI.

I remember my first reaction to the podrace scene, I thought, first of all, IS THIS SOME KIND OF RACE? FOR WHAT? WHY IS THIS SO DAMN LONG? After I watched it I thought it was a very boring movie and was too "political".

Also in the Han/Greedo scene from Episode IV, right after Han shot Greedo, I thought, "What just happened?" I can't explain what I exactly mean, all I know is that there was an explosion and the green alien is dead.

I re-watched Episode I last week, and I think it's a lot less boring if you actually know what's happening. But the only way in my view to make Star Wars truly perfect as a saga (not just IV, V, and VI) is to re-do I, II, and III. If I, II, and III was done with a different director, then the SE would have simply been better image quality (and other minor things that wouldn't have caused controversy)

There is a major difference in the 97 SE and the 04 DVD SE. While I may not agree with all of the 97 changes-they are at least palatable and more importantly: understandable. (Save for Han and Greedo in the Cantina)

The 97 SE are still my preferred versions of ESB and ROTJ. (I like to watch the original version of ANH.)The 2004 SE is an abomination.

George. Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me you had gone back and redone the OT again? I bought your 2004 boxset and then felt like the biggest chump in the world. My VCR thanks you for keeping it alive ever since.

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:... That GL deleted them is testament to what a good director he was then. Putting them back in weakens the film and is proof that he has lost his eye for what's good and bad in a film.

I fear that Luca$h cannot take credit... I would give that to his editing team... as has been said on these boards before, Luca$h's choice of collaborator is the real difference between SW77 and all he's done since as a director... in fact, I would go further... his work on the PT indicates that he was never a great director, in the sense of an auteur... he was just one part of the great team that made SW77... in my opinion, ESB is noticeably much better directed...

The raw material that the SW movies were based on may have come from Luca$h... but he has never been able to shape it... others have always done that for him... problem is, he always took the credit... and now he can't remember the truth... the result of this is his appalling attitude to the OOT... dismissing those wonderful films as rough drafts of his "vision"... the real artists of the OOT having to suffer the indignity of having gaudy, artless, computer-generated images smeared across their pioneering contributions to popular cinema in an act of outright vandalism...

It's not just that the SEs weren't needed... you understate the case, my friend...

Don't you call me a mindless philosopher...!

Why? Wouldn't the silver widescreen edition (the one I have) be better? (More picture?) I used to think that fullscreen was better but I've since learned otherwise...

Lucas also continues to lead the fight for film preservation. "It's amazing," he says, "that you have to fight the studios to get them to preserve their films. . . . Parts of 'Dr. Strangelove' are gone; some of the music is lost. Kubrick is having to photograph individual frames to create a new fine-grain negative. That's madness, tragic madness."

I have the Fullscreen Version in the Gold/Copper Box, which I got right after Christmas of 2004.  I remember watching and thinking to myself "I don't recall many of those scenes, celebrations, or songs" in that part of the movie.  But I figured it had been so long since I seen the movies I just forgot or something.

Yeah, you should be able to find the slim 2008 box for $30 on Amazon. Or buy the individual movies for $13 at Wal-Mart. I suppose you'll have more of a reasons to rebuy the movies since you can get both versions in widescreen.

Keep the bonus disc from the 2004 set.

This may be late a little late and I mean no disrespect but to the phrase "The SE wasn't needed" I say: No kidding. There are plenty of films that are still loved without having any more than a good restoration. Bert Lahr is not replaced by some CG lion in Wizard of Oz, you can see strings in the original Day the Earth Stood Still, and the 33 King Kong never lost its stop motion star. All three don't have as much as a frame of CGI, either at the time of their releases or in the future and they are still beloved films. And they're not the only old films that have never gotten a George Lucas like redo and are still considered classics. They were just the three that came to mind. If a guy in a less than stellar lion costume, obvious behind the scenes objects like wires holding actors, and a jittery gorilla don't ruin the films they are featured in, then nothing in Star Wars needed to be touched up. Seriously, the old effects are still cool today and kick the asses of a lot effects done today. So yeah, the SE wasn't needed. Mr. Lucas, I understand that you may not be entirely satisfied with your work and I appalud you wanting to fix them, but some of us like your rough drafts. At least include restored versions of your "rough" drafts with your finished drafts and we'll be happy. (And I didn't mean to insult Wizard of Oz, Day the Earth Stood Still, and King Kong; the problems I mentioned are extremely minor and they are wonderful films that should be experienced in their theatrical glory...like a certain sci-fi trilogy that I'm sure we all know).

the SE...o boy. It definatly wasnt needed, but I gotta say i did like the replacement CGI, i just wish they wouldve replaced it all and not just a couple of shots in ANH. and good replacements, not all the ships having a blue R2D2 and stuff like that. The things like where they add on to the movie, like adding new shots of Luke and Ben going into the spaceport and making it a huge city like place is definatly not needed, or wanted. Originally it looked like a barren rock, adding onto why Luke wanted "to teleport off that rock" but the SE made it seem like, o look! Giant dinosaurs with lil dudes riding them almost stepping on ppl who don't seem to notice them (seriously look at those shots, NO1 notices them, and some almost get crushed by the CGI dinos) and getting hit by bikes, why would Luke ever wanna leave!? If he just fixed up the space battles, quality, and SOME minor changes to things like stormtroopers with missing shoulder pads or a soldier looking like hes firing a gun in the bakcground but no lasers coming out of the gun (ROTJ's full of these) and put them in a DVD with good quality and CORRECT colors and fixed sabers, in a box set with the original unaltered versions also with good quality made for HDTV's, then alot of ppl would be happy.

I just went back and watched a 97 Widescreen VHS set. I forgot how much I liked the 97 SE. My qualms are only in Greedo shooting and a little too much activity in Mos Eisley (squabbling droids for example). The battle of Yavin leaps off the screen in the 97 ANH where in the original some things are only implied. Most of this probably stems from the fact that my first SW experience was the 97 SE. Most complain about the Jabba scene-while I agree with it being cut out-its not that bad of a scene. I like this Jabba because he actually seems like Jabba (albeit way off from ROTJ) and not the abomination on the 04 DVD. ESB and ROTJ are perfect to me.  If the originals had not been locked away in the "Lucas Vault" the SE negative backlash wouldn't be so intense. I wish that the 97's would be more commonly acknowledged instead of brushed off as just the the pre-DVD version. They are not perfect, but they are worthwhile additions to the trilogy.

I agree, I was never really sure why everyone hated the 97s so much. Obviously, they weren't quite as good as the O-OT, because a lot of stuff just felt tossed in ("Look! Remember Shadows of the Empire? Well, here's a swoop and the Outrider! Also, a big dinosaur! And falling Jawas! And an angry droid! And a shot of Vader getting off his shuttle at Cloud City! And more Dewbacks, and a Sentinel-class shuttle, and so many awesome things that we just HAD TO SHOW YOU!) But they didn't screw with too much, other than Greedo shooting first. And it was nice to see the cleaner picture than the old Faces VHS box.

Currently looking for the following preservations: V8 A Final Attempt by Arnie.D, Pre-ANH Bootleg Telecine, Starkiller '77 bootleg, LD OT by Cowclops, LD OT by Dr. Gonzo, LD OT by Farsight, LD OT by ISOMIX, LD OT by Dark/Sega Take 1, TPM Theatrical by Adywan, OT - Deliberate Creative, OCPMovie's Classic Editions, Pan & Scan O-OT Project, LD OT by EditDroid, Lucasfilm Pwnage Editions, Negative1 CED Preservations, Starkiller CED Preservation, Rowman bonus discs, BLAK0004, BLAK0009, BLAK0010, BLAK0016, BLAK0017, BLAK0029, BLAK0040, BLAK0046, BLAK0047-0050. I loved the SE. Aside from the horribly flamboyant jabbas palace dance number they showed real charm. I grew up with the originals and I am proud to say I still have the originals. Most of my frustration I take out on the DVDs are the fact that I can't see the Star Wars I grew up with in higher quality than laserdisc. I want to show my children these movies. I want them to say oh the originals were soo much better. I like what adywan is doing. I think it is this site that makes me proud to be a star wars nerd again. Before I came here I was just an old fan who thought I would never see the original star wars in high quality. Now I am still the same person I just have friends to cry with LOL

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Add the 97s to that. I became disenchanted with everything SW after the prequels and lack of OOT restored. This site and a 97 letterboxed VHS set have gotten me out of carbon freeze. BTW, don't chilled monkey brains taste like jello? May be just my crazy taste buds after the peanut butter filled beetles.

Let me state some of the problems with the 97 SE.

Everybody knows about Han shooting first being shite. Castrate Han, why not? Such bullshit. And it fucks with Han's character and Han is one of the best things in the trilogy, so it's pretty serious. Not to mention it fucks up one of the coolest scenes in the trilogy to fit in with bogus goody-goody morality. But what about Jabba? That Jabba was HORRIFIC. Total comical cartoon. The ROTJ Jabba had power and presence and intelligence and menace. The 97 Jabba cgi looks like it's designed purely for comical effect. Furthermore, there even seems to be some attempt to make it cutesey. That is NOT Jabba. It doesn't look or feel like the same character at all. CGIing Jabba to look like that shows a major lack of respect for the OT and what was established in ROTJ and a total lack of interest in consistency. And then there's Han stepping on Jabba's tail. Can you seriously imagine the Jabba from ROTJ letting Han live if he stepped on Jabba's tail? ROTJ Jabba was a great character, which makes the 97 ruining of him all the more tragic and awful. Mos Eisley: Lucas said he originally wanted to make it busier and bigger than he did in 77, or something like that. Well, he should have been able to see from the finished 77 film that what he ended up with in 77 was better than what he originally wanted. It had more atmosphere and flavor, that little town that he showed us. And it was more of its time. The 97 Mos Eisley is overdone and furthermore has TPM-style "comedy" and Bash Fender's ship from Shadows of the Empire stuffed in. The EU doesn't belong in the OT. Like I said, the 77 Mos Eisley was of its time. The 97 version was also flavored by its era and jars with the 1977 movie. There are multiple other very 90s-taste things in the 97 SE films that jar with the original 70s/80s films they're forced into, such the cgi Jabba and Jedi Rocks and its cartoon characters and the style of the ROTJ other-planet celebration scenes and the morality of Han shooting second.

ESB didn't have terrible problems in the SE, but scenes from ROTJ shouldn't be shoved in to ESB. Like what's Jerjerrod doing in ESB?

ROTJ has the Jedi Rocks Jabba's palace musical bit. Horrible overdone bullshit with cartoon characters who don't look real. When a cgi character comes off looking unreal it compromises the whole feel of the scene (and film) and compromises it feeling real and believable. This was a big problem with the Jabba in ANH too. And it's not the limits of CGI tech at the time or anything like that. The Jedi Rocks creatures and the ANH Jabba are done cartoon-style, so there's clearly zero real attempt to make them look real and they're clearly designed to be comical. They totally ruined Sy Snootles and that singing Yuzzum guy was horrendous. This scene craps on the whole movie. Then there's the celebrations on other planets at the end. The original end of ROTJ was very carefully designed so that the emotional mood gracefully and gradually moves from the mood of the Vader funeral pyre scene into the celebration mood, all crucially kept in the atmospheric setting of Endor at night. It works perfectly and as the closing section of the trilogy it is crucial that it work perfectly. The crass other-planet celebration scenes are shoved right in the middle of this, breaking up the flow and the atmosphere and scarring the beauty of ROTJ's ending. And then there's the change in celebration music. ROTJ's ending was the end of the trilogy and all the main characters were alive and well. It was a happy ending, despite the bittersweet element of Vader's death. But when you look at Star Wars as The Tragedy of Darth Vader it suddenly becomes sadder because Vader is the hero and he's dead. This is I think the reason for replacing the happy Yub Nub with the sadder tune the SE brought in. It's betrayal of the nature of the story and what the ending was supposed to be.

Finally, it is not valid to go back and fuck with a beloved classic like that and stuff in things from a different era that has different tastes and a different mentality. It's fucking desecration. A film is a thing of its time and it should be left that way, an expression of the cultural/social milieu of its time. When you fuck with that by putting in conspicuously later-era stuff you make something that is not genuine. A lie. Similarly, it is bullshit to make revisionist changes to the story of a classic. Nor is it valid to stick into a classic things that just don't work by the rules of the classic, such as cartoon characters into a trilogy that such characters do not not fit. Like splicing Mickey Mouse into Schindler's List. And it's not valid to put things into a classic that fuck up how it functions or ruin great characters. And this SE wasn't just meant to be a harmless alternative cut. Already in 1994 it was stated in Star Wars Insider 23 that the SE was meant to be the "definitive" version of the films. That means it supersedes the original. Think about that. A bastardized version that involves stuffing stuff from a different era into a classic being taken as the definitive version of the classic. That's total bullshite and an insult to the people who loved the classic. And in 1995 we got the "One Last Time" video/laserdisc campaign that told us that we were getting one last chance to buy the original versions of Star Wars on video/laserdisc (there was no dvd back then) because it would no longer be available after that. Think about that. The SE was being brought in and because of that the OOT would be no longer made available. In other words, the OOT was to be totally replaced and made gone. And remember this superseded replaced thing was the original form of a classic, the version beloved of millions. So this SE was a totally invalid endeavour and an insult.

Author
Time

You're right. I can understand going back and making a different version, but calling the SE "definitive" is an insult. I grew up with the SE (I acknowledge it's faults/problems/evils), and would simply like the option of watching it or the OOT fully restored. I agree that Han should always shoot-Greedo was a overconfident buffoon. The OOT should never have been locked away-it should be a matter of choice: which do I feel like watching right now? (like Ridley Scott's DVD sets!)

The 2004 Trilogy should be obliterated by the Death Star for its severe ineptitude.

I hate the whole "one last time" campaign too. (Still have the VHS set though!)

I'm in favor of he 97 SE being made available on dvd and blu-ray. It's part of Star Wars history and it's important to the study of how Lucas's Star Wars mindset developed. I have it on vhs. At least it doesn't have Hayden leering at the end.

He takes an outtake of hayden from episode III, and digitally cuts him into the scene, cause we all know Hayden was such a better actor than Shaw, lol.

If Anakin really died when he turned sith then just who the hell did Luke save/redeem on the Death Star II?

It is like becoming a sith so you can stop people from dying but killing your wife, when your whole reason for turning was to save her.  Boy did Lucas drop the ball on that one.  Also remember he totally forget to film the lightsaber being picked up from the ground to later give to luke, they had to do pickups to get the footage.

He is not that familiar with the oot as evidenced from interviews, and probably did not even bother watching them before writing and shooting the prequels to keep things consistent.  Even if he was too lazy he could have had one or more of his employees do this and put together notes from the scripts and films, a continuity journal  as the series existed after return of the jedi in 1983.

He got a master database set up to keep things consistent in the EU, but for the canon film series no such attention to detail matters?  Must have slipped his mind.

In my opinion star wars deserved better, if he was going to half ass it he may as well have hired other writers and directors who respected the material to make the new films.

And Look at some of the actors the prequels had, and their talents were completely wasted.  Ewan Mcgregor, Liam Neeson, Natalie Portman, Christopher Lee etc.

They wanted a james dean type for Anakin, a reason we got Hayden.  Though look at his screen test he has almost no presence or charisma which are things dean had in spades.  But his screen test was better than his performance in the films so Lucas must be the problem since Lucas did not direct the test but Robin gurland did, but she definitely is no fred roos.  You see Sophia Coppola went to bat for Hayden and pretty much got him the job, George Lucas being her godfather and all.  He had a bit part in the Virgin Suicides ?

That dude from Dawson's creek almost got the job, not van der beek the other guy, Josh Jackson.

Star Wars can be a blessing and a curse for actors it probably cost Mcgregor his chance to be james bond, because the producers did not want obi wan as bond. Not that he was ever really  in the running but he was not even considered because of being typecast. But the same thing happened to Hugh Jackman being typecast as Wolverine, and also to Christian Bale being typecast as Batman.

I'm sorry, but anyone who says the SE and 2004 DVDs are the "prefered way" to watch these movies are not a true 70s 80s Star Wars fan.  They came along with the SE Hype.  Let me go through the nonsense of the SEs, or what irks me the most.

1.  Greedo Shooting First  NUFF SAID

2. CGI Entrance to Mos Eisley  NOT NEEDED

3. Jabba the Hutt   NUFF SAID

I think that might actually be all.  The Death Star attack was handled well.  The added CGI shots were good.

The Empire Strikes Back

1. Less Wampa, the better I say

2. Blue, blue everywhere

3. LUKE DOES NOT SCREAM!!!

4. Darth Vader says "Bring My Shuttle" pissed off like because HE IS PISSED OFF  NOT "Alert my Star Destroyer to Prepare for My Arrival" all calmly

5.  Okay George, I see a different angle of the Death Star II from RotJ when I see one.

Return of the Jedi

1. Don't need a music number in Jabb's Palace George

2. Sarlacc did not need a beak

3. Ending Sucked  NUFF SAID

Don't even get me started on the retarded Prequels or those 2004 DVDs with Hayden!  Damn you Lucas.  DAMN YOU!!!

It’s Not the Years, It’s the Mileage.

1Shouta's story should teach us something. If you introduce someone to Star Wars, TELL THEM TO WATCH THE OT FIRST! Luckily, my brother was big into SW back in the 90s so we had both the 1995 'Faces' and 1997 SE VHS sets. That and bits of Episode 1 (not too much, it was laying in a pile of tapes one day, my brother shoved me, I fell on it), so I got to see the OT before the prequels.

That was crazy. The whole POINT of that stuff in ROTJ was that Luke redeemed that old guy who had been Darth Vader. Jeez, it's like we need to explain Star wars to Lucas.

I'm new here, so here's my take on both SEs with bits I approve of and ones I don't.

Approved:

- Enhanced spaceship effects

- Film restoration

- Improved wide shots (Tatooine (not Mos Eisley), Cloud City)

- Temuera Morrison's voice added (it's more badass and threatening, it's like Morrison is Keaton and Wingreen is Bale, Wingreen's was too over the top, but Morrison's was perfect)

- New Cantina creatures

- Fett flurting

- Ewok celebration

Uneven:

- Dewbacks

- Sarlacc Pit

- Mos Eisley (adds scope, but the creatures were too show-off-ish)

- explosion rings

- Emperor in Empire

- Jedi Rocks

- Extended Vader shuttle scene

Disapproved:

- Greedo shooting first

- Luke scream in Empire

- Hayden in Jedi

- Wampa

- Jabba in SW

I'm new here, so here's my take on both SEs with bits I approve of and ones I don't.

Morrison's performance was not badass and threatening at all. The original Boba Fett voice was badass and threatening. Temuera's version was bland and noncommital -a horrible performance. It was obscene to take an actor out of a recognized classic like they did with Wingreen's original Boba Fett voice. It's one of the worst things about the SE.
